"Bill" Adkins
Hugh "Bill" Adkins, 88, Independence, Mo., died Monday, Oct. 6, 2008, at his home. Survivors include his wife, June Adkins, of the home; three sons, Bob Adkins, Independence, David Adkins, Waverly, and Ron Adkins, Kearney; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A visitation was held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, at Speaks Suburban Chapel in Independence. Services were set for 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 10, at the chapel. Burial in Mt. Washington Cemetery.

Waneta Allnutt
Waneta Fae Allnutt, 84, Richmond, Mo., died Sunday, Oct. 12, 2008, at Shirkey Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Richmond, Mo. Ms. Allnutt was born Oct. 30, 1923, in Independence. She was preceded in death by her husband, Victor Allnutt. Survivors include her daughter, Barbara Hamit, Santa Fe, N.M.; and son, Steve Hamit, Greeley, Colo. Cremation. There are no services scheduled. Arrangements are through Polley Funeral Home in Richmond.

Betty Barnes
Betty Sue Barnes, 76, Lawson, Mo. (formerly of Warsaw, Mo.), died Friday, Oct. 10, 2008. Ms. Barnes was born Aug. 11, 1932, in Sharon, Tenn., the daughter of William and Ellen Wallace Brock. She worked as a sales clerk. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Barnes Sr.; two sisters; one brother; and one granddaughter, Tammy. Survivors include one son, Robert L. Barnes Jr., Olathe, Kan.; daughters, Cindy Cox and Reba McCormick, both of Lawson; one brother, William Brock Jr., Jacksonville, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13, at Bross & Spidle Funeral Home; burial in Old Union Cemetery in Lawson. Visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to a hospice of the donor's choice.

Winoka Bell
Winoka Fern Bell, 97, passed away Sunday, Oct. 12, 2008, at Excelsior Springs Nursing & Rehab Center in Excelsior Springs, Mo. Ms. Bell was born May 13, 1911, in Breckenridge, the daughter of Wiley and Lena James. She was married to Thomas Vivian Bell on Nov. 9, 1930. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Breckenridge. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband; daughters, Esther Lowery and Jewel Richardson; grandson, Craig Hargrave; son-in-law, Tom Berg; six brothers; and one sister. Survivors include her children, Beverly Hargrave (Lloyd), Breckenridge, Mo., Peggy Bell, San Diego, Calif., Robert Bell (Yvonne), Lucedale, Miss., Jack Bell (Betty), Lathrop, Mo., and Darlene Berg, Excelsior Springs, Mo.; son-in-law, Jim Richardson, Charlton, N.Y.; two sisters, Esther Miller, Chillicothe, Mo., and Helen Dixon (Joseph Jr.), Jamesport, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at the United Methodist Church in Breckenridge, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will immediately follow in Rose Hill Cemetery in Breckenridge. Arrangements are through Pitts Funeral Home in Breckenridge. Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church in Breckenridge or a charity of the donor's chioce.

Kathy Bennett
Kathy Louise Bennett, 46, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Sunday, Oct. 19, 2008, at Excelsior Springs Medical Center. Ms. Bennett was born Nov. 27, 1962, in Kansas City, the daughter of John Cleveland and Clara Louise (Downing) Wooten. She was preceded in death by her father; one sister, Linda Mabrito; and one brother, Michael Wooten. Survivors include her mother and stepfather, Vernon and Louise Stephenson, Excelsior Springs; one daughter, Tina Whitmore, Excelsior Springs; one son, Aaron Stephenson, Excelsior Springs; and one brother, Jerry Wooten, Corder. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Paradise Cemetery at Paradise, Mo. Memorial contributions may be made to the Kathy Bennett Memorial Fund, in care of Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs.

Violet Bloss
Violet Marie Bloss, 78, Richmond, Mo., died Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2008, at her home. Visitation will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, followed by services at 2 p.m., both at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond; burial in Lakeside Cemetery in Sumner.

Sharon Boxx
Sharon Lee Boxx, 65, Topeka, Kan. (formerly of Mosby, Mo.), died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2008, at the Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka, Kan. Ms. Boxx was born Nov. 15, 1942, in Mosby, Mo., the daughter of Forest Albert and Letha Jane (Linch) Sullard. She was married to Bennie Boxx on May 20, 1960. Following her education in Mosby, she had worked at IHOP as a cook and waitress. For many years she cared for her daughter and her mother in her home. She was a member of the Mosby Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Sue Boxx, on Dec. 8, 1998; and two sisters. Survivors include one son, Ben Boxx, Berryton, Kan.; two sisters, Martha Thompson, Little Elm, Texas, and Donna Chenault, Kansas City, Kan.; her former husband, Bennie Boxx, Wilcox, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 27, at Hillcrest Cemetery in Excelsior Springs, Mo. Visitation will be held from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Monday at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs.

