Virginia Burney
Virginia E. Burney, 91, Independence, Mo., died Monday, July 13, 2009, at the Villages of Jackson Creek in Independence. Mrs. Burney was born Aug. 5, 1917, in Hardin, the daughter of William and Laura (Nichols) Eslinger. She was married to Robert Burney; he preceded her in death. She was an office manager for Connecticut General. She moved to the Kansas City area in 1946. She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Independence. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, R.W. Eslinger and Sterling Eslinger; and one sister, Hanna Holsinger. Survivors include a brother, Shelby Eslinger, Richmond; and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 15, at the Hardin Cemetery in Hardin. Arrangements are through Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond.

Bruce Covey
Bruce Ray Covey, 45, Wood Heights, Mo. (formerly of Lexington, Mo., and Camdenton, Mo.), died Friday, July 3, 2009. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 6, at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond; burial in Hardin Cemetery in Hardin. Visitation was held during the hour before the service at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Friendless in Lexington.

Caleb Creason
Caleb Aaron Creason, 26, Orrick, Mo., died Thursday, July 23, 2009, near Orrick. Mr. Creason was born Nov. 17, 1982, in Kansas City. He was a 2001 graduate of Orrick High School. He enjoyed bowling and playing golf and was in numerous bowling leagues. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Warren E. and Betty Jo Cousin and Robert Creason. Survivors include his father, Joseph Creason and wife, Jennifer, Excelsior Springs, and Starla Reffitt, Orrick; one brother, Joshua Creason, Excelsior Springs; one sister, Gracie Creason, Excelsior Springs; and his grandmother, Mae Dean Creason, Excelsior Springs. Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 28, at Crescent Lake Christian Center. The Family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Cremation, with inurnment at a later date by the family. Arrangements are through Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. Memorial contributions may be made to the Southpoint Cemetery Association.

“Ed Bud” Davis
Edward Lee “Ed Bud” Davis, 49, Independence, Mo., died Thursday, July 16, 2009. Mr. Davis started his mechanic’s career at JB Auto Parts before working for Consolidate Freight and, later, Yellow Freight. He was preceded in death by his brother, Garry Ray Davis. Survivors include three daughters, Sarah Davis, Hannah Davis and Katherine Davis, all of Oak Grove; his parents, Carl and Glennie Davis, Independence; two brothers, Gene Davis, Orrick, and Larry Davis, Independence; three sisters, Sheryl Steuck, Blue Springs, and Cathy Davis and Gail Collins, both of Independence; and his companion, Cheryl Garrett, Independence. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 20, at Charter Funerals in Kansas City, where visitation began at noon Monday. Burial in Mound Grove Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to his children.

Donald Drew
Donald L. Drew, 70, Cameron, Mo., died Thursday, July 23, 2009, at his home. Mr. Drew was born Aug. 3, 1938, in Lawson, the son of Emma Lee (Cheek) and Clarence Leon Drew Sr. He worked as a communication technician for N.W. Electric Power Co. for 30 years before retiring. He was a member of First Christian Church in Cameron. He was preceded in death by his father. Survivors include one son, Pat Drew, Lee’s Summit; one daughter, Stacy Rieber, Iowa Falls, Iowa; his mother, Emma Lee Drew, Lawson; four brothers, Richard Drew, Kansas City, Leon Drew, Las Vegas, Nev., Gerry Drew, Holt, and James Drew, Mableville, Ark.; one sister, Patricia Atkins, Smithville; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 25, at First Christian Church in Cameron. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 24, at the church; burial in Lawson Cemetery. Arrangements are through Poland-Thompson Funeral Home in Cameron. Marcella Dye
Marcella Ann Dye, 74, died Thursday, July 9, 2009, at her home. Ms. Dye was born Aug. 17, 1934, in Hardin, Mo., the daughter of Frank William and Pauline B. (Blaker) Weber. In addition to her parents, she was preceded her in death by one sister, Lena Ruth Lutz; one brother, Ben Weber; one son, Danny Jeffers; and two daughters, Luanne Dye and Sandy Jackson. Survivors include Carl Clifford Weber, Polo; Jerald Dean Hayes, Ackworth, Iowa; Joyce Weber, Richmond; Clifton Jeffers and Travis Jeffers, both of the home; daughter, Paula Rodgers, Richmond; William Kent Jeffers and Timothy Dye, both of Richmond; Ricky Jeffers, Excelsior Springs; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, July 13, at the Henrietta Baptist Church in Henrietta, Mo. Visitation was held from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, July 12, at Polley Funeral Home in Richmond. Carroll Engleman
Carroll C. Engleman, 85, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Wednesday, July 1, 2009, at Liberty Hospital in Liberty, Mo. Mr. Engleman was born Jan. 9, 1924, in Shulls, Ind., the son of Clayborn Carroll Engleman and Bessie (Allstott) Engleman. He was self employed in sales, mainly for transportation. He was married to Mary (Kanihan) Engleman. He and his wife, Mary, were active members in the Church of the Nazarene in Excelsior Springs. Survivors include his wife, Mary, of the home; one son, Clay Engleman, Kansas City; one daughter, Enid Hudgins, Sacramento, Calif.; one brother, Paul "Pete" Engleman, Indianapolis, Ind.; one sister, Ruth Frasier, Maine; and five grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 7, at the Church of the Nazarene in Excelsior Springs. Arrangements are through Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs.

