Robert Bailey
Robert Doyle Bailey, 75, Sedalia, Mo., died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008, at his home after a brief battle with leukemia. Mr. Bailey was born Nov. 22, 1932, in Orrick, the son of Hallie G. and Fannie Bailey. He was married to Joyce M. Werle on March 20, 1954. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Morris Bailey and Billy Bailey. Survivors include his wife, Joyce Bailey; daughters, Julie Glisson, Roeland Park, Kan., and Janet Durbin, Lee's Summit; one brother, Glen Bailey, Independence; five grandchildren; and other relatives, including a brother-in-law, Raymond Werle, Orrick. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, at First Baptist Church in Sedalia. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3, also at the church. Graveside services and burial will take place at 4 p.m. Wednesday at South Point Cemetery in Orrick. Arrangements are through Heckart Funeral Home in Sedalia. Lois Boelsen
Lois Catherine Boelsen, 78, Richmond, Mo. (formerly of Carrollton, Mo.), died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008, at Shirkey Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Richmond. Mrs. Boelsen was born Nov. 26, 1929, in Carrollton, the daughter of Virgil and Lois (Buckner) Fergason. She was married to Harold Allen Boelsen on June 5, 1949. She was a member of First Christian Church in Carrollton, and had been past president of the Missouri Association of Mutual Insurance Companies Women's Auxiliary. For the last five years of her life, she lived at Shirkey Nursing and Rehab. She was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include her husband, Harold Boelsen, of the home; two daughters, Sandra Goodwin, Richmond, and Janice Boelsen, Blue Springs; two brothers, Dr. Virgil Lee Fergason, Decatur, Ill., and Charles Harvey Fergason, Carrollton; and one grandson. Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 1, at First Christian Church in Carrollton, with the Rev. Larry Gray and the Rev. Cheryl Sanders officiating. Burial in Carroll Memory Gardens in Carrollton. Friends were invited to call from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Monday at the church. Shirley Brungardt
Shirley Jean Brungardt, 66, Rayville, Mo., died Friday, Aug. 15, 2008, near Mosby, Mo., as the result of an automobile accident. Mrs. Brungardt was born June 5, 1942, in Kansas City, the daughter of Elton Chestien and Beulah (Coffman) Bowman. She was married to B.J. Brungardt on Dec. 21, 1973. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Richmond. She was a retired school teacher, having taught 37 years in the Grandview, Martin City and Richmond school districts, as well as the last three years in Title I remedial reading for several Northland parochial schools. She had been a candidate for the 36th District seat in the Missouri House of Representatives in 2000. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one grandchild, Aaron Brungardt. Survivors include her husband, B.J. Brungardt, of the home; one son, Clint Bonaventure Brungardt, Rayville; two daughters, Shannon Lewis, Flussbach, Germany, and Cassie Fletcher, Kansas City; one brother, J.C. Bowman, Odessa; one sister, Doris Simonis, Urbana; and 10 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Richmond. Visitation will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond, where the Rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville. Memorial contributions may be made to the Allen-Morton-Watkins Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution or to the Ray County Genealogy Society.
Dallas Calder
Dallas Calder, 75, Holt, Mo., died Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2008, on his farm. Mr. Calder was born Sept. 22, 1932, the son of Dallas Dea Calder and Myrtle Boggess. He was married to Anna Lee Nicholson on July 18, 2008. He was co-owner of two plumbing companies and retired after 20 years as maintenance crew leader at the Kearney Barn of the Missouri State Highway Department. He was a member of Holt Christian Church. Survivors include his wife, Anna Lee Calder; two daughters, Cyndy and Jenni; one sister, Peggy Headding, Fordland; and four grandchildren. Graveside memorial services will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Kearney.