George Brown
George A. Brown, 78, died Friday, Oct. 17, 2008, at the Taylor Hospice House in Des Moines, Iowa. Mr. Brown was born July 6, 1930, in Richmond, Mo., the son of Claude and Beatrice Irene (Bellis) Brown. He was married to Shirley Ann (Bullock) Brown on Dec. 16, 1950. After college, he started out farming, then worked for Buick, Oldsmobile and Pontiac. In 1951 he returned to farming with his father. He later worked for Sutherland Lumber Company before retiring. He was a member of the Lawson Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Brenda; and one sister, Wanda. Survivors include his wife, Shirley, of the home; five sons, Philip Eugene Brown, Ottumwa, Iowa, William Wayne Brown, Lawson, Mo., Steven Alvin Brown, Alexandria, Va., and Michael Joseph Brown and Paul Kent Brown, both of Springfield, Mo.; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 20, at the Lawson Baptist Church in Lawson, Mo. Burial was in South Point Cemetery in Orrick, Mo. Arrangements are through Polley Funeral Home in Lawson. Memorial contributions may be made to the Missouri Baptist Children's Home or the Lawson Baptist Church Building Fund.

Sarah Burcham
Sarah M. Burcham, 70, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008, at her home surrounded by her family. She was preceded in death by her husband and parents, as well as an infant daughter. Survivors include two sons, Ron Burcham and Kevin Burcham; a sister, Ann Tunner, Arizona; and three grandchildren. Services were set for Monday. Oct. 6, at Pisgah Baptist Church in Excelsior Springs.

"Burnie" Burton
Burnis Howard "Burnie" Burton, 77, Liberty, Mo., died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2008. Mr. Burton was born Aug. 9, 1931, in Pleasant Hill, the son of Ray H. and Mamie O. (Bogner) Burton. He was married to Evelyn L. Trewett on June 10, 1961. He was a teacher at Crane, Drexel and Orrick before the Burtons moved to Liberty in 1969. There he taught choral music at Liberty High School for five years, then served as the guidance counselor at Liberty Junior High Schol until he retired in 1983. After that, he worked for two years at Carpentour Travel Agency, then was co-owner and manager of Travel Unlimited for 20 years until it closed in 2005. He was a member of Liberty Christian Church. He was preceded in death by an infant sister, Helen Louise Burton. Survivors include his wife, Evelyn L. Burton, of the home; son, Brian Burton, Smithville; daughter, Holly Weber, Liberty; brother, Billy "Bill" Burton, Warrensburg; and four grandchildren. A celebration of his life was held at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 27, at Liberty Christian Church, followed by an ice cream social. Arrangements are through Church-Archer-Pasley Funeral Home in Liberty. Marilyn Clark
Marilyn M. Clark, 86, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Monday, Oct. 27, 2008, at the Excelsior Springs Convalescent Center. Ms. Clark was born in 1922, the daughter of Clyde and Winnifred (Strobel) May. She was married to Orville Gene Miller in 1942. She and Mr. Miller owned and operated a gas station and store between Excelsior Springs and Lawson. Mr. Miller preceded her in death in 1963. In 1970 she was was married to Wendall R. Clark. She and Mr. Clark owned and operated Clark's Market in Excelsior Springs for several years. Wendall preceded her in death in 1994. She was a member of the Rock Falls Baptist Church near Excelsior Springs. In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by one son, Robert Miller; and one sister, Eleanor Shugrart. Survivors include two daughters, Sharon Elliott, Excelsior Springs, and Shirley Rubino, New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; two brothers, Keith May, Winchester, Kan., and Robert Earl May, Topeka, Kan.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 3, at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2, at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Masonic Cemetery in Excelsior Springs. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.

William Clevenger
William Eugene Clevenger, 78, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Friday, Oct. 24, 2008, at Excelsior Springs Medical Center. Mr. Clevenger was born Sept. 14, 1930, in Kansas City, the son of Bennie Ivan and Beulah Mae (Bogart) Clevenger. He was married to Shirley Ann Norris on Sept. 20, 1948; she survives, of the home. After serving in the U.S. Air Force, he worked briefly for the city of Cameron before becoming a truck driver. He had been employed by Jack Cooper, Chief Freight Lines and Ryder Pie before retiring. He was a member of the Assembly of God Church. He was preceded in death by his parents. In addition to his wife, survivors include five children, Sandra Renfrow, DeKalb, Diane Lewis, Lawson, David Clevenger, Holt, Pam Stafford, Ochlocknee, Ga., and Bennie Clevenger, Lawson; 13 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. Burial will be in the Masonic Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 27, at the funeral home, with a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Children's Hospital.

