Robert A. “Bobo” Arnold, 44, Richmond, Mo., died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2009. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond; burial in South Point Cemetery, Orrick. Visitation will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, at the funeral home.
Peggy Barnett
Peggy B. Barnett, 76, Westerville, Ohio, died Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009, at Mount Carmel St Ann’s Hospital in Westerville, Ohio. Mrs. Barnett was born April 4, 1933, in Tarrant City , Ala., the daughter of Frank and Lanelle (Lehman) Bryant. She was married to Dr. Rev. Charles L. Barnett Sr. on June 4, 1954. She was a retired teacher, having taught at Westview Elementary School in Excelsior Springs, Mo., from 1969 to 1973 and as a special education teacher at Highland North Elementary School in Chesterville, Ohio, from 1975 to 1998. She lived in Greenville, S.C., from 1955 to 1957, Barboursville, W.V., from 1957 to 1961, Excelsior Springs, Mo., from 1961 to 1973 (during which time her husband was minister at Barbee Memorial Presbyterian Church), Galion, Ohio, from 1973 to 1987, and Westerville, Ohio, since 1987. She was a member of Central College Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Rev. Charles L. Barnett Sr., on Sept. 25, 1985. Survivors include one son, Charles L. Barnett Jr., Westerville, Ohio; stepdaughter, Leslie E. Gruzs, Lewis Center, Ohio; daughter, Virginia B. Smith, Blacklick, Ohio; sisters, Barbara B. Cushman, Tarrant, Ala., and Gay B. Trice, Calera, Ala.; and two grandsons. A viewing will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2, at Hill Funeral Home in Westerville , Ohio. The service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3, in the chapel at Central College Presbyterian Church in Westerville , Ohio. A graveside service will be held at Jefferson Memorial Cemetery in Birmingham, Ala.
Emily Barr
Emily A. Barr, 95, Kearney, Mo., died Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009. Ms. Barr was born Dec. 6, 1913, in Kearney, the daughter of Isaac and Cora Christensen Turnage. She was married to Sam Barr for 73 years. She was a member of the Kearney Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband and her daughter, Beverly Barr. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Jack and Charlotte Barr, Kearney. Visitation will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 19, at the First Christian Church in Kearney, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20. Burial in Fairview Cemetery in Kearney. Arrangements are through Fry-Bross & Spidle Funeral Home in Kearney. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church Memorial Fund.
Opal Blyth
Opal Blyth, 90, Orrick, Mo., died Monday, Oct. 26, 2009, at her home. Ms. Blyth was born Oct. 1, 1919, in Ray County, the daughter of Daniel T. and Fleta Mae (Mills) Sharp. She was a lifelong resident of the Orrick area. She was married to Donald Kent Blyth on Nov. 30, 1940. She was a self-employed custodian in the community, cleaning various homes and businesses. She was a member of Fleming Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Kent Blyth, on May 20, 2007; two sons, Dannie Kent Blyth on Jan. 25, 1967, and Donald Keith Blyth on Sept. 15, 2009; and a daughter, Alicia Mae O’Dell, on Oct. 12, 2009. Survivors include two sons, Jackie D. Blyth and Ulvin “Bub” Blyth, both of Orrick; a daughter, Martha Barnes-Martin, Independence; sisters, Ruby Broadhurst, Reba Clevenger and Margaret Reynolds Williams, all of Excelsior Springs, Freda Skinner, Lawson, and Martha Dorton Jenkins, Richmond; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. The family will greet friends from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, at Gowing Funeral Home in Orrick. Funeral services will follow at 2:30 p.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Donna Murphy-Ceradsky officiating. The family will gather at the home of Jack and Mary Blyth in Orrick on Thursday, Friday and Saturday; friends are welcome to stop by. Iona Lucille Cade, 92, Liberty, Mo., died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2009. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27, at Holmeswood Baptist Church in Kansas City. Deanna Sue (Bigelow) Carlson, 61, Overland Park, Kan., died Monday, Oct. 12, 2009, at her home. Mrs. Carlson was born Nov. 6, 1947, in Kansas City, the daughter of Wallis Howard and Joyce (Lewis) Bigelow. Survivors include her husband, Cameron D. Carlson; daughter, Shanna L. Kinnison, Richmond, Mo.; son, Jeffrey Carlson, Prairie Village, Kan.; sister, Gloria J. Triplett, Prairie Village; and two grandchildren. *Earl Coates