Elinor Carter
Elinor A. Carter, 70, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Saturday, Aug. 2, 2008, at North Kansas City Hospital. Mrs. Carter was born Oct. 1, 1937, in Kansas City, the daughter of Gilbert Anthony and Cecilia Ann (Rhinehart) Carr. She was married to Lloyd R. Carter on Nov. 3, 1957. She worked for Michelle1s Beauty Salon and Sharon's Beauty Salon for 10 years. Afterward, she was a homemaker. She was a member of Pisgah Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Donald Carr, Jack Carr, Jay Carr and Gilbert Carr. Survivors include her husband, Lloyd Carter; one daughter, Cheryl Carter, Excelsior Springs; one son, William G. Carter, Lexington; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, August 8, at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Pisgah Cemetery in Excelsior Springs. Memorial congributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association or to Pisgah Cemetery.
Ruth Clark
Ruth Colene Clark, 87, Lawson, Mo., died Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008, at the Excelsior Springs Convalescent Center in Excelsior Springs, Mo. Colene was born on May 14, 1921 in Lawson, Mo., the daughter of John Ernest and Viola Jane (Mellon) Green. She was married to Robert Clark on March 21, 1938; he preceded her in death on Jan. 24, 1989. She worked as a homemaker. She was a member of the United Christian and Presbyterian Church in Lawson, Mo. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Belinda and Ron Sapp, Excelsior Springs; two grandchildren, Mendy Edwards and Chris Sapp; and four great-grandchildren, Landry and Dawson Edwards and Britnee and Makayla Sapp. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 18, at Polley Funeral Home in Lawson. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services, from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Lawson Cemetery. Helen Phyllis Clayton, 95, passed away at her home in Kansas City on Monday, Aug. 25, 2008. Helen was born June 15, 1913, in Parkston, S.D. She was the youngest in a family of nine children. She was married to Stacy "Stace" Clayton on May 13, 1933, in Livingston, Mont. She enjoyed 44 years of marriage and love with Stace, who was her best friend. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her son, Larry Lee Clayton; one grandchild; three great-grandchildren; five brothers; and three sisters. Surviving are five sons, Stacy Duane, Shawnee, Kan., Ronald, Kansas City, Mo., Carl (wife Page), Leawood, Kan., Frank (wife Anita), Shawnee, Kan., and Steven (wife Laura), St. Joseph, Mo.; five daughters, Sharon (husband Wally) Sims, Lawson, Mo., Arlene Joyce DeClements, Shawnee, Kan., Esther Lavonne (husband Ivan), Kansas City, Kan., Vivian DeClements, Olathe, Kan., and Carolyn (husband Charles), Kingsville, Mo. In addition, she leaves 36 grandchildren (plus 20 spouses), 67 great-grandchildren (plus four spouses), 22 great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and friends. The family is honored with the memory of her kind, welcoming smile, immense family devotion, memory and caring for other people, fighting spirit, unmatched compassion and unfaltering love. A celebration of her life will take place at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29, at Maple Hill Funeral Home 3300 Shawnee Dr., Kansas City, Kan. 66106. The family will receive friends at a visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28. She will be buried in Maple Hill Cemetery alongside her husband.
Larry A. Darnell
Larry Allen Darnell, 49, Richmond, Mo., died Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2008, at Shirkey Nursing and Rehabilitaton Center in Richmond, Mo. Mr. Darnell was born Jan. 16, 1959, in Lexington, the son of James Howard and Virginia Frances (Brokert) Darnell. Mr. Darnell had been self-employed as a painter. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Lexington. He was baptized on July 29, 2008. He was preceded in death by his parents and a nephew, James Wesley Darnell. Survivors include twin sons, David Darnell and Daniel Darnell, both of Baumholder, Germany; two brothers, Billy Darnell and Gary Darnell, both of Richmond; two nieces, Clarissa Darnell, Blue Springs, and Alysha Darnell, Richmond; and three nephews, Derek Darnell and Kyle James Darnell, both of Richmond, and Christopher Lopez, Blue Springs. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 18, at Polley Funeral Home in Richmond. Burial will be held in the Dover Cemetery in Dover. Joseph Dimino Jr.