Gary Conyers, Sr.
Gary Dean Conyers Sr., 65, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Friday, Oct. 10, 2008, at his home. Mr. Conyers was born Sept. 10, 1943, at Orrick, the son of Byron Sheets and Minnie Faye (Teegarden) Conyers. He was married to Clara Lee Scott on April 1, 1964; she survives. He had worked for Peerless Products and Whitaker Cable until they closed. He was employed by Commercial Tooling as a tool and die master for more than 20 years. He was of the Baptist faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Larry, Eric, and Jan Robert Conyers; and one sister, Beverly Conyers. In addition to his wife, survivors include one daughter, Sherelle Palomarez, Excelsior Springs; two sons, Gary Conyers Jr., Richmond, and Larry Conyers, Excelsior Springs; two brothers, James Conyers, Texas, and John Conyers, Missouri City; one sister, Virginia Lierman, Liberty; and seven grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, at the funeral home. Burial will be in South Point Cemetery in Orrick.

William Cravens
William Cravens, 84, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Monday, Oct. 27, 2008, at his home. Mr. Cravens was born Jan. 13, 1924, in Kingman, Ariz., the son of Orus and Alice (Schernerhorn) Cravens. He was married to Mabel Lamberton on Nov. 22, 1946. He worked for the FAA for 50 years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Paul, Earl, and Forest; and his sister Neoma. Survivors include his wife, Mabel Cravens, of the home; sons, Bill Cravens, Illinois, Ron Cravens, Leawood, Kan., and Robert Cravens, Henderson, Nev.; daughters, Lora Cravens, Fargo, N.D., and Janet Reetz and Susan Fuller, both of Broomfield, Colo.; 17 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at noon Thursday, Oct. 30, at Hillcrest Cemetery in Excelsior Springs. A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. A Masonic service will begin at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the visitation.

Ruby Crippen
Ruby Lee Crippen, 77, Kansas City, Mo., died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008, at her home. Ms. Crippen was retired from 30 years of service at North Kansas City Hospital, and had been a door greeter at Wal-Mart for 13 years. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Connie Sue Crippen. Survivors include three daughters, Carolyn Dannaldson, Kearney, Cathy Bland, Wichita, Kan., and Cheryl Miller, Kansas City; one son, Michael Crippen, Kansas City; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. A celebration of her life will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, at White Chapel Funeral Home in Gladstone.

Deborah Dixon-Wilson
Deborah L. Dixon-Wilson, 52, Richmond, Mo., died Saturday, Oct. 18, 2008 ,at St. Joseph Medical Center in Kansas City, Mo. Ms. Dixon-Wilson was born Oct. 23, 1955 in Brockton, Mass. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas E. Wilson; and son, Jimmy Dixon. Survivors include her mother, Virginia Gonsalves, Brockton, Mass.; granddaughter, Paige Ann Dixon, Orrick, Mo.; companion, Arthur Scott Prall, Richmond, Mo.; and three brothers and three sisters, all of Brockton, Mass. Cremation. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are through Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs.

Stephen Donnell
Stephen Del-Roy Donnell, 47, Liberty, Mo., died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008, at his home. Mr. Donnell was born July 5, 1961, in Windsor, the son of Stanley Eugene and Etta Jean (Egbert) Donnell. He worked for Price Chopper on North Oak Trafficway. Survivors include three children, Rachel Donnell and Lindsey Donnell, both of St. Joseph, and Stephen Matthew Donnell, of the home; his parents, Stanley and Etta Jean Donnell, Liberty; a brother, Stanley Donnell, Liberty; and four sisters, Virginia Hill, Liberty, Susan Palomo, Gladstone, Cathy Bunch, Liberty, and Kristy Langle, Kansas City. Visitation was held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, at Park Lawn Northland Chapel in Liberty; services were set for 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 10, at the chapel. Interment in Glenridge Cemetery.

John Dugger
John Henry Dugger, 80, Clinton, Mo. (formerly of Weir, Kan.), died Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008, at Westwood Golden Living Center in Clinton, Mo. Mr. Dugger was born Aug. 1, 1928, in Weir, Kan. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley (Williams) Dugger; two brothers; and one sister. Survivors include one daughter, Joy; five brothers, including Henry H. Dugger Jr., Richmond; and three sisters. The family will receive friends at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 11, at Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Weir, Kan., followed by funeral services at 3 p.m.; burial with military honors in New Pleasant View Cemetery.

"Dick" Dunn
Richard "Dick" John Dunn, 70, Phoenix, Ariz., died Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2008. Mr. Dunn was born April 17, 1938, in Cleveland, Ohio. He worked at the Trans World Airlines overhaul base in Kansas City, Mo. In addition to his parents, John and Helene Dunn, he was preceded in death by a sister, Jane Hulse; and a brother, Jack Dunn. Survivors include his wife, Joanne Macek-Dunn; sons, John Dunn, Kearney, Mo., and Rick Dunn, Kansas City, Mo.; daughter, Anne Epstein, Fairway, Kan.; stepson, Scott Widor, St. Cloud, Minn., stepdaughter, Kristin Cervera, O'Fallon, Mo.; and 10 grandchildren. A service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 10, at St. Rose Chapel in Anthem, Ariz. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Rose Church Building Fund.