Earl Eugene Coates, 89, Excelsior Springs, Mo., passed away Friday, Oct. 2, 2009, at Liberty Hospital in Liberty, Mo. Earl was born Feb. 14, 1920, in Richmond, Mo., the son of Frank and Clara Golden (Jordan) Coates. He had worked in coal mining and spent 14 months in hardware building oil reserves in Red Hill. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was an armed guard on the Liberty Merchant Ship. He has owned Two Restaurants named the Missouri Cafe and Coates Feed Lots. in 1956 he started building houses and started Coates Construction. In 1964 he started pouring basements and then got into excavating in 1969. He had also been involved with farming during most of his life. He was a member of Woods Memorial Christian Church in Excelsior Springs, Mo., the Elks Lodge, the American Legion for more than 50 years, and the Disabled American Veterans. He had served as Director for Platte Clay Electric for more than 20 years. Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Helen Coates, of the home; one son, L.E. "Butch" Coates and wife, "Spanky," Excelsior Springs, Mo.; one daughter, Evelyn Morgan and husband, Ed, Climax Springs, Mo.; grandchildren, Kim Wetzel and husband, Keith, Travis Coates and wife, Jen, Gabe Coates and wife, Kim, and Jon LaPee'; and great-grandchildren, Chris Wetzel, Naomi Coates, Blake Wetzel, Michael Coates, Alex Thornton, Shane LaPee' and Emily Wetzel. Besides his parents, Earl was preceded in death by one sister, Irene Anderson; and one granddaughter, Heather Kay. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 5, at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. Burial with military honors will be in the Crown Hill Cemetery, Excelsior Springs, Mo. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services (1-2 p.m.) Monday at the funeral home. *Tom Coleman
Tommy Dale Coleman, 56, Lawson, Mo,. passed away Friday, Oct. 23, 2009, in Excelsior Springs, Mo. Tom was born on Nov. 18, 1952, in Kansas City, Mo., the son of Clarence W. and Bessie F. (Dale) Coleman. On May 3, 1974, he married Janell (Sharp) Coleman, who survives of the home. He worked as a foreman for Belger-Cartage of Kansas City, Mo. He enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson and tinkering around with his son Tim. He could fix nearly anything. He was a member of Teamsters Union Local #541. Besides his wife, Janell, Tom is survived by daughter, Catherine Johnson; son, Tim Coleman (Jenny Boehm); daughter, Jessica Coleman; three sisters, Jean Renfro, Diana Mings, and Glenda Gragg; and two grandchildren, Melanie and Bailey Johnson. Tom was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Kelley; and a brother, Donald Coleman. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 26, at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. Cremation.
Sarah Fields
Sarah Winifred Fields, 84, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2009. Services were held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, at First Baptist Church in Kearney. Visitation was held from 9 a.m. until the time of the service Thursday at the church. Graveside services were held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Monroe Cemetery in Ludlow. Arrangements are through Lindley Funeral Home.
Wanda Gilbert
Wanda Gilbert, 84, died Friday, Oct. 30, 2009. Ms. Gilbert attended Gracemor Christian Church. She sang in an intergenerational choir called “Heartbeats.” Survivors include her children, Robert Coil, Lawson, Mo., Patricia Mallory, Greeley, Colo., Barbara Byrd, Excelsior Springs, Mo., and Cathy Perkins, Pleasant Hill, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren. Visitation was held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2, at White Chapel Funeral Home in Gladstone. Funeral services were set for 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3, at the chapel.
James Graef
James Graef, 90, Orrick, Mo., died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, at Dickey Funeral Home in Garden City; interment in Mullin Cemetery near Urich. Visitation will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the Missouri Veterans Home in Warrensburg.