Joseph Dimino, Jr., 64, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008. Mr. Dimino was born Sept. 24, 1943, in Brooklyn, N.Y. He called Liberty, Mo., home and raised his children there. He was a salesman. Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Susie Dimino; three children, JoAnn, Anthony, Joe and LuLu; one sister, Colleen Seviroli; and six grandchildren. The Funeral Mass was celebrated on Friday, Sept. 5, at St. James Catholic Church in Liberty. Interment was held in Glenridge Cemetery in Liberty. Arrangements are through D.W. Gabriella Duffett
Gabriella J. Duffett, 55 days, Richmond, Mo., died Friday, Aug. 29, 2008, at her home. Visitation was held from 4 to 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 1, at Richmond United Methodist Church, followed by services at 5 p.m. Burial in Lexington Memory Gardens. Harry Dugdale
Harry J. Dugdale, 67, Liberty, Mo., died Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2008, at Liberty Hospital. Mr. Dugdale was born Aug. 4, 1941, in Rapid City, S.D., the son of Harry Richard and Esther Lydia Smith Dugdale. He moved to Liberty in the 1950s. He was married to Gail Wally in August 1967. He worked at the Sun newspaper, and later retired as an agent for Prudential Insurance. He was also a founding member of Heritage Auction House in Liberty. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers. Survivors include his wife, Gail; two sons, Harry Joseph Dugdale, Liberty, and Joshua Jay Dugdale, Arlington, Texas; siblings, Beverly Hendricks and Rolland Lowe, both of Liberty, Harriett Klinetobe, South Dakota, Alice Martin, Colorado, and Esther Norman, Florida; and four grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 10, at Heritage Hall in Liberty; cremation, with private interment. *Betty Edmonds
Betty Jean (Van Pelt) Edmonds, 82, of Excelsior Springs, Mo., passed away Monday, Aug. 25, 2008, at Liberty Hospital in Liberty, Mo., after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Betty was born on April 14, 1926, in Ray County, Mo. She was the 11th of 14 children born to Charles and Zella Van Pelt. She attended rural grade schools and graduated from Polo High School in 1945. Betty met her future husband, Warren Edmonds, on a blind date. They were married on Aug. 20, 1949, and observed their 59th wedding anniversary this month. Betty and Warren made their first home together at Lake Waukomis, Platte County, Missouri, and were among a dozen "pioneer" families who endured dirt roads and hauling of water in the early 1950s. Betty and Warren raised three children: Kathy (Brad) Long of El Dorado, Kan.; Kent (Tracey) Edmonds of Lee1s Summit, Mo.; and Kurt Edmonds of Monument, Colo. Additionally, Betty and Warren lived in Colorado Springs, Colo., and Nixa, Mo., before settling in Excelsior Springs to be near her sisters. Betty was a wonderful homemaker, wife, and mother. She was a den mother for Cub Scouts and former member of the Platte Woods United Methodist Church. She was an excellent seamstress and made many beautiful garments. Betty was happiest when surrounded by her family. News traveled fast through the Van Pelt "hot line." In addition to her husband, children and their spouses, Betty leaves behind nine grandchildren: Kristen (Craig) Scribner, Barrett (Stacie) Long, Brooke Long, Jesse (Lauren) Edmonds, Elesha Edmonds, Luke Edmonds, Lauriel Edmonds, Nick Edmonds, and Jacob Edmonds; five great-grandchildren: Alexandra and Avery Scribner, Carter and Brenna Long, and Corbin Edmonds; five sisters: Waneta Hatfield, Virginia Mallory, Maude (Bill) Brown, Charlene (Kenneth) Hogan, and Billie (Clifford) Allen; two sisters-in-law: Bernice Van Pelt and Patty Van Pelt; one brother-in-law: John D. Patton; and many nieces and nephews. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Zella Van Pelt; one sister, Allene "Sissy" Patton; three brothers: Jack Van Pelt, Kenneth "Pete" Van Pelt, and Bobby Don Van Pelt; and four infant siblings. The family wishes to thank Drs. Buzard, Schreier, Slovick, and Chatkupt, and the nursing staff of Liberty Hospital. Betty will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her. Linda Eldridge