Genevieve Foley, 83, Gladstone, Mo., died Monday, July 27, 2009. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, at New Hope Cemetery in Liberty. Visitation will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, July 31, at Charter Funerals in Gladstone. Memorial contributions may be made to Good Shepherd Hospice.

SGM Joseph Gates
Sergeant Major Joseph Henry Walter Gates, 68, died Sunday, July 12, 2009. SGM Gates was born April 13, 1941, the son of James and Anna Lebedz Gates of Syracuse, N.Y. He served in the United States Marine Corps from May 1960 until he retired in May 1981. He was married to Juanita P. Snyder on May 11, 1982, and they moved to the Northland area of Kansas City, Mo. He served as facility supervisor of KCATA Metro Bus Terminal in downtown Kansas City for 24 years, and also was a courier for Via Bancourier Inc. for 12 years and assistant manager of the Enlisted Club at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., for seven years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one grandson, Joseph Reed Handley. Survivors include his wife, Juanita P. Gates; a sister, Marcella Anderson, Beach Lake, Pa., and twin Joan McIntyre, Manasquan, N.J.; sons, Sgt. 1st Class Joseph H. Gates Jr., Fort Gordon, Ga., Steven Wayne Gates, Anthony Lee Gates and Bryan Lyn Gates, all of Beaufort, S.C., and J.W.A. Mather, Kansas City; daughters, Paullette D. Kiff, Parkville, Muree Lynn Handley, Kearney, Mickee Ritchie, Gardner, Kan., and Vickie Rae Hickerson, Fulton; 20 grandchildren; and one great-grandson. Funeral services were set for 1 p.m. Friday, July 17, at Hope Fellowship Baptist Church in Kansas City; burial in Hampton Cemetery in Kansas City. Visitation was held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 16, at White Chapel Funeral Home in Gladstone.