Michael Grass
Michael Ray Grass, 61, Rayville, Mo., died Friday, Oct. 16, 2009, at the Excelsior Springs Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Mr. Grass was born Aug. 23, 1948, in Excelsior Springs, the son of Raymond Grass and Marjorie (O'Dell) Grass. He worked as a brick layer. Survivors include his father, Raymond Grass; his mother and stepfather, Marjorie and John Saville; two sons, Gary Grass and Sean Grass; two daughters, Jamie Clock and Brandy Grass; one stepdaughter, Colleen; two sisters, Linda Woodring and Deby Eaves; one brother, Randy Grass; four grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. Burial will be in the Hillcrest Cemetery, Excelsior Springs. Dolores Gryder
Dolores Jean Gryder, 79, Orrick, Mo., died Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009, at her home. Ms. Gryder was born May 23, 1930, in the Floyd community of rural Orrick, the daughter of Golden and Mildred (Norris) Sisk. She had lived most of her life in Orrick. Dolores was married to Benny Gryder on June 2, 1951. In her earlier years, Dolores had been a secretary for the Ray County Agriculture Extension Office and the Columbia, S.C., Chamber of Commerce. She also was a homemaker. She was a member of the Orrick Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her father, Golden Sisk; her stepfather, Sidney Brazeal; and a sister, Beverly Ann Johnson. Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Benny Gryder, of the home; her 102-year-old mother, Mildred Sisk Brazeal, Richmond; a son, Ron Gryder, Richmond; a daughter, Nancy Masciovecchio, Liberty; and four grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4, at the Orrick Christian Church. Burial in South Point Cemetery near Orrick. Barbara Jean (Derstler) Halterman, 48, Richmond, Mo., died Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, at First Baptist Church in Richmond. Cremation. Visitation is from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the church.
Betty Hill
Betty Ann Hill, 79, Kansas City, Mo. (formerly of Lawson, Mo.), died Friday, Oct. 23, 2009, at St. Luke’s North Hospital in Kansas City, Mo. Ms. Hill was born Nov. 6, 1929, the daughter of Bob and Helen (Cunningham) Glenn. She was married to Keith Hill on Dec. 11, 1948; he preceded her in death on Nov. 14, 2003. She was a resident of Garden Village Retirement in Kansas City for the past three years but lived most of her life in Lawson. She retired from WMPC after 25 years of service, where she was secretary for the Missouri State Division of Youth Services. She was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church. In addition to her husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Robert E. Glenn III; and one grandson, Carl David Hill. Survivors include four children, Helen Ann Kelly, Smithville, Joe Hill, Kansas City, George Hill, Excelsior Springs, and Mark Hill, Kansas City; stepmother, Juanita Hatfield, Excelsior Springs; two brothers, Michael Glenn, Tennessee, and David Glenn, Georgia; one sister, Patty Van Pelt, Grandview; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 26, at St. Ann Catholic Church in Excelsior Springs. Burial will be in Old Union Cemetery near Lawson. Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 25, at the church, with a Rosary at 7 p.m. Arrangements are through Polley Funeral Home in Lawson.
*Erma Hutson
Erma Faye Hutson (Wright), 77, passed away Monday, Sept. 28, 2009. Erma Faye was born June 6, 1932, in Elmira, Mo., the daughter of Morris and Erma Hutson. She was married to Roy Melvin Wright on Oct. 1, 1951. They enjoyed a long and happy marriage and had seven children. She was a member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses. She was preceded in death by her parents, Morris and Erma Hutson; her sister, Rosanna Hutson Cole; her husband, Roy Wright; a son, John Wright; and a granddaughter, Skylar Wright. Survivors include her children, Roy Milton Wright and his wife, Betty, Oklahoma, Benny Lee Wright, Missouri, Lyncoya Ann O’Connell and her husband, Danny, Florida, Linda Sue McNeiland and her husband, Jeff, Oklahoma, Michael Wright and his wife, Tracey, Nevada, and David Daniel Wright and his wife, Tammy, Oklahoma; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Chandler, Okla.
*Keith Kampman
Keith Kampman, 65, of Excelsior Springs, Mo., passed away Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009, at North Kansas City Hospital in North Kansas City, Mo. Born Feb. 25, 1944, Mr. Kampman was the son of Vern and Nova Pearl (Beason) Kampman. On Dec. 9, 1978, in Kansas City, Mo., he was married to Terrie Markham, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Kimberly McCroskie and husband, Derrick, of Rayville, Mo., and Jennifer Kampman and Kyle Kilgore of Excelsior Springs, Mo.; one brother, Charles Kampman and wife, Kathleen, of Bethany, Mo.; and one grandson, Harley. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Jack Kampman; and one sister in infancy. Keith had worked for the Daily Standard and Excelsior Springs Standard for over 12 years. He enjoyed being outside and doing yard work, and also enjoyed cooking and attending all of the kids’ sporting events. He attended Pleasant Valley Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs, Mo. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society.