Linda Ann (Morgan) Eldridge, 49, Kearney, Mo., died Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2008. Mrs. Eldridge was born March 28, 1960, in North Kansas City, the daughter of George and Carol Ann Self-Morgan. She was married to Jim Eldridge on Nov. 3, 1990. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Kearney. She worked as a claims adjuster for Pyramid Life. She was preceded in death by her mother. Survivors include her husband, Jim, of the home; daughter, Emily Ann, of the home; son, Matthew David, of the home; her father and stepmother, George and Virginia Moran, Liberty; a brother, Rusty Morgan, Niantic, Conn.; her twin sister, Lisa Key, Trimble; stepsisters, Laura Lawler, Lydia Hurley, and Linda Anderson; and other relatives. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 25, at First Baptist Church in Kearney; burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Kearney. Beverly Ann Garnett, 68, Smithville, Mo., died Friday, Aug. 15, 2008, at North Kansas City Hospital. Ms. Garnett was born Sept. 9, 1939, in Kansas City, the daughter of James Carl and Juanita (Clevenger) Griffin. She was married to Thomas Garnett on Nov. 23, 1960. She was a member of First Christian Church in Smithville. She was preceded in death by her father, James Griffin. Survivors include her husband, Thomas Garnett, Texas; two daughters, Debra Cox and Lori Kerr, both of Smithville; her mother, Juanita Griffin, Excelsior Springs; sisters, Jeannie Johnson and Dana Peterman; brothers, Jim Griffin, Frank Griffin David Griffin, Eddie Griffin, Robert Griffin and John Griffin; and seven grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, at First Christian Church in Smithville; burial in IOOF Cemetery in Smithville. Donna Farrar
Donna K. Farrar, 56, Henrietta, Mo., died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2008, at her home. Ms. Farrar was born Jan. 12, 1952, in Wellington, the daughter of Paul Edward and Delores (Mullarkey) Jeude. She first was married to J.C. Murry in 1983; he preceded her in death in 1991. She later married Joe C. Farrar; he also preceded her in death. She had worked in the deli department in the Richmond Wal-Mart for the past three years. She was a Baptist. She had lived in Wellington and Lexington before moving to Richmond in 1989. In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by one brother, Chuckie Jeude. Survivors include two daughters, Glenda Clancy, Henrietta, and Michelle Garner, Lexington; five brothers, Joe Jeude, Wood Heights, Billy Jeude, Richmond, Delbert Walters, Kansas City, Clarence Jeude, Willis, Texas, and Willis Schafer, Odessa; three sisters, Margie Walters, Lexington, Alice Brown, Bates City, and Pauline Looney, Higginsville; one stepgrandchild; and three stepgreat-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond. Visitation will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29, at the funeral home. "J.D." Hahn
Joseph Dean "J.D." Hahn, 70, Cameron, Mo., died Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2008, after a lengthy battle with cancer. Mr. Hahn was born Jan. 14, 1938, the son of Sylvester "Sally" and Josephine (Lohman) Hahn. He was married to Meredith (Mason) Kedrovsky on Aug. 26, 1972. Survivors include his wife, Meredith, of the home; sister, JoAnn Luckenbill, Cameron; three daughters, Debby Willimetz, Excelsior Springs, Sandy Liley, Baton Rouge, La., and Cyndee Gardner, Cameron; two sons, Karl Kedrovsky, Overland Park, Kan., and Greg Kedrovsky, San Jose, Costa Rica; 11 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 18, at Poland-Thompson Chapel in Cameron. Visitation was held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 17, at the funeral home. Burial was in Graceland Memorial Cemetery in Cameron. Memorial contributions may be made to the Tree House at Liberty Hospital or the Caldwell County Cancer Foundation. Lois Oswald Lois Maxine Webber Oswald, 69, Polo, died Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008, at her home. Ms. Oswald was born Jan. 8, 1939, in Plattsburg, the daughter of E. Rex and Martha (Fisher) Webber. She was married to Kenneth T. Oswald in March 1958; he died in February 1996. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers; one sister; and a granddaughter, Carol Ann Moore. Survivors include her sons, Terry, Parkville, Kenneth Wade, Lathrop, and Jeff, Excelsior Springs; daughters, Lois Darnell, Polo, and Sherry Kelley, Lee's Summit; four sisters, Nellie Wirtz, Polo, Wanda Howard, Shingle Springs, Calif., Midge Dennis, Turney, and Joyce McCown, Cameron; one brother, Edward R. "Eddie" Webber, Bend, Ore.; 15 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. The family received friends from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, at Bailey & Cox Funeral Home in Polo. There was also a visitation at noon Sunday, Aug. 17, in Creston, Iowa. Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Graceland Cemetery in Creston, Iowa, with burial following.