Lenvil Elliott I
Lenvil O. Elliott I, 57, Richmond, Mo., died Sunday, Oct. 12, 2008, at Ray County Memorial Hospital in Richmond, Mo. Mr. Elliott was born Sept. 2, 1951, in Lexington, the son of Lenvil Nelson and Helen Constance (Williams) Elliott. After he earned a bachelor's degree, he was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals and played running back from 1973 to 1979. He was then traded to the San Francisco 49ers and played runing back from 1979 until the 49ers won Super Bowl XVI and he retired in 1981. He lived most of his life in Richmond and was of the Christian faith. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, William A. Elliott. Survivors include one son, Lenvil O. Elliott II, Cameron; one daughter, Melissa R. Elliott, Richmond; one sister, Brenda Bowler, Anchorage, Alaska; his former wife and lifelong friend, Linda Elliott, Richmond; and two grandsons. Visitation was held Wednesday, Oct. 15, at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond. Funeral services were held Thursday, Oct. 16, at the funeral home; inurnment will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to an education fund for Mr. Lenvil's grandsons.


"Jean" Fletcher
Evelyn Jeanette "Jean" Fletcher, 89, formerly of Kearney, Mo., died Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2008, at New Mark Care Center. Ms. Fletcher was born Nov. 6, 1918, in Mandan, N.D., the daughter of Harry J. and Hulda Florence Huss Hanson. She was married to Owen Fletcher on April 12, 1947; he preceded her in death in 1989. She was a homemaker and a member of Kearney First Baptist Church. In addition to her husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers and one sister. Survivors include two sons, Kenneth Owen Fletcher, Holt, and Allen Joseph Fletcher, Kansas City; six daughters, Sylvia A. Fletcher, Hollister, Marilyn Elaine Hankins, Kirbyville, Carol Jean Gall, Independence, Irene Kaye Pendleton, Smithville, Sharon Rose Fletcher, Hollister, and Janice Lorraine Fletcher, Smithville; one sister, Edna Laman, Bowling Green, Ky.; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at Kearney First Baptist Church; burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Kearney. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the church. Arrangements are through Fry-Bross & Spidle Funeral Home in Kearney. Memorial contributions may be made to Grace Hospice.

Emma Foley
Emma Amelia Foley, 88, St. Peters, Mo., died Friday, Oct. 10, 2008, in St. Peters. Ms. Foley was born Aug. 1, 1920, in Richmond, the daughter of Guiseppe and Clara Mattivi. She was a homemaker and a member of Lighthouse Tabernacle Church in St. Charles. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil William Foley; a daughter, Connie B. Foley; and a brother, "Little Joe" Mattivi. Survivors include two sons, Gary W. Foley, Winfield, and Marcus D. Foley, St. Peters; three daughters, Jeanette M. Lin, Wentzville, Beverly A. Fogliani, St. Charles, and Melanie A. Scarpiniti, O'Fallon; brother, Frank Mattivi, Excelsior Springs; sister, Mary Fanning; and six grandchildren. Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13, at Baue Funeral and Memorial Center Chapel in St. Charles. Visitation was held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13, and from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13, at the funeral center. Interment was in St. Charles Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's research.

Gayle E. Frost, 55, Lawson, Mo., died Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2008, at her home. Funeral services were set for 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond. Visitation was scheduled for 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Crossroads Hospice.