“Pete” Jones
Connor “Pete” Jones, 94, Hamilton, Mo., died Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2009. Mr. Jones was born May 9, 1915, in rural Caldwell County, the son of Ora F. and Emma M. Connor Jones. He was married to Norma Merrell on Oct. 12, 1940. They owned and operated the Hamilton Locker Plant, and he also farmed. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, two sisters and two brothers. Survivors include daughters, Sharon Thomson, Excelsior springs, Donna Combs, Newton, Iowa, and Connie Lasher, King City; sister, Jean Hines, Hamilton; brother, Elmore Jones, Independence; seven grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and five stepgreat-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, at Hamilton United Methodist Church, with visitation one hour prior. Interment in Highland Cemetery in Hamilton. Michael Lamley
Michael Lamley, 52, Pleasant Valley, Mo., died Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2009. Mr. Lamley was born March 2, 1957, in Excelsior Springs, the son of Oscar and Betty Williams Lamley. He was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church and Labor Union 264 sine 1975. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother, Gordon Keith Lamley. Survivors include his wife, Ruth, of the home; brother, Gary Lamley, Excelsior Springs; and sister, Diane Reyes, Kansas City. Funeral services wil be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, at Bross & Spidle Chapel in Excelsior Springs. Burial in Crown Hill Cemetery in Excelsior Springs. Virginia Lewis
Virginia Clair Lewis, 84, Lawson, Mo., died Sunday, Oct. 18, 2009, at Valley Manor and Rehabilitation Center in Excelsior Springs, Mo. Ms. Lewis was born March 11, 1925, in Norfork, Ark., the daughter of John and Ethel (Whorley) Shelor. She was a member of the Vibbard Christian Union Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Carol Lewis Sullivan; two brothers, Gene and Jimmy Shelor; one sister, Corinne Hurst; and one grandson. Survivors include one daughter, Sharon Elaine Oliver, of the home; one sister, Dorris Hurst, Independence; four brothers, Karl Shelor, Excelsior Springs, Bill Shelor, Indianapolis, Ind., Larry Shelor, Kansas City, and Steven Shelor, Lawson; and one great-granddaughter. Robert McCreery
Robert L. McCreery, 74, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Friday, Oct. 9, 2009, in Omaha, Neb. Mr. McCreery was born Nov. 12, 1934. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce McCreery. Survivors include his daughter, Rhonda Silvey; sister, Merline Sharp; and two grandchildren. Funeral services are private. Inurnment at Glenridge Cemetery in Liberty. *Donald McDermott
Donald E. McDermott, 86, of Winfield, Kan., passed away into the arms of our Saviour Thursday evening, Oct. 22, 2009, at the Kansas Veterans Home in Winfield. Born on March 12, 1923, in Excelsior Springs, Mo., he was the son of John and Mary (Spruce) McDermott. He was raised and received his education in Excelsior Springs, where he graduated from high school in 1940. A veteran of World War II, Mr. McDermott proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. In the 1980s Don was the state leader in Cadillac sales. He had served a term as president of the Board of Education and two terms as president of the Quarterback Club in Excelsior Springs. He was united in marriage on Sept. 12, 1987, to Florence Walter in Wichita, Kan. Don loved watching football and collecting Kansas City Chiefs memorabilia. His family includes: his wife, Florence of Arkansas City, Kan.; his granddaughter, Andrea Tietjen Kramer and husband, Eric, of Missouri; his stepson: Jay N. Walter and family, of Arkansas City, Kan.; his stepdaughter, Cathy Hieght and family, of Taos, N.M.; his six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Jana Limpic; a brother; and three sisters. Military graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28, at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery in Winfield. Miles Funeral Service in Winfield is in charge of the arrangements. Rosemary McDowell
Rosemary Cecilia Theno McDowell, 82, Liberty, Mo., died Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009. Ms. McDowell was born Sept. 1, 1927, the daughter of Clarence Theno and Josephine Highberger. She was married to Edgar William McDowell for 46 years before he preceded her in death in 1993. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church. Survivors include four sons, three daughters, seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. A funeral mass was held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 2, at St. James Catholic Church in Liberty. Entombment at the Resurrection Cemetery Mausoleum, Kansas City, MO. Visitation was from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, at Church- Archer-Pasley Funeral Home in Liberty. Scott McKinley
