*Gerald E. Adams
Gerald E. Adams, 78, of Orrick, Mo. died Wednesday, July 30, 2008 at his home. Mr. Adams was born June 2, 1930, in Ray County, Mo. to Frank and Joan (Shelton) Adams. He married Ona May Tackett of Excelsior Springs, Mo., on June 12, 1948; she preceded him in death on Feb. 5,1998. Mr. Adams was a welder for Freuhauf in Kansas City, Mo., for 10 years before retiring in 1995. Prior to that, he was a welder for the Trailmobile Corporation in Kansas City for over 30 years. He lived most of his life in Orrick. He was of the Christian faith. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one son, David Duane Adams; two brothers, Farrell Adams and Grover Adams; and two sisters, Leona Hagans and Erma Frazier. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Bruce Edward and Teresa Adams of Missouri City; one daughter and son-in-law, Carla Kay and Wayne Hill of Orrick; two sisters, Joyce King and Joann Meyer both of Excelsior Springs; seven grandchildren, Brian Adams, Katherine Adams, Franklin Adams, Alison Adams, Amber Creason, Devin Creason and his wife, Tina, and Jaron Hill; and four great-grandchildren, Wesley, Cheyenne, Kiona and Charmaine Creason. Funeral services will be Monday, Aug. 4, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. at the Thurman Funeral Home, Richmond, Mo. Visitation will be Sunday, Aug. 3, from 7-8 p.m. at the Thurman Funeral Home. Thurman Funeral Home, Richmond, Mo., is in charge of the arrangements.
Shirley Adams
Shirley Ann (Burnett) Adams, 66, Hamilton, Mo., died Monday, July 7, 2008, at Hillcrest Manor in Hamilton. Ms. Adams was born March 23, 1942, in Gallatin, the daughter of Clevis James and Reve (Gastineau) Burnett. She had worked as a nurse1s aide at Hillcrest Manor in Hamilton. She attended the Assembly of God Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two children, Melinda M. Clariday and Dennis C. Adams; and six siblings, Virginia, Francis, Alice, Norman, C.J. and Phyllis. Survivors include one daughter, Alicia Prewitt, Lawson; one son, John Adams, Breckenridge; siblings, Helen Hahn, Cameron, Nancy Vernoy, Oregon, Omie DeVaul, Kansas City, Judy, California, and Ray Burnett, Chillicothe; nine grandchildren, April, Casey and Austin Prewitt, Lawson, Charles, L. John, Wesley and Trevor Adams, Breckenridge, Kayla Clariday, Lathrop, and Eric Adams, New Cambria; and one great-granddaughter. Memorial services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 10, at Polley Funeral Home in Lawson, Mo.
Velda Gertrude Alt
Velda G. Alt, 67, of Liberty, Mo., died on July 30, 2008, at her home. Velda is survived by her sons, Jerret and Jeff and wife, Julie, and grandson Ian. Arrangements were made with Heartland Cremation and Burial Society.
Georgia Armstrong
Georgia I. Armstrong, 94, Lawson, Mo., died Tuesday, July 22, 2008, at Liberty Hospital in Liberty, Mo. Mrs. Armstrong was born Dec. 20, 1913, in Gallatin, the daughter of John Payne and Bessie D. (Vorhees) Rogers. She was married to Cecil F. Armstrong on Sept. 23, 1936; he preceded her in death. She moved to Lawson in 1994 from Cape Fair, Mo. She retired from St. Mary's Hospital in 1976. In addition to her husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, William and Linda Armstrong, Lawson, and Richard and Cathy Armstrong, North Kansas City; three grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, July 25, at Polley Funeral Home in Lawson. Visitation was held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Cremation.
Patricia Blann
Patricia A. Blann, 72, Richmond, Mo., died Sunday, July 13, 2008. Memorial graveside services were scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, July 18, at Hickory Grove Cemetery, north of Richmond. Arrangements are through Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond. Memorial contributions may be made to the Patricia Blann Memorial Fund.
Muriel Balicki
Muriel G. Balicki, 87, Slater, Mo., died Tuesday, July 22, 2008, at the Fitzgibbon Hospital in Marshall, Mo. Mrs. Balicki was born Aug. 9, 1920, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, the daughter of the late Edward J. and Cecil Mae Ferritor Schilling. She was married to Eugene L. "Gene" Balicki on March 2, 1941; he survives, of the home. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Slater. She worked as librarian of the Slater Public Library for 17 years before she retired. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Ruth Johnson and Colleen Chouinard. In addition to her husband, survivors include a son, Clifford G. Balicki, Excelsior Springs; a daughter, Gail A. de la Fuente, Rosarito, Mexico; two sisters, Phyllis Locke, Springfield, and Patricia Havel, Port Orange, Fla.; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Cremation. Memorial services were set for 10 a.m. Friday, July 25, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Slater, with Fr. Michael Penn officiating. Inurnment was set for 1 p.m. Friday at the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital or the Salvation Army, in care of Weiker Funeral Home in Slater.