Eileen Garrett
Eileen R. Garrett, 93, Kansas City North, Mo., died Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008, at her home. Survivors include four daughters, Marjorie Argeropoulos, Kansas City, Kan., Beverly Rooks, Sibley, and Deloris Sue Garrett and Mary Lou Garrett, both of Liberty; five grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, at Northmoor United Methodist Church in Kansas City; cremation. The family will receive friends during the hour before the service at the church. Arrangements are through Meyers Funeral Chapel Northland in Parkville. Getty L. Gaynor, 73, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008. In addition to her parents, Jesse Allen Guyer and Buella Tennessee Guy, Ms. Gaynor was preceded in death by a brother, Gerald Dean Guyer. Tony Goolsby, 48, Kansas City, Mo., died Sunday, Oct. 19, 2008. Mr. Goolsby was born July 17, 1960, in Excelsior Springs, Mo., the son of Bob and Mary (Marrant) Goolsby. He was preceded in death by his father, Bob H. Goolsby; and brother, Robert K. Goolsby. Survivors include his mother, Mary J. Goolsby, St. Joseph; son, Anthony Glenn Goolsby Jr., Lexington; daughters, Tammy M. Mooren and husband, William, Germany, and Susan D. Robert Grider
Robert Samuel Grider, 80, Richmond, Mo., died Thursday, Oct. 9, 2008, at his home. Mr. Grider was born Nov. 7, 1927, in Carroll County, the son of William C. and Ethel M. (Lee) Grider. He was married to Ruth Bowser on April 1, 1946; she preceded him in death Nov. 26, 2001. He lived most of his life in Ray and Carroll counties. He had been retired from truck driving since 1982. In addition to his wife and his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, William C. Grider, Bedford D. Grider, and Bennie E. Grider. Survivors include one brother, Milton Grider, Kearney; and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 13, at Oak Hill Cemetery in Carrollton. Stanley Gwin
Stanley E. Gwin, 75, died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008, at the Missouri Veterans' Home in Cameron, Mo. Mr. Gwin was born June 18, 1933, in Kansas City, the son of Robert and Hazel (Spears) Gwin. He retired from the security department of the General Motors Leeds plant. Later he drove a bus for the Liberty School District. He had lived in Liberty for 47 years, but had resided at the Missouri Veterans1 Home for the past 18 months. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly Gwin; brother, Robert Gwin; grandson, Jason Gwin; and granddaughter, Emily Beaven. Mark Hartman
Mark A. Hartman, 43, Olathe, Kan., died Friday, Oct. 3, 2008. Mr. Hartman was born Oct. 23, 1964, in Excelsior Springs, Mo. He was a lieutenant with the Johnson County Sheriff's Department, serving more than 21 years and receiving a bronze Valor Award for outstanding law enforcement. Survivors include his wife of 21 years, Ginger; two children, Gage and Greer; parents, Roy and Wanda Hartman; brother, Randall E. Hartman; and nieces and nephews. "Gene" Hull
Thomas E. "Gene" Hull, 83, Liberty, Mo., died Monday, Oct. 13, 2008. Mr. Hull was born Dec. 27, 1924, in Pueblo, Colo., the son of Oswald Tom Hull and Vina (Sowder) Hull. He was married to Lila Barnes in January 1943. He lived in Liberty all of his adult life, serving as a volunteer fireman. He worked as a laboratory technician for Cook Paint and Varnish Company for 43 years before he retired in 1985. He was a member of Second Baptist Church in Liberty. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Ivan Hull. Thomas C. Jackson, 81, Kearney, Mo., died Saturday, Oct. 18, 2008. Mr. Jackson was born Feb. 10, 1927, in Clinton, Iowa, the son of Charles E. and Rachel Maynard Jackson. He was married to Joan Peters. He worked as a repairman on banking equipment. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. James Jr. in Savannah, Ga. On July 5, 1958, he married Ruth Patterson in Ridgewood, N.J. After working for the Ford Motor Company for 37 years, Louis retired as a final repairman. Eunice Johnson, 89, Pleasant Valley, Mo., died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2008. Ms. Johnson was born June 18, 1919, in Springfield, the daughter of James Arley and Ursula Gordon Owens. She was married to Wayne Johnson on Jan. 30, 1938; they were married for 50 years before his death. She was a housewife. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Vivian Holt. Larry King
Larry Wayne King, 56, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Monday, Oct. 6, 2008, at North Kansas City Hospital in North Kansas City, Mo. Mr. King was born July 10, 1952, in Missouri, the son of Carl G. and Virginia (Ashcraft) King. He was married to Valerie G. Thompson on Feb. 28, 1975. Larry was an exceptional musician, and was very active with the Mosby Opry, the MoKan Gospel Music Association, and King Cat Music. He was also very active in many of the local churches in Excelsior Springs, and considered himself somewhat of a street evangelist. Larry would often play music for the residents of the local nursing homes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Garrett Gurlock and Blaze King. Survivors include his wife, Valerie King, of the home; daughters, Amy King, Excelsior Springs, and Beth King, Lawson; son, Christian King, Excelsior Springs; brothers, Richard King, Oklahoma, Jack King, Ferrelview, and Lee King and Terry King, both of Excelsior Springs; sisters, Ruth Springston, Branson, and Sharon Piranio, Hastings, Neb.; and two grandchildren on the way. Clifford McCanon
Clifford Dean McCanon 81, Belton, Mo., died Monday, Oct. 27, 2008, at Research Belton Hospital. Mr. McCanon was born Feb. 8, 1927, in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Rupert and Leslie McCanon. He graduated from Excelsior Springs High School in 1949. He owned and operated several area dry cleaners, retiring in 1990. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Gordon McCanon. Survivors include two sons, Mark L. McCanon, Lawrence, Kan., and Brian McCanon, Virginia Beach, Va.; three stepdaughters, Susan Hull, Irvine, Calif., Julie Boeh, Overland Park, Kan., and Claire Feierabend, Kansas City, Mo.; one brother, Kenneth McCanon, Winfield, Kan.; one sister, Gwen Sharples, Chinook, Mont.; three grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren. *Harold Medley
Harold L. Medley, 78, of Gladstone, Mo., lost a courageous battle with the "silent killer," pancreatic cancer, on Friday, Oct. 24, 2008. Harold passed peacefully from this world at home while surrounded by his family and friends. He is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Ellen, of the home; four children, Sandra Teegarden of Excelsior Springs, and Eddie Shields, Robert Shields, and Donald Shields, all from Kansas City; two brothers, Richard Medley and Pete Medley, both from Excelsior Springs; and two sisters, Donna Kennedy and Marion Medley, both from Excelsior Springs. He had 10 surviving grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; countless nieces and nephews; and "Prissy," the family pet. Harold was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Scenie Medley; his brother, Earl Medley, of Excelsior Springs; brother, Glen Medley, of Gladstone; sister, Lois Curry, of Excelsior Springs; and one grandson, Scotty Shields, from Kansas City. Harold was born in Newton, Kan., in July of 1930, and served in the Navy during the Korean conflict. After discharge from the Navy, he returned home to Excelsior Springs, where he worked as chief engineer at the Elms Hotel until it closed in 1970. Following the closure of the Elms, he made his living as a maintenance specialist at several apartment complexes in the area. Harold's favorite things in life were fishing, good food and being with his family and friends. He is sadly missed by his family and numerous friends throughout the area. We thank the Crossroads Hospice family for their wonderful assistance in making our "pap" as comfortable as possible during his final chapter on this earth. Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, at White Chapel Funeral Home in Gladstone. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, at the funeral home. Janice Jean Mercer, 71, of Excelsior Springs, Mo., died at 1:43 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2008, at Excelsior Springs Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Excelsior Springs. Janice was born on July 3, 1937, in Richmond, Mo., to Robert and Bessie Mae (Davis) Hardie Jr. She married Francis Lester Mercer of Richmond on March 14, 1959. He preceded her in death on Dec. 25, 2004. Survivors include three sons and two daughters-in-law, Rick and Marilyn Mercer of Pierce City, Mo., Vaughn Mercer of Kansas City, Mo., and Robert and Lorena Mercer of Holt, Mo.; one daughter and son-in-law, Penny and Danny Swearingin of Pittsburg, Mo. Ten grandhchildren and four great-grandchildren also survive. In addition to her parents and husband, Janice was preceded in death by one sister, Shirley Clemons. Janice was a secretary for the Kansas City Convention Bureau. She was a member of the St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Excelsior Springs. She had lived most of her life in the Excelsior Springs area. She was a member of the Clay County Genealogy Association. Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 17, at Richmond Memory Gardens Cemetery in Richmond, Mo. Richard Miller Sr.