Sammy Hatheway
Sammy Kay Hatheway, 56, died Friday, Aug. 8, 2008. Mr. Hatheway was born June 2, 1952, in Stanberry, Mo., the son of Samuel Weber Hatheway Jr. and Lena Faye Waldorn Hatheway. He had worked as a mechanical engineer and was the operator of the Kearney, Mo., water plant. Survivors include his son, Samuel Hatheway; stepdaughter, Elizabeth Brigman; wife, Deborah Hatheway; and three grandchildren. Memorial services, arranged through Cremation Society of Kansas and Missouri, will be held at a later date. Cremation. Tarrie Haworth
Tarrie Ranae Haworth, 53, formerly of Canton, Kan., died Friday, Aug. 1, 2008, at her home in Platte City, Mo. Ms. Haworth was born April 12, 1955, in Wellington, the daughter of Lloyd E. and Jacolin L. (Dillon) Haworth. She was a barber. Survivors include her son, Christian D. Tanner, Dearborn, Mo.; her parents, Lloyd and Jacolin Haworth, Canton, Kan.; one brother, William Haworth, Ottawa, Kan.; one sister, Georgia Lee Haworth, Wichita, Kan.; and four grandchildren. Funeral services were scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 4, at First Baptist Church in Canton, Kan.; interment in Canton Township Cemetery. There was a private family visitation. Lester Gayle Howard, 87, Richmond, Mo., died Friday, Aug. 29, 2008. Betty Lou Hudlemeyer, 78, Orrick, Mo., died Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2008, at North Kansas City Hospital in North Kansas City, Mo. Ms. Hudlemeyer was born March 30, 1930, in Macon County, the daughter of Silsby Andrew and Nellie Geraldine (Good) Aldrich. She was married to Harold Eugene Hudlemeyer on July 29, 1951; he preceded her in death in 1996. She had worked as a beautician for several years. She had also been previously employed at Lake City Arsenal. Later she was a homemaker. She was a member of Union Baptist Church near Orrick. In addition to her husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Lloyd Aldrich and Andrew Aldrich, Jr. Survivors include three children, Larry Hudlemeyer, Rapid City, S.D., Gary Hudlemeyer, Kansas City, and Cathy Jones, Richmond; three sisters, Geraldine Davis, Excelsior Springs, Mary Brown, Mound Valley, Kan., and Bonnie Day, Higbee; one brother, Billy Joe Aldrich, Springfield; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, at Union Baptist Church near Orrick; burial will follow in the Union Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs.