Scott Allen McKinley, 43, Lathrop, Mo., died Monday, Oct. 5, 2009. Mr. McKinley was born Aug. 12, 1966, in Kansas City. He graduated from Liberty High School in 1985. He worked for the family company, Al McKinley Incorporated, as a bridge builder for more than 20 years. Since 2005, he and his sister co-owned McKinley’s LLC, a structural concrete/box culvert company. He was preceded in death by his mother, Delores McKinley, in 1982. Survivors include his wife, Deborah K. McKinley; children, Chrissy, Ana and Robert; father and stepmother, Al and Patsy McKinley; brothers, Bill McKinley, Steve McKinley and Todd Logan; sister, Jill Logan Havenhill; and a grandson expected in January 2010. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 9, at Chandler Baptist Church in Liberty, where Mr. McKinley often helped clear snow from the parking lot and maintain the cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, at Fry-Bross & Spidle Funeral Home in Kearney, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church. A memorial fund for the maintenance and education of his children will be set up at Clay County Savings Bank, P.O. Box 228, Kearney, MO 64060. Gale Miller
Gale Ferris Miller, 82, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Sunday, Oct. 4, 2009, at the Northland TLAC Hospital in Gladstone, Mo. Mr. Miller was born Sept. 28, 1927, near Auburn, Neb., the son of Don and Madge (Peery) Miller. He was married to RoseAnn Caroline Truhe on Aug. 4, 1980; she survives. After serving in the U.S. Army, he had a mail route in Auburn for three years and then went to work as a delivery driver in Goldsboro, N.C., and later in Ames and Des Moines, Iowa, for 10 years with Borden’s Dairy. He operated a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant in Des Moines and also in Manhattan, Kan., from 1969 to 1980. In 1980 he was employed as a tractor operator at Fort Riley, Kan.; he retired in 1997 and then moved to Excelsior Springs. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Donna Mae Perry. In addition to his wife, survivors include one daughter, Darla Ebenroth, Kearney; two sons, Steve Miller and Donald Miller, both of Excelsior Springs; one brother, James Miller, Mesa, Ariz.; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service, from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday. Wanda Moberly
Wanda Faye Moberly, 89, Kearney, Mo., died Thursday, Oct. 8, 2009, at Liberty Hospital in Liberty, Mo. Ms. Moberly was born Sept. 19, 1920, northeast of Kearney, the only child of Newton J. and Sarah Alice (Holt) Duncan. She was employed as an inspector at the Linda Lane Garment Company in Excelsior Springs. She then served for 24 years at the Clay County Sheriff’s Department and Circuit Court Division 6, retiring in 1981. She was married to Kenneth Franklin Moberly on Aug. 31, 1940. She was a member of Kearney First Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Moberly; a son, Jerry Moberly; and a great-grandson, Max Stegall. Survivors include two daughters, June Manar, Liberty, and Joyce Ervin, Kearney; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-granddaughters. Geraldine M. “Gerry” Nelson, 91, Cedar Falls, Iowa, died Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009, at the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home. Ms. Nelson was born March 5, 1918, in Independence, Iowa, the daughter of Andrew C. and Ella G. “Gertrude” Jochumsen Madsen. She was married to Ray E. Nelson on Oct. 1, 1939. He died on June 2, 1997. She was employed as a secretary to the president and vice president at Viking Pump in Cedar Falls for nine years, retiring in 1963. She also managed the gift shops at Sartori Memorial Hospital and Excelsior Springs (Missouri) Hospital. She was preceded in death by one son, Phillip Ray Nelson; two brothers; and two sisters. Survivors include four daughters, Peggy N. Leeds-Hoover, New Port Richey, Fla., Susan N. Patterson, Polo, Ill., Barbara J. Van Heiden, Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Julie M. Finley, Hurst, Texas; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Alice M. O’Dell, 68, Largo, Fla., died Monday, Oct. 12, 2009, at her residence. Mrs. O’Dell was born and raised in Orrick, Mo., the daughter of Donald and Opal Blyth. She and her husband, Jim, moved to Florida in 1960, where they started their family business, O’Dell Trailers. She was preceded in death by her father, Donald Blyth; and two brothers, Danny Blyth and Donald “Barney” Blyth. Survivors