Richard Alan Miller Sr., 68, Holt, Mo., died Friday, Oct. 3, 2008, at North Kansas City Hospital in North Kansas City, Mo. Mr. Miller was born June 15, 1939, in Chicago, the son of Phillip and Viola Koch Miller. He moved to the Kansas City area in 1968. He was married to Janet Kamadulski on Feb. 27, 1970, and they lived in Holt. He was an assembly line worker at Ford Motor Company for 32 years, retiring in 2000. He had served in the United States Air Force from 1959 to 1963, and re-enlisted in the Air National Guard in 1974, retiring as a tech sergeant in 1996. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Janet; two sons, Michael Miller, Holt, and Richard Miller Jr., Lawson; one brother, Wayne Miller, San Francisco; two sisters, Phyllis Rowold, St. Louis, and Pat Leader, Tulsa, Okla.; and six grandchildren. Michael Nail
Michael W. Nail, 56, Orrick, Mo., died Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008, at Ray County Memorial Hospital in Richmond, Mo. Mr. Nail was born June 9, 1952, in Lexington, the son of Donald Wayne and Donna Sue (Hall) Nail. He was married to Nancy Jo Lee on June 11, 1983; she survives. He was a lifelong resident of Orrick community and was a 1972 graduate of Orrick High School. When he was younger, he worked in his grandparents' store, Hall's Grocery. He then went to work for Ford Motor Company, where he was employed until his retirement after 35 years. He was a member of Union Baptist Church in Orrick. In addition to his grandparents, he was preceded in death by his mother. In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Charley Merriman, Orrick; one son, Jerry Nail, Orrick; his father, Donald Nail, Orrick; three brothers, Dave Nail, Orrick, Steve Nail, Richmond, and Dale Stagner, Stet; two sisters, Joan Lichty, Gladstone, and Susie Creswell, Independence; and two grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Rife Cemetery near Orrick, with inurnment to follow. There will be no public visitation. James Peak
James David Peak, 56, Excelsior Springs, Mo. (formerly of Lawson, Mo.), died Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2008, at Liberty Hospital in Liberty, Mo. Mr. Peak was born Jan. 24, 1952, in Tyronza, Ark., the son of James Jr. and Madeline (Shelton) Peak. He was married to Rita St. John on Oct. 29, 2001. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Danny Peak. Survivors include his wife, Rita Peak, of the home; son, David B. Peak, Excelsior Springs; daughters, Shelly Peak and Stacy N. Rev. Walter Pilecki
The Rev. Walter J. Pilecki, 90, Kansas City, Mo., died Monday, Oct. 27, 2008. Fr. Pilecki was ordained March 21, 1943, at St. Joseph Cathedral in Buffalo, N.Y. He came to the Kansas City Diocese (now Kansas City-St. Joseph Diocese) and served 65 years in the priesthood, including from 1961-1964 at St. Ann Parish in Excelsior Springs. After retiring in 2001, he moved to Blue Springs. Survivors include nieces and nephews. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church. At the time of his death, he was an owner/operator working for Waller Truck Company in Excelsior Springs. He had been a driver for more than 30 years. He was preceded in death by his father, Billy E. Sheridan; his paternal grandparents, William R. and Aris Jewell Sheridan; and his maternal grandparents, Belton and Zola Cook. Survivors include his wife, Debi Ann Sheridan; his children, Mark Anthony Sheridan, Roselyn Ann Sheridan, Cora Jewell Sheridan, and William Tristian Sheridan; his mother and stepfather, Reba and Robert Fuller, Pinetop, Ariz.; brother, Mike Sheridan, Oxnard, Calif.; and three grandchildren. *Rev. Msgr. Lawrence Speichinger
Rev. Msgr. Lawrence A. Speichinger, age 80, a resident of Chillicothe, Mo., passed away at Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph, Mo., on Thursday, Oct. 16, 2008. He was born on Nov. 30, 1927, the son of Phillip Lawrence and Adaline (Zapf) Speichinger in Mendon, Mo. Rev. Msgt. Lawrence A. Speichinger graduated from Conception High School in 1945. He then continued his education at Conception Seminary College until graduating in 1950, and from there went to Conception Seminary until 1955. He became an Ordained Priest on Dec. 24, 1955, at St. Boniface Church in Brunswick, Mo. Rev. Msgr. Lawrence a. Speichinger started serving the people of Missouri in 1056. At St. Columban's Catholic Church in Chillicothe. He stayed there until 1961, when he moved to Christ the King Catholic Church in Kansas City. In 1964, he moved back to Chillicothe to assist at St. Columban's Catholic Church. While there, he taught at Bishop Hogan School and St. Joseph Academy, where he also coached boys' and girls' basketball. During that time, he also served as Chaplain at Girls State Training School for Girls. Leaving Chillicothe again in 1969, he moved to St. Joseph Church at Easton until 1979, also serving as Chaplain at St. Joseph State Mental Hospital from 1969 until 1982. Continuing to serve Missouri, he then moved to St. Ann Church in Excelsior Springs, where he started the Good Samaritan Center in November 1986. There he stayed until retiring back to his home in Chillicothe in 1991. Father Spike was an avid hunter and fisherman. Survivors include two brothers, James E. Speichinger, Mendon, Mo., and Paul E. Speichinger, Columbia, Mo.; five sisters, Gertrude Leonard, Keytesville, Mo., Sister Raphael Speichinger-OSF, Laverne Heights, Savannah, Mo., Looretta Adams, Salisbury, Mo., Anna Rose Speichinger, Columbia, Mo., and Marjorie L. Speichinger, Mendon, Mo.; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and -nephews, and great-great-nieces and -nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Robert and Vincent. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, at St. Columban's Catholic Church in Chillicothe, Mo. A Parish Rosary will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 20, at the church, with a family visitation to follow. Friends may call from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday at Lindley Funeral Home in Chillicothe, and from 4 to 9 p.m. Monday at the church. Prior to services on Tuesday, there will be a scheduled family visitaiton from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church. Burial will be in St. Raphael Cemetery in Indian Grove, Mo. Fred Taylor
Fred R. Taylor, 80, Liberty, Mo., died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008, at his home. Mr. Taylor was born Sept. 16, 1928, in New Franklin, the son of Oran Ray and Exie Loretta Gilmore Taylor. He was married to Veirle M. Patterson on April 5, 1953. He had been a truck driver, and worked for Mid-American Truck Lines and later the United States Postal Service. He was preceded in death by his wife, Veirle M. Taylor, in 2005; a brother, John Taylor, in 2005; and a sister, Hilman Lake, in 2007. Survivors include his sons, Fred R. Taylor II, Liberty, Howard W. Taylor, Overland Park, Kan., and Stanton K. Taylor, Loveland, Ohio; a sister, Alice Carter, Higginsville; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A memorial service was set for 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, at Church-Archer-Pasley Funeral Home in Liberty; cremation. Military honors will be conducted at a later date. Margaret Thomas
J. Margaret Thomas, 85, Liberty, Mo., died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2008, at her home. Ms. THomas was born Feb. 27, 1923, in Mercer County, the daughter of Willie and Nellie Finney. She was a business woman, wife and mother. She was an active member of Liberty United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Stan Thomas; her brother, Glen Finney; and her sister, Catherine Campbell. Survivors include her brother, John Finney, Princeton, Mo.; sister, Mary Rogers, Pleasant Hill, Mo.; three sons, Brian Thomas, Liberty, Pat Thomas, Kearney, and Mike Thomas, Leawood, Kan.; six grandsons; and other relatives. Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, at Liberty United Methodist Church. A celebration of life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 27, also at Liberty United Methodist Church. Interment will follow the service at Glenridge Cemetery in Liberty. Arrangements are through Fry-Bross & Spidle Funeral Home in Kearney.