C.D. Carrel
Calvin D. "C.D." Carrel, 76, Excelsior Springs, Mo., passed away Saturday, July 5, 2008, at his home. Mr. Carrel was born May 4, 1932, to Harry B. and Louella Stockton in Liberty. They moved to Excelsior Springs in 1942, and he graduated from Excelsior Springs High School in 1950. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He was a deacon of Excelsior Springs Baptist Church, serving through the years as Sunday School Superintendent, Trustee and Chairman of the Personnel Committee, and he enjoyed many other activities. He served for several years on the Excelsior Springs Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of the Excelsior Springs Optimist Club, having served as President and in other capacities, and received the Optimist of the Year award twice. He had been an active member of Ducks Unlimited for many years, and was a life member of the American Legion. C.D. loved hunting, fishing, gardening and watching a feeding his feathered friends. During mushroom season he and his good friend, the late Ronald Duncan, could be found in the woods as long as they both were able. He married Irene (Smith) Carrel in 1956; she survives, of the home. C.D. retired from the Excelsior Springs Post Office, serving more than 30 years as a letter carrier. C.D. is survived by his brother, H.B. "Shorty" Carrel and his wife, Elsa. He also leaves a niece and nephews, other family members and a host of friends. His parents and one brother preceded him in death. Funeral services were set for 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 8, at Excelsior Springs Baptist Church; burial was to follow in Fairview Cemetery in Liberty, Mo. Friends were invited to call from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church, prior to the service. Arrangements are through Bross & Spidle Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. Memorial contributions may be made to Excelsior Springs Baptist Church.
Kathy Gesling-Clark
Kathy Ann Gesling-Clark, 52, Kearney, Mo., died Wednesday, July 2, 2008. Mrs. Gesling-Clark was born Jan. 24, 1956, in Kansas City, the daughter of Ralph Richie and Loretta Griggs Brock. She had worked as an Allstate Insurance agent when she lived in Liberty, and served as president of the Liberty Area Chamber of Commerce in 1993. In 1995 she moved to Florida and was married to Steve Gesling. She returned to this area in 2000, and her husband preceded her in death in 2002. She and her sister, Brenda, had owned and operated Christenson Country Inn, a bed and breakfast in Lathrop. She was married to Darrell Clark on Dec. 29, 2006, and they lived in Kearney. In addition to her first husband, she was preceded in death by her father. Survivors include her husband, Darrell Clark, of the home; two sons, Adam Schwarel and David Schwarel, both of Liberty; her mother, Loretta Brock, Lathrop; two brothers, Wade Richie Brock, Richmond, and Jim Brock, Polo; three sisters, Signa Carter, Polo, Brenda Blogett, Lathrop, and Carolyn Baker, Macon; stepchildren, Christie Fitzmorris, Steve Gesling, Aaron Clark, Amy Branson and Rebekah Clark; and two grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 7, at the Christian Church in Lathrop; burial in Fairview Cemetery in Kearney. Friends were invited to call from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, July 6, at Fry-Bross & Spidle Chapel in Kearney. Evelyn Cockrum
Evelyn Kathleen Cockrum, newborn daughter of Jacob and Ginny Cockrum, Lawson, Mo., was born and died July 15, 2008. In addition to her parents, survivors include one brother, Kevin Cockrum, of the home; one sister, Olivia Cockrum, of the home; grandparents, Troy and Kathy Cockrum, Rayville, and Christopher and Peggy Simpson, Excelsior Springs; great-grandparents, Arvil and Joanne Cockrum, Warsaw, Neva Jones, Kearney, and Wayne and Lynn Simpson, Lebanon; aunts and uncles, John and Shanna Eisenbrandt, Excelsior Springs, Chris and Caty Mathews, Orrick, Trevor Cockrum, Excelsior Springs, Devlin Cockrum, Rayville, William Vroom, Excelsior Springs, Chad Howell, Lawson, Mo; and cousins, Declan Cockrum, Rayville, and Libby Ann Mathews and Cory Don Mathews, Orrick, Mo. In accordance with the family's wishes, arrangements are private and underthe direction of Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs.
*Anna D. Cravens
Anna Dean Cravens, 62, of Excelsior Springs, Mo., passed away Thursday, July 3, 2008, at her home. Born Jan. 22, 1946, in Kansas City, Kan., she was the daughter of Raymond Kenneth and Iva Geraldine (Noble) Norton. On June 15, 2007, she was married to Roger Durwood Cravens Jr., and he preceded her in death Dec. 2, 2007. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Deanna Norton; three brothers, Kenneth Norton, Charles Munson and Louis Munson; and a sister, Ida Bastow. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Shawn and Rebecca Cravens, of Richmond; two brothers, Mike Munson and William Munson, both of Carrollton; four sisters, Retta Foster of Lawson, Carolyn Newens of Wisconsin, Tammy Munson of Louisiana, and Elizabeth Gossen of Iowa; and two stepgrandsons, Jason and Jacob. Anna had been employed as a certified nurse's aide and had worked in the Excelsior Springs area all of her life. Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 12, at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. Inurnment will be at a later date in Hillcrest Cemetery in Excelsior Springs. The family has requested memorials to the Anna Cravens Memorial Fund, in care of Polley Funeral Home.
"DeWayne" Crawford
Gordon "DeWayne" Crawford, 60, Salina, Kan., died Sunday, July 6, 2008. Mr. Crawford was born March 19, 1948, in Excelsior Springs, Mo., the son of the late Elsie Juanita