include her husband of 53 years, James R. “Jim” O’Dell Sr.; four sons, Jim Jr., Douglas, Wayne and Scotty; a daughter, Lourie Brady; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; her mother, Opal Blyth; two brothers, Jackie and Bub; her mother-in-law, Effie O’Dell; and other relatives. Beverly Ann “B.J.” Race, 60, Lake Ozark, Mo., died Friday, Oct. 9, 2009, at Lake Regional Health System in Osage Beach, Mo. Mrs. Race was born in Winston, Mo., and later moved to the Smithville area. She worked for many years for Commerce Bank of Kansas City. Later she was hired by Wells Fargo to help establish that company in the state of Missouri. After she and her husband, Harley, retired they moved to Lake of the Ozarks, where they owned and operated World League Wrestling. She was preceded in death by her mother and stepfather, Theda and Junior Blankenship; her father, Max Liston Palmer; two brothers, Frankie and Jackie Palmer; and one sister, Donna Cone. Survivors include her husband, Harley Race, of the home; two sons, Rob Jamison, Richmond, and Justin Race, Kansas City; sister, Manevalin Knapp, Aurora, Colo.; eight grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. Kenneth Eugene Renfrow, 85, Lawson, Mo., died Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009, at his home. Mr. Renfrow was born April 5, 1924, in Greenridge, the son of Robert Job and Minnie Alice (Bobbitt) Renfrow. He was married to Lena Mae Allison on July 30, 1949; she preceded him in death Feb. 19, 2007. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II and Korea. He was employed at Armco Steel for 35 years before retiring in 1986. In addition to his wife and his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Robert C. Renfrow. Survivors include nine children, Kenneth E. Renfrow Jr., Pamela J. Stafford and Cynthia T. Lee, all of Excelsior Springs, Ronald D. Renfrow, Savannah, Ruby D. Rafferty, James R. Renfrow, Susan Baker and Thomas A. Renfrow, all of Lawson, and Michael O. Renfrow, St. Joseph; 18 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Robert “Bob” Roy Rinehart, 83, Kearney, Mo., died Friday, Oct. 9, 2009, at his home. Mr. Rinehart was born Nov. 26, 1925, in Kansas City, the son of Charles Daniel and Helen Agnes (Anderson) Rinehart. He was an AT&T Pioneer. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Raytown. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Rinehart and Brice Rinehart. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Clara (Murray) Rinehart; children, Daniel Rinehart, Janice Snowberger, James Rinehart, Brian Rinehart and Barbara Lawless; sister, Barbara Kurtzeborn; brothers, Philip Rinehart and John Rinehart; 20 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. Mary Ann Schwarz, 84, Lawson, Mo., died Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2009, at her daughter’s home in Lawson. Mrs. Schwarz was born Dec. 28, 1924, in Excelsior Springs, the daughter of Charles Stephen and Lidia Livina (Cook) Lewis. She was married to Henry Schwarz on June 14, 1941, in Kansas City, Kan.; he preceded her in death July 29, 2007. She was raised in Excelsior Springs, and in 1946 they moved to Lawson, where they have since lived. In addition to her husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Virginia Jaudoni; and a great-granddaughter, Megan Jones. Survivors include one daughter, Linda Jones, Lawson; four sons, Mike Schwarz, Liberty, Steve Schwarz, Excelsior Springs, Dave Schwarz, Lawson, and Hank Schwarz, Omaha, Neb.; 19 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Thelma Coleen Scott, 93, died Monday, Oct. 26, 2009. Ms. Scott was born Sept. 8, 1916, in Rayville, the daughter of Wade Hampton and Emma Mae (O’Dell) McGinnis. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, J.W. Scott; a grandson, Donald Woods; six sisters; and one brother. Emma Pauline Sisk, 93, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2009, at her home. Mrs. Sisk was born Aug. 12, 1916, in Excelsior Springs, the daughter of Charles Alen and Stella Mae (Halsey) Duncan. She was married to Ferril Sisk on May 13, 1933; he survives of the home. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Excelsior Springs. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, J.C. Sisk; two grandchildren; and two brothers, Clarence Snyder and Willard Duncan. Jackie J. Smith Sr., 74, formerly of Richmond, Mo., died Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009, at Liberty Terrace Care Center. Mr. Smith was born June 20, 1935, in St. Joseph, the son of Edward Benjamin and Doris Aleine (Mishler) Smith. He had been a farmer before retiring in 1995. He was a member of Richmond Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carrie Louise Smith, in 2002; a brother, Bob Smith; and a sister, Sue Stade. Georgia St. John