*Ronald Arthur Thornton, aka "The Pepsi Man"
Ron Thornton, 66, of Excelsior Springs, Mo., died at 12:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 31, 2008, at North Kansas City Hospital in North Kansas City, Mo. Ron was born on March 17, 1942, in Sparks, Kan., to Vivian Mae Thornton (Harness) and Raymond Arthur Thornton. He had been a longtime resident of Excelsior Springs, best known there as the "big, tall Pepsi man," having worked for Pepsi for more than 25 years. Ron served his country as a United States Marine during Vietnam. Ron was a Charter Member and Past Worthy President for the Eagles Lodge No. 3917 and was longtime member of the Elks Lodge No. 1001, both of Excelsior Springs, Mo. Ron married Patricia Marie Thornton (Stewart) on Aug. 18, 1973, in Excelsior Springs, Mo. She survives. Ron was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Judy Raye Standback; his brother, Jerry Lee Thornton; and two grandchildren. In addition to his wife, Ron is also survived by nine children, Rhonda Cowden, Azle, Texas, Kimberly Livingston, Kansas City, Mo., John Thornton, Crestline, Calif., Melissa Hinson, Lawson, Mo., Veronica Dalton, Rantoul, Ill., Raymond Thornton, Freeport, Ill., Miranda Thornton, Fort Worth, Texas, Amanda Bratton, Excelsior Springs, Mo., and Montana Thornton, Fort Worth, Texas, as well as one brother-in-law, Kenneth Standback, Carl Junction, Mo. Additional survivors include grandchildren, Sgt. Anthony Kiefer, Sgt. Darren Kiefer, Shelby Cowden, Justin Huebsch, Pvt. Brian Huebsch, Rebekah Huesbch, Paul J. Livingston, Guy Wayne Livingston, Hannah Thornton, Rachel Thornton, Seth Hinson, Mack Williams, William Key, Richie Dalton, Nick Dalton, Tara Dalton, Trinity Thornton, Harley Thornton, Rowan Thornton and Alex Thornton; and six great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, at Polley Funeral Home, with visitation from 2-3 p.m. Thursday. Military graveside services will be held at a later date at the Leavenworth National Cemetery in Leavenworth, Kan.