Beulah Jones
Beulah E. Jones, 92, Kearney, Mo., died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2008. Ms. Jones was born Nov. 2, 1915, in Quapaw, Okla., the daughter of Solman and Lottie Mae Hall Logenbaugh. She moved to the Kansas City area in 1932. That same year, on Feb. 2, she was married to Lawrence W. Jones. They farmed near Paradise, then in 1972 moved to a new farm in Knoxville. Lawrence preceded her in death in 1978, but she continued to live on and operate the farm until 2000, when she moved to Kearney. For 35 years she operated a home-grown produce booth at the City Market in Kansas City. She also spent time as a sales clerk in several ventures, including real estate and furniture. In addition to her husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter, three grandsons, three brothers, and one sister. Survivors include four daughters, Joyce McCrery, Excelsior Springs, Carol Taylor, Pleasant Valley, Judy Fry, Kearney, and Linda Gannaway, Eagle Rock; 18 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and 41 great-great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 29, at Fry-Bross & Spidle Chapel in Kearney; burial in IOOF Cemetery in Smithville. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral chapel. *Fred Kleinbeck
Fred Kleinbeck of rural Neodesha, Kan., died Aug. 13, 2008. The son of Richard and Mildred (Sharp) Kleinbeck, he was born July 22, 1935, at his grandparents' home in Excelsior Springs, Mo. He grew up in Excelsior Springs and joined the Missouri National Guard in 1952. He graduated from Excelsior Springs High School in 1953 as an all-state football athlete earning a scholarship to the University of Missouri. He married Shirley Van Pelt in December 1957, and from that union one boy and two girls were born. They divorced in 1964. He entered active duty in the U.S. Army in 1958 and attended medical technology, field artillery, guided missile and counterintelligence service schools. His military career included overseas tours in Okinawa, Korea and Vietnam. He met Susan V.M. Kleinbeck, an Army nurse, in San Francisco and they were married in Derby, Kan., on May 8, 1966. He retired from military service after 22 years in January 1978 and built an earth-sheltered home in Sycamore Valley. He and his wife raised calves and sold hay there for more than 20 years. He was Past Master of Ann Arbor Masonic Lodge #544 in 1976; Secretary-Treasurer of the Sycamore Cemetery Association #10 for 28 years; Elder at the First Presbyterian Church, Independence, Kan.; Trustee of the now-closed Sycamore Valley Methodist Church; life member of Veterans of Foreign Wards Post #1186, Independence, Kan.; life member of the Retired Officers Association; and member of Wichita Masonic Scottish Rite. As president of his high school graduating class, he supported and enjoyed several reunion gatherings in Florida, Branson and Excelsior Springs. At age 60 he started playing the game of golf, and he enjoyed it often. He never understood why the low score, rather than the high score, was the objective as in all other sports. Had that been the case, he would have been a great golfer. Survivors include his wife, Susan, and his son, Michael, of the home; daughter, Michelle Holt, North Kansas City, Mo.; daughter, Denise Schieb, Kansas City, Mo.; sister, Diane Lievsay, Mount Airey, N.C.; stepsister, Evelyn Wheelus, Beaumont, Texas; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service has been planned for 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22, at the First Presbyterian Church, Independence, Kan. Interment at the Farm Ridge Cemetery will occur at a later date. Cremation was under the direction of Penwell-Gabel Webb & Rodrick Chapel. He requested that no flowers be sent. Della Mae Lakey, 90, Kansas City, Mo., died Friday, Aug. 15, 2008. Ms. Lakey was born in Randolph, and was a lifelong area resident. She was employed by the Kansas City Credit Bureau and retired in 1987 after 27 years of continuous service. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, two sons, one brother, and four sisters. Survivors include one daughter, Sandra Haines, Excelsior Springs; one brother, Riley Brown, Claycomo; one sister, Clara Mize, Bonner Springs, Kan.