Lawrence Gilpin
Lawrence Wayne Gilpin, 80, Holt, Mo., died Saturday, July 18, 2009, at Liberty Hospital in Liberty, Mo. Mr. Gilpin was born Nov. 24, 1928, in Buffalo, Mo. He spent much of his life in Waverly. He held various jobs, with the primary occupation of carpenter, bricklayer and construction superintendent. He was preceded in death by his wife, Zelma Mae (Taylor) Gilpin. Survivors include three sons, Larry L. Gilpin, Chillicothe, Douglas W. Gilpin, Holt, and Terry Gilpin, Omaha, Neb.; three grandchildren; and other relatives. Visitation will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2, at First Christian Church in Kearney. A memorial service will follow at 3 p.m. Sunday. Willa Gregory
Willa Dean (Happy) Gregory, 80, Lee’s Summit, Mo., died Sunday, July 26, 2009, at Wilshire at Lakewood. Survivors include two sisters, Ruth Phillips, Independence, and Judy Sparks, Liberty; sons, Larry Boyer, Wichita, Kan., and Dwayne Boyer and Dr. Reuel Gregory, both of Kansas City; daughters, Lynette Boyer-Fry, St. Petersburg, Fla., and Dawnalie Hamman and Ellen Wehmeyer, both of Lee’s Summit; 11 grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren. *Brenda Sue Griffing
Brenda Sue Griffing, 66, of Wood Heights, Mo., died Sunday, July 12, 2009, at her home. Brenda was born on Jan. 12, 1943, in Dutton, Ala., to Floyd and Audie Medlock. She married David A. Griffing of Ray County, Mo., on May 24, 1961; he survives of the home. Other survivors include two sons, Michael D. Griffing and Keith Griffing, both of Excelsior Springs, Mo.; one daughter and son-in-law, Mary Kay and Jeff Davolt of Gladstone, Mo.; two brothers and one sister-in-law, James Medlock of Fort Worth, Texas, and Doyle and Margaret Medlock of Kansas City, Mo.; one sister, Christine Chavez of Fort Worth, Texas; and six grandchildren, Ian Davolt, Megan Davolt, Malanie Davolt, Mackenzie Griffing, Samantha Griffing and LaQuisha Griffing. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, William Alan Griffing; two brothers, Floyd Medlock Jr. and Wayne Medlock; and one sister, Wilma Brewer. Brenda lived in Wood Heights for most of her life. She was a member of Rock Falls Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 16, at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond, Mo. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Richmond Memory Gardens in Richmond, Mo. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ray County Salvation Army.


Janice Haight
Janice Rae Haight, 72, Carrollton, Mo., died Friday, July 10, 2009, at the University of Missouri Medical Center in Columbia, Mo. Ms. Haight was born Dec. 28, 1936, in Ainsworth, Neb., the daughter of Leonard J. and Hazel Ester (Wheeler) Staal. She was married to Clarence Albert Haight on May 7, 1956; he preceded her in death. She worked for many years as a nurse's aide. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Gary Haight; and one brother, Bud Staal. Survivors include two sons, Danny Haight, Excelsior Springs, and Kevin Haight, Columbia; three daughters, Vicki Munson, Carrollton, Alberta Haight, Sedalia, and Carolyn Haight, Carrollton; three sisters, Donna Ferneu, Margie Edwards and Darlene Hall, all of Ainsworth, Neb.; 11 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 14, at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. Burial in Crown Hill Cemetery in Excelsior Springs. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services on Tuesday, from 10-11 a.m., at the funeral home.


*Colleen Haines
Colleen Haines, a loving and devoted mother and wife, lost her long term battle with cancer on Thursday, July 23, 2009. She is survived by her loving husband, Edward “Larry” Haines, and her three children, Ashley Brunts of Kansas City, Mo., Eric Curran-Crawford of Excelsior Springs, Mo., and Jane Bowen, also of Excelsior Springs, Mo. She is also survived by her beautiful grandson, Bruce Oskar Bowen, who kept her spirit alive for many months more than any of us expected. She was very talented at everything she put her mind to, and touched the lives of many. We are all very grateful for the time that we shared with her before she went home to the Lord. Her celebration of life will be held at the Wabash BBQ in Excelsior Springs, Mo., on Sunday, Aug. 2, from 6 to 10 p.m. Arrangements are through Bross & Spidle Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations for the Excelsior Springs, Mo., Hospice facility, who took amazing care of her during her final days.

Steven Hampton
Steven Maurice Hampton, 55, Aldrich, Mo., died Sunday, July 5, 2009, at the New Haven Care Center in Odessa, Mo. Mr. Hampton was born Sept. 1, 1953, in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Donald Maurice and Phyllis Ann (McFadden) Hampton. Steven was a graduate of Excelsior Springs High School with the Class of 1971. He worked as a truck driver for various employers. He was working for T&M Stone Quarries in Aldrich at the time his health failed. He was a member of Pisgah Baptist Church near Excelsior Springs. In addition to his grandparents, he was preceded in death by his father, Donald Hampton, on May 8, 2004. Survivors include his mother, Phyllis Hampton, Excelsior Springs; one daughter, Kim Wetzel, Excelsior Springs; four sisters, Cate Hampton, Excelsior Springs, Donita Spurgeon, Jacksonville, Texas, Carole Thorn, Liberty, and Sherri Chandra, Lexington; one brother, Keith Hampton, Santa Rosa, Calif.; and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 8, at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. Burial with military honors will be in Pisgah Cemetery, near Excelsior Springs. Visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Pisgah Baptist Church.