*Marvin Ware
Osie Marvin Ware, 63, of Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Sunday, Oct. 12, 2008, at his sister1s home. Marvin was born Dec. 23, 1944, in Excelsior Springs, Mo., the son of Osie Marion and Marjorie Hoffmann Ware. He was reared in Excelsior Springs and graduated from Excelsior Springs High in 1966. Marvin worked for Orbseal Inc. in Richmond, Mo., for 11 years, retiring in 2008. His family was very important to him, especially his nieces and nephew, with whom he loved spending time. In his spare time, Marvin enjoyed fixing up old bicycles and giving them to children who had none. He was preceded in death by his parents. Marvin is survived by a brother, Dallas Ware and his wife, Billie, Elliottsburg, Pa.; a sister, Cappi Darnell and her husband, Alan, Excelsior Springs; two nieces, Hailey Darnell and Shannon Danley; a nephew, Dallas Ware II; and six great-nieces and -nephews. It was Marvin's wish that his body be donated to Kansas City University of Medicine and Biological Science. Family and friends are invited to honor and celebrate his life from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19, at his home, 238 Valley St. Arrangements are through Bross & Spidle Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to United Cerebral Palsy Association, Kansas City Hospice or the American Cancer Society.

Irvin Yoakum
Irvin Dean Yoakum, 69, Richmond, Mo., died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmomd; burial in Prairie Ridge Cemetery in Polo. Visitation is from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Julian Soph's Educational Fund.