Georgia Ann St. John, 73, Lebanon, Mo., died Saturday, Oct. 10, 2009, in Lebanon. Ms. St. John was born Jan. 17, 1936, in Excelsior Springs, the daughter of Ralph and Eva Melling Summers. She owned and operated a convenience store. She was married to Arthur St. John on Jan. 22, 1954. She attended White Oak Pond Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur St. John. Survivors include two sons, Mike St. John and his wife, Marsha, Lebanon, and Tim St. John and his wife, Coby, Excelsior Springs; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Margaret Swartley
Margaret Elizabeth Swartley, 84, Excelsior Springs, Mo. (formerly of Englewood, Fla.), died Monday, Oct.26, 2009, at Liberty Hospital in Liberty, Mo. Ms. Swartley was born June 9, 1925, in New York City, N.Y., the daughter of Eugene and Dorothy (Severn) Hart. She was owner and operator of her own business, Grooming by Margaret. In 1980 she was the first vice-president of Animal Aid and in 1981 was president of the animal society in Florida. She also volunteered for Meals on Wheels and the Salvation Army. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her longtime companion, Joseph Pearson; and a grandson, Robby Hayden. Survivors include four daughters, Nadine Hayden, Monsey, N.Y., Diane Selz, Wyoming, Minn., Susan Grisham, Excelsior Springs, and Cindy Kanan, Cameron, Mo.; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Dennis VanDierendonck
Dennis R. VanDierendonck, 60, Liberty, Mo., died Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2009. Mr. VanDierendonck was born July 29, 1949, in Kansas City. He worked for Ford Motor Company at the Claycomo plant for 41 years. He was preceded in death by his father, John VanDierendonck. Billy Wayne VanOster, 62, Richmond, Mo., died Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2009, at his home. Mr. VanOster was born Sept. 24, 1946, in Fleming, the son of Roy Junior and Emma Esther (Palmer) VanOster. He was married to Nancy Marion Scharff on June 29, 1968; she survives, of the home. He was employed with the General Motors Fairfax Plant until his retirement in 1998 after 30 years of service. He was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his father on May 14, 1988; and one brother, David VanOster, on May 14, 1999. Gerald David "Jerry" Vermillion, 68, Lawson, Mo., died Friday, Oct. 2, 2009, at the Excelsior Springs Hospital in Excelsior Springs, Mo. Mr. Vermillion was born May 26, 1941, in Kansas City, the son of Floyd W.L. and Mary Evelyn (Hollyfield) Vermillion. He was married to Donna (Frobish) Vermillion on Sept. 18, 1958; she survives of the home. He worked for Ford Motor Company. Bette Wojtkiewicz, 78, Liberty, Mo., died Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009, at her home. Ms. Wojtkiewicz was born Aug. 12, 1931, in Jefferson City, the daughter of Ralph E. and Edith Marie (Stamper) Lupardus. She was married to Eugene R. Wojtkiewicz in January 1953. They formerly owned and oeprated the local newspapers in Lockwood and Golden City. She was a member of Second Baptist Church in Liberty. Larry Lavon Workman Sr., 69, Henderson, Nev., died Friday, Oct. 16, 2009. Mr. Workman was born May 18, 1940, in Greeley, Colo., the son of Leslie W. and Mathilda Workman. He was married to Nancy Houchin on Feb. 9, 1960. They owned Workman’s Greener Lawn Service in Great Bend, Kan., for 14 years. After retirement, they moved to Henderson, where they lived for seven years. He had been the golf course superintendent in Great Bend, Kan., Ellsworth, Kan., Independence, Mo., and Excelsior Springs, Mo. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Lyle Workman. Richard L. “Dick” Wright, 66, Rayville, Mo., passed away Saturday, Oct. 3, 2009, at his home. Born October 4, 1942, in Lima, Ohio, he was the son of Joseph and Iris (Graves) Wright. He was married to Loretta Uehling, and she preceded him in death Dec. 15, 1982. On Oct. 28, 1983, he married Donna R. Booth. He is survived by his wife, Donna, of the home; two daughters, Sherry Fontenot, Kansas City, Mo., and Kelly Young, Liberty, Mo.; one son, Richard A. Wright, Gladstone, Mo.; one stepdaughter, Chris Moore, Blue Springs, Mo.; one stepson, Phillip M. Booth, St. Joseph, Mo.; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister, Sherry Jo; and one brother, Edward Joseph. Dick was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving in the United States Air Force. He was employed with Certain-Teed Fiberglass in Kansas City, Kan., for 40 years. He was a member of the VFW of Richmond and Rock Falls Baptist Church.