Jack Hill, 71, Richmond, MO., died Monday, July 27, 2009. Funeral services were set for 10 a.m. Friday, July 31, at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond; burial in Sunny Slope Cemetery in Richmond. Visitation was held from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 30, at the funeral home.

Jimmie Hines
Jimmie Hines, 77, Lexington, Mo., died Sunday, July 5, 2009. Mr. Hines was preceded in death by Linda Lois Hines. Survivors include his daughter, Vickie Johnson, Richmond; son, Allen Hines, Orrick; two grandchildren; and one great-grandson. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 9, at Mt. Washington Forever Chapel Mausoleum in Independence. Visitation was held prior to the service.

Waymon Hollis
Waymon Matthew Hollis, 84, Lawson, Mo., died Sunday, July 5, 2009, at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cameron, Mo. Mr. Hollis was born Feb. 6, 1925, in Thayer, the son of Alvin Matthew and El Meita (Honeycutt) Hollis. He was married to Raymonda Jean Blackburn on Jan. 8, 1951; she survives, of the home. He worked for General Motors for 31 years, retiring in 1982. He was a member of the Church of Christ in Liberty. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Lisa Gay McKee-Hollis; a granddaughter, Amber Dawn McKee-Hollis; and several brothers and sisters. In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Mark Hollis, Excelsior Springs, and Matthew Hollis of Scappoose, Ore.; five grandchildren; and many in his extended family. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 9, at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Liberty, with full military honors. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 8, at the funeral home.

Louise Howell
Louise Howell, 89, Independence, Mo., died Wednesday, July 29, 2009, at her home. Ms. Howell was born Aug. 1, 1919, in Cameron, the daughter of Luther and Emma (Mauzey) Payne. She was part-owner with her husband, Jack Howell, of Burton Howell Floor Covering from 1967 to 1976. She was a member of Restoration Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jack L. Powell; and her brother, Carl Payne. Survivors include her children, Jacquelyn Howell, Buckner, Marilyn Danko, Hughesville, and Woodrow Howell, Richmond; two sisters, Neatha Robinson, Richmond, and Gayle Suydam, Independence; three grandsons; and two great-grandsons. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 3, at at Speaks Suburban Chapel in Independence; burial in Mound Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Restoration Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, P.O. Geneva Hufft
Geneva Agnes (Armes) Hufft, 81, Waverly, Mo., died Tuesday, July 21, 2009, at the Lafayette Regional Hospital in Lexington, Mo. Ms. Hufft was born Jan. 26, 1928, in Bloomfield, the daughter of George Alva and Agnes Mary (Atherton) Armes. She was valedictorian of the class of 1946 at Bloomfield High School. She had worked at McCleary’s Clinic in Excelsior Springs and Goodwill in Kansas City. She was of the Baptist faith and held a church membership wherever she lived until her health prevented her from doing so. She had resided at the Appleridge Care Center in Waverly for the past several months. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carlton Hufft, in 1966; five brothers, George Armes, Leon Armes, Albert Armes, Harold Armes and Theodore Armes; and one sister, Alice Wagner. Survivors include five children, John Evans Jr., Kansas City, Marilyn Evans, Kansas City, Kan., George Evans, Independence, Tom C. Hufft, Lexington, and William Poston, of Phoenix, Ariz.; two sisters, Laura Almond, Lennon, Mich., and Mary Williams, Lathrop; two brothers, Robert Arme, Milan, and Dewey Armes, Warrensburg; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Graveside services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday, July 24, at the Lawson Cemetery in Lawson. There is no public visitation planned. Arrangements are through Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. Memorial contributions may be made to the residents’ activity fund at Appleridge Care Center, P.O. Box 188, Waverly, MO 64096.

Mary Ann Hydeman
Mary Ann Hydeman, 79, Plattsburg, Mo., died Wednesday, July 1, 2009. Mrs. Hydeman was born July 21, 1929, in Springfield, and lived most of her life in Plattsburg. She was a nurse. In addition to her parents, Benjamin and Beulah (Sadler) Knierim, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Hydeman Jr.; and her son, Billy Hydeman. Survivors include her daughters, Susan Routh, Stewartsville, and Kim Mick, Plattsburg; four siblings; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Visitation and services were set for 10 and 11 a.m. Friday, July 3, at Bailey & Cox Family Funeral Service in Plattsburg; interment in Green Lawn Cemetery in Plattsburg.