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Earl "Gene" McCrary, 81, Excelsior Springs, Mo., passed away Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2008, at his home. Gene was born on July 2, 1927, in Hamilton, Mo., the son of Henry Irvin and Mabel E. (Barnhill) McCrary. He served in the U.S. Army in 1945, where he was a boxer. He worked for General Motors, retiring after over 30 years of employment. He loved music and playing his guitar and singing. He also rode and trained horses. He was always willing to help other people. Survivors include his wife Carolyn (Tackett) McCrary, of the home; children, Ronald Gene, Carrier, Miss., Connie Murray, Excelsior Springs, Stephanie Perry and husband, Doug, Kearney, Charles Whitham and wife, Mayumi, Torrance, Calif., and James Whitham, of the home; grandchildren, Stacey Mandle and husband, Kurt, Lawson, Sunday Alexander and husband, Dearle, Lathrop, Ray Armstrong and wife, Carol, Cameron, Kyle Kistner, Kearney, Kevin Whitham, Torrance, Calif., Christina Whitham, Torrance, Calif., and Michael Monroe Whitham, Bethany; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Besides his parents, Gene was preceded in death by siblings, Floyd, Neil, Lester, Don, Helen, Leona and Frances; and one grandchild, Kaleb Kistner. Hannah McMullen
Hannah Marie Casey McMullen, infant daughter of Erin McMullen, died Friday, Aug. 15, 2008, at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Mo. Hannah was born March 28, 2008, in Cameron, and fought for her life for four months and 18 days as a result of a heart condition. In addition to her mother, survivors include a half-sister, Terri McMullen, Cameron; her maternal grandparents, Meg Rost and Ernest Rost, Cameron; aunt and uncle, Beth and Tim Viers; and cousins, Grave and Tiana Viers. Services were held at noon Saturday, Aug. 23, at Cameron Harvester Church; burial in Graceland Cemetery in Cameron. Kelli Marie Mellon, 21, of Lawson, Mo., passed away Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008, near Ponca City, Okla. She was currently a senior at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Okla. Kathleen Maureen (Hill) Pelis, 74, Rayville, Mo., died Saturday, Aug. 2, 2008, at Shirkey Nursing and Rehab Center in Richmond, Mo. Mrs. Pelis was born Jan. 2, 1934, in Ross-On-Wye, England, United Kingdom. She was married to Sheldon Pelis on Dec. 31, 1960; he preceded her in death on Jan. 8, 2005. She had been a nanny in a children1s hospital when she lived in England. At the age of 26 she came to America. Following her marriage, she and her husband lived in Washington and California before moving to Missouri in 1998 to be closer to their family. She had worked as a Director of the Salvation Army Daycare. In addition to her husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Bernard Hill. Survivors include four children, David Hill, Oxford, England, UK, James Pelis, Rayville, Laura Lee Bell, Olympia, Wash., and Maureen Butter, Bates City; 14 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. A graveside committal service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, at the Missouri State Veteran1s Cemetery in Higginsville. There will be no visitation. Roberta F. Pendleton, 92, Lathrop, Mo., died Friday, Aug. 8, 2008, at her home. Mrs. Pendleton was born June 30, 1916, in Stotesberry, and lived most of her life in Lathrop. She was married to Thomas "Allen" Pendleton on Jan. 1, 1950. She was a homemaker and a member of Holt United Methodist Church in Holt. In addition to her parents, Adylette and Etta (Wilson) Nall, she was preceded in death by one brother, Rex Nall. Survivors include her daughter, LeaEtta Davidson, Lathrop; her son, Tom Pendleton, Lathrop; one brother, Bob Nall, Excelsior Springs; one sister, Wilma Pierce, Lydon, Kan.; seven grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. Phyllis Jean Post, 76, of Excelsior Springs, Mo., passed away Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2008, at her home. Born Nov. 27, 1931, in Carrollton, Mo., she was the daughter of Samuel H. and Ethyl B. (Hawkins) Wright. On Feb. 4, 1955, she was married to Eugene C. Post, her husband of 53 years before he preceded her in death May 14, 2008. She was also preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Dale Wright, Herbert Wright, Jay Wright and Harold Wright; and two sisters, Dorothy Moore and Ruth Wilson. Surviving are her son, Calvin Lee Post and wife, Tara, Kansas City; her daughter, Lisa Jean Martinez and husband, Arturo, Rayville; and eight grandchildren, Josh, Jason and Brandon Post, Brianna Blackmon and Natasha, Vanessa, Antonio and Jason Martinez. Mrs. Post was raised in Carrollton, where she received her education and graduated from Carrollton