James Donald “Don” Jackson, 87, Richmond, Mo., died Saturday, July 25, 2009. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 29, at the UnitedMethodist Church in Richmond. Visitation will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 28, at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond. Private family inurnment in Richmond Memory Gardens.

Esther Jackson
Eshter A. Jackson, 69, Knoxville, MO., died Saturday, July 11, 2009. Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 14, at the Cowgill Cemetery in Cowgill. Visitation was held from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond. Memorial contributions may be made to Henrietta Baptist Church or the Ray County Humane Society.

1960-2009
Ferlin Randall “Randy,” Johnson, 49, died at home in Kansas City, Mo., on July 17, 2009. Randy was born in Fayette, Mo., on Jan. 27, 1960. Being the child of a United Methodist minister, he had many homes growing up. As a young boy he lived in Gilliam and later Smith Chapel near Marshall. He attended elementary school in Maysville, Mo. In 1971 he moved with his family to Pleasant Hill and he became a devoted athlete during his junior high and senior high school years helping the football Roosters compete for playoff and state titles games. He also was active in his church’s United Methodist Youth Fellowship and traveled to distant towns in Missouri and Arkansas on mission “work camp” trips. While in high school he was employed by the Pleasant Hill Times and other businesses as he formed a custodial business. In May of 1971, Randy’s senior year, he was confronted with a difficult decision at the end of his junior year, whether to move with his family to Excelsior Springs, where his father was appointed pastor, or stay in Pleasant Hill. The coach in Excelsior lured him there and he became a “star” running back for the Tigers and was selected as a participant in the Big Brothers and Sisters All Star game at the end of the season. In preparation for that game he was injured and was not able to fulfill his scholarship to William Jewell College, but he attended college there and graduated with a degree in business. He made his home in the Northland area and was married and was blessed with one daughter, Rachel, of Kansas City, who survives him. For several years he worked at the Forrest T. Jones firm in Kansas City and then was recruited by Yellow Freight (YRC) and trained as a telecommunications specialist. He remained a Yellow Technology’s employee until ill health ended his employment. Randy loved all sports, but he was a devoted Chiefs fan and for many years had season tickets. He was also devoted to his son’s sports and became a booster for the Northland Chargers, of which his son Travis was a teammate. On Oct. 8, 1994, Randy married Shirley Moore of Grandview and they were blessed with one son, Travis. In addition to Shirley and Travis, of the home, he is survived by his parents, the Rev. Harold and Karen Johnson, Lee’s Summit; his sister, Kerrie (Mrs. Allen) Amos, Lee’s Summit; and his sister, Mindie (Mrs. Michael) Thomas, Kansas City; along with his five nephews and two nieces. Mary Jane Joiner, 83, Orrick, Mo. (formerly of Kansas City, Mo.), died Thursday, July 2, 2009, at the Northland Long Term Acute Care Hospital in Kansas City. Ms. Joiner was born May 5, 1927, in Roseland, Fla., the daughter of Willie and Madge (Dills) Patton. She was a homemaker. She was married to Elmer Lee Joiner Jr., and lived in Kansas City until his death on April 7, 2008. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson, James Stevens, on June 21, 2008; and three brothers, Allen Patton, John Patton and Tommy Patton. Survivors include her children, Paul Tipton, Richlands, N.C., Harry Tipton, Roseland, Fla., Terri Honn, Independence, and Vickie Wright, Orrick; a sister, Ann Agent, California; four brothers, Harry Patton, Bert Patton, Troy Patton and Melvin Patton, all of Florida; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. John Kessinger III
John Thomas Kessinger III, 63, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Friday, July 3, 2009. Mr. Kessinger was born Dec. 14, 1945, in Long Beach, Calif. He was a custom paint designer/painter of motorcycles, vans and autos starting in the early 1970s. He started Jhon’s Custom Paints and continued in this line of work for more than 37 years. Survivors include his wife, Karen; his father, John Thomas Kessinger II; his mother, Ruth Carpenter; his son, John Thomas Kessinger IV; two half-brothers; and a half-sister. Roger Kessler
Glen Roger Kessler, 78, Lawson, Mo., died Thursday, July 23, 2009, at his home. Mr. Kessler was born Aug. 21, 1930, in Easton, the son of Henry Edward and Alice (Weidmaier) Kessler. He was married to Bernice Caroline Starken on April 12, 1958; she survives of the home. He had worked for Skelly Oil, Vigortone Feed Company and as credit manager of the retail credit association of Kansas City. He was last employed by Dry Basement in Kansas City as an estimator. He was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church. In addition to his wife, survivors include five sons, Glenn Kessler, Kansas City, Doug Kessler, Eric Kessler and Corey Kessler, all of Lawson, and Mike Kessler, Polo; three brothers, Curtis Kessler, Savannah, Dwight Kessler, Leavenworth, Kan., and Earl Kessler, St. Joseph; three sisters, Shirley Hitchcock, St. Peters, Carol Staelens, Lexington, Ga., and Lois Taczala, Houston, Texas; 17 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 28, at St. Ann Catholic Church in Excelsior Springs. Burial with full military honors will be in St. Munchin Cemetery in Cameron. Kevin Langhammer
Kevin Langhammer, 54, son of Betty and Maurice O'Dell, died May 18, 2009, in Bangkok, Thailand, where he was teaching English to Thai children. Mr. Langhammer was the son of Betty and Maurice O'Dell. He was preceded in death by his father, John; a sister, Cindy Houston; and a stepbrother, Tony O'Dell. Robert Clyde Marchbank, 55, died Thursday, July 2, 2009, at Timberlake Care Center in Kansas City, Mo. Mr. Marchbank was born July 20, 1953, in Washington, Mo., and grew up in St. Clair. He was owner of Marchbank’s Heating and Cooling in Oak Grove, and had lived in the Kansas City area for 22 years. Ina Martin
Ina Mae Martin, 83, Richmond, Mo., died Sunday, July 12, 2009, at her home. Mrs. Martin was born Oct. 9, 1925, in Richmond, the daughter of Willie and Emily Katherine (Holloway) Wrisinger. She was married to Clifford Franklin Martin Sr. on Nov. 11, 1942; he preceded her in death on June 23, 1983. She was a homemaker. She and her husband served as church planting missionaries and, along with their family, started the Missouri City church in 1959. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Richmond. In addition to her husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Helen Barr; one brother, Harold Wrisinger; and one grandson, Daniel Martin. Survivors include seven children, Rev. Harold Martin, Hardin, Pat Goodall, Versailles, Diana Sutton, Henrietta, Archie Martin, Richmond, Linda McKee, Stover, Clifford Martin Jr., Richmond, and Rev. Evelyn M. Mischlich, 88, of Excelsior Springs, Mo. (formerly of Shawnee, Kan.), passed away Thursday, July 23, 2009, at the Excelsior Springs Convalescent Center. Evelyn was born Sept. 26, 1920, in Kansas City, Kan., to Maximillian and Amelia Streck. Evelyn was a lifelong Kansas City area resident. On Oct. 4, 1941, she married John A. Mischlich in Kansas City, Kan. He preceded her in death in October of 2000. She moved to Shawnee in March of 1954. Evelyn was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. She retired from Hallmark Cards in 1980 as a Purchase Systems Analyst after 20 years of service. In addition to her husband, Evelyn is also preceded in death by her three sisters, Elizabeth, Mary and Emma; and a brother, Joseph. She is survived by her son, John K. Mischlich and his wife, Dianne, of Excelsior Springs, Mo.; two grandsons, Matthew J. Mischlich, Avondale, Ariz., and Timothy J. Mischlich and wife, Tina, of Kearney, Mo.; two great-granddaughters, Kaylea and Allison, of Kearney, Mo.; and many nieces, nephews and friends also survive her. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, July 26, at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee. Mrs. O’Dell was born Aug. 6, 1929, in Lawson, the daughter of George Francis and Zelma (Brooks) Jones. She was married to Cletus Caleb O’Dell on Sept. 6, 1948; he survives. She was employed with J.C. Penney, J.J. Newberry and also at Springs Fabrics. She was a beautician and seamstress for many years. She was the last living charter member of Prathersville Bible Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Dannie O’Dell, on March 15, 2005; and one sister, Geraldine Trailer. In addition to her husband, survivors include two sons, David O’Dell, Joplin, and Dennis O’Dell, Kansas City, Kan.; two sisters, Joyce Swearingen, Wood Heights, and Wanda Kennedy, Mosby; one brother, Harold Jones, Prathersville; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson. Jerry P. Reding, 69, Blue Springs, Mo., died Saturday, July 11, 2009, at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Mr. Reding was born Dec. 31, 1939, the son of Francis and Charlyne (Castle) Reding. He was married to Sharon (Johnson) Reding on April 15, 1972; she survives of the home. He was a longtime member of St. John Lalande Catholic Church in Blue Springs. He worked for General Motors for many years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Martha Glasscock. Mary Frances Carroll Scheetz, 88, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Thursday, July 30, 2009, at her home. Mrs. Scheetz was born March 8, 1921, in Kansas City, the daughter of Marion Franklin and Irene (Crow) Payne. She was married to Glen Carroll on Nov. 8, 1938; he died July 2, 1980. She was married to Guy Scheetz on Oct. 8, 1978; he died Sept. 18, 2008. Following her marriage she raised her family, worked at the McCleary Clinic during World War II and also worked at The Oaks. She and her husband owned and operated the Marietta Drug Store in downtown Excelsior Springs for more than 40 years. In addition to her husbands and her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Jimmie Glen Carroll, on April 30, 2000. Survivors include three children, Marcie Northrop, Tucson, Ariz., and Tom Carroll and Glenda Saura, both of Excelsior Springs; six stepchildren, Diana Hefner, Cabot, Ark., Steven Scheetz, Rochester, Wash., Karl Scheetz, Spring Creek, Nev., Cinthia Boone, Cabot, Ark., Patricia Scheetz, Aberdeen, Wash., and Eric Scheetz, Minden, Nevada; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Lucile Woods-Stockton