High School. She lived in Kansas City for a brief time and then in Independence for 16 years before moving to Excelsior Springs in 1977. She had been employed at Sears and also Gene and Calvin's Muffler Shop, and was a homemaker. Phyllis attended the Salem Christian Union Church where she was active on the prayer line. The most important things in her life were her family and her church family. She especially loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 24, at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. Visitation will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Burial in Hillcrest Cemetery. Calvin W Roy, 80, Vincennes, Ind., died Monday, Aug. 4, 2008. Mr. Roy was born March 18, 1928, in Lawrence City, Ill., the son of William W. and Effie P. (Rose) Roy. He was married to Norma Jean on Jan. 8, 1949, and they enjoyed each other's company for 50-plus years. He retired from Ford Motor Company. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife; one daughter; one sister; and three brothers. Linda Lou Sparks, 65, Independence, Mo., died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2008, at Centerpoint Medical Center in Independence. Ms. Sparks was born May 4, 1943, in Ottumwa, Iowa, the daughter of Earl Hershel and Marietta Ione (Garfield) Simmers. She had been employed as a hairdresser most of her life. Margery Loretta Stolte, 90, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Friday, Aug. 29, 2008. Mrs. Stolte was born in Kansas City, and lived in Kansas City and Liberty most of her life until she retired to the Lake Pomme de Terre area. She returned to the Kansas City area in 2000. She worked for several years for Wilson Sporting Goods. Survivors include her husband of 70 years, Henry Stolte; five children, Loretta Johnson, Virginia Richmond, Melvin Stolte, Brenda Jennings and Patricia Clevenger; 10 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren. Thomas Dean Watkins, 56, died Friday, Aug. 15, 2008, at his home. Mr. Watkins was born Jan. 31, 1952, in Brownfield, Texas, the third of five sons of Madge Alice Watkins and Hurshel C. Watkins. Tom is the third son of five boys. As a young man, he served his country in the Army. He met his wife, Gloria, in Lubbock, Texas, in 1992 and moved to Georgeville, Mo., in 1998 to be close to his parents. He was preceded in death by one grandson, Jeremy Beaird, in January 1992; and his mother, M. Alice Watkins, in December 2003. Survivors include his wife, Gloria Watkins, of the home; (grand)son, Bryan J. Watkins, also of the home; father, Hurshel C. Watkins, Georgeville; brothers, Hurshel D. Watkins, Cowgill, James W. Watkins, Excelsior Springs, Dan C. Watkins, Richmond, and Brian C. Watkins, Excelsior Springs; sons, Thomas D. Watkins Jr., Independence, and James C. Ms. Wright was born April 5, 1921, near Mill Grove in Mercer County, Mo., the daughter of Taylor and Audrey Estella (Shockey) Schooler. She was married to Victor Kenneth Wright on Sept. 3, 1939. She was a member of Woods Memorial Christian Church in Excelsior Springs. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Victor Wright, on April 18, 1994; a son, John Taylor Wright, on May 16, 2007; and a brother, Henry Schooler. Survivors include a sister, Anna Belle Good, Trenton; a son, Kenneth Richard Wright, Liberty; a daughter, Linda LaSala, Excelsior Springs; a daughter-in-law, Vicki Wright, Excelsior Springs; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Mabel Chrystine (Coats) Yoakum, 77, Ray County, Mo., passed away August 24, 2008, at Shirkey Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Richmond, Mo. Mabel ("Nanny") was born Dec. 18, 1930, to Roy & Ethel (Beam) Coats. She was married March 3, 1949, to James Daniel Yoakum of Ray County, Mo. Mabel is preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Ethel; husband, Jim; brothers, Floyd and Albert Dean; and sisters, Gladys Nadine and Selma Juanita O'Dell. Survivors include her daughter, Vicki Thompson, who loved and cared for her day in and day out, and son-in-law Terry, Richmond, Mo.; daughter, Karen; son, Larry; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brother, Leonard Allen of Glendale, Ariz.; and sisters, Naomi Thomas, Richmond, Mo., and L'Berta Shelton, Pinehurst, N.C. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Aug. 27, at the Polley Funeral Home in Richmond, Mo. The funeral service will immediately follow the visitation. Burial will be at the New Hope Cemetery in Millville, Mo.