Lucile Fern Woods-Stockton, 93, Liberty, Mo. (formerly of Orrick, Mo.), died Saturday, July 11, 2009, at Pleasant Valley Manor in Pleasant Valley, Mo. Mrs. Woods-Stockton was born June 1, 1916, in Ray County, the daughter of Clarence Herbert and Mary Eunice (O’Dell) Stevinson. She taught school for two years, and later worked as a seamstress for the Nelly Don Garment Factory. She was of the Baptist faith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Vernon Woods, in 1978; her second husband, Raymond Stockton, in 1981; a son, Marvin K. Woods, in 2000; sisters, Louise Rieman, Maxine Peters and Velma Maddux; and a brother, Herbert “Bud” Stevinson. Survivors include daughters, Pat Davis, St. Peters, and Judith Smith and Mary Joyce Lowden, both of Liberty; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great-grandchildren. Wayne Stone
Wayne H. Stone, 85, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Wednesday, July 22, 2009, at Liberty Hospital in Liberty, Mo. Mr. Stone was born May 15, 1924, in Colo, Iowa, the son of John and Hazel (Hauser) Stone. His father passed away when he was very young and his mother was married to Hermon Leroy Bowlin, who raised him as his own. He was married to Mary Alice Lokke on Feb. 14, 1947. He was an over-the-road truck driver with the CB handle “P. Mooney,” retiring after more than 25 years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Leona Teigen; and four sons in infancy. Survivors include his wife, Mary Alice Stone, of the home; one son, Michael John Stone, Marshalltown, Iowa; one daughter, Kathy (Stone) Romang, Independence; one sister, Virginia Jackson, Marshalltown, Iowa; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Richard Wayne Thompson, 60, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Wednesday, July 29, 2009, at Liberty Hospital in Liberty, Mo. Mr. Thompson was born May 20, 1949, in Dallas, Texas, the son of John Burke and Verline (Weaver) Thompson. Mr. Thompson was born and raised in Texas, and had lived in various places throughout his life. He had been employed as a surveyor, worked for a cable company and for 17 years worked for Ford Motor Company in Claycomo, from which he retired in 1992. He was preceded in death by his father and his grandparents. Survivors include his mother and stepfather, George “Buddy” and Verline Heitman of Seven Points, Texas; two daughters, Kamala McCoy and Tammy Jones, both of Excelsior Springs; one son, Michael Brandon Thompson, Excelsior Springs; two brothers, John Thompson, Canton, Texas, and Charles Heitman, Kansas City, Mo.; one sister, Barbara Heitman, Seven Points, Texas; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Margaret Toms
Margaret Ann Toms, 87, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009, at Valley Manor and Rehabilitation Center in Excelsior Springs. Mrs. Toms was born Aug. 10, 1921, in Richmond, the daughter of Herman and Lenah (Evans) Richardson. She was married to George Hall Toms on Sept. 25, 1940; he survives. She attended public schools in Richmond and Rayville. A homemaker, she had also worked at Gas-N-Go and the Lewis School cafeteria. She was a member of Flack Memorial Christian Union Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters. Anna Troutman
Anna Leona Troutman, 84, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Sunday, July 12, 2009, at Excelsior Springs Hospital. Ms. Troutman was born April 30, 1925, in Vincennes, Ind., the sixth of 13 children of Josephine and Louis M. Hunckler. She was a member of Salem Christian Union Church. For the last 27 months, she lived at Lawson Manor & Rehab. Vern Vance
Vern E. Vance, 83, Henrietta, Mo., died Tuesday, July 7, 2009, at North Kansas City Hospital in North Kansas City, Mo. Mr. Vance was born June 19, 1926, in Ray County, the son of Jesse Hugh and Myrtle Alice (Bellis) Vance. He was married to Lillian Florence Hessenflow on Nov. 19, 1949. He worked at General Motors for 33 years before he retired in 1985. He was a member of the Henrietta Baptist Church. He lived in Henrietta most of his life. Survivors include his wife, Lillian Vance, of the home; two sons, Mike Vance, Richmond, and Mark Vance, Overland Park, Kan.; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services were set for 11 a.m. Friday, July 10, at the Henrietta Baptist Church in Henrietta, with visitation during the hour before the services at the church. Burial with military graveside services by Lexington VFW Post #4052 at Richmond Memory Gardens in Richmond. Arrangements are through Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond. Memorial contributions may be made to the Henrietta Baptist Church.

Sharon D. (Schoolfield) Wyse, age 61, a resident of Chillicothe, Mo., passed away at her residence on Sunday, July 26, 2009. She was born on Aug. 5, 1947, in Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of Flow Rowell and Margaret (Freeman) Schoolfield. On Aug. 15, 1981, at Excelsior Springs, Mo., she married Harry Wyse. He survives of the home. Sharon moved to Chillicothe from Excelsior Springs in 1984. She was a homemaker. Harry and Sharon were co-owners of the Chillicothe Bootery and Shoe Repair, Chillicothe, Mo. Sharon was a member of the Lighthouse Chapel, Chillicothe, Mo. Sharon is also survived by two daughters, Glenda Bruyer and husband, Tim, of Crane, Mo., and Elizabeth Anderson and husband, Jason, of Chillicothe, Mo.; one stepson, Stephen Wyse, of Columbia, Mo.; two stepdaughters, Brenda Hughes and husband, Norman, of Kansas City, Mo., and Laura Schneider and husband, Tom, of Phoenix, Ariz.; two brothers, George Schoolfield, of Cameron, Mo., and Ronald Schoolfield and wife, Sherry, of Kearney, Mo.; one sister, Rebecca Bartlett, of Ottawa, Kan.; 10 grandchildren, Austin Anderson, Garrett Anderson and Luke Anderson, all of Chillicothe, Mo., Madison Wyse and Nathan Bruyer, Crane, Mo., Samantha Parkhaurst and Shawn Russell, Kansas City, Mo., Sabino Schneider, Lorena Schneider and Valarie Schneider, Phoenix, Ariz.; one great-grandchild, Corben Parkhaurst, of Kansas City, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Nina (Schoolfield) Mills; and one brother, Ervin Schoolfield. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 29, at the Lighthouse Chapel in Chillicothe, Mo. There will be a scheduled family visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 28, at Lindley Funeral Home in Chillicothe, Mo. Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery in Chillicothe, Mo. Memorial contributions may be made to Cancer Treatment Centers of America, in care of Lindley Funeral Home, P.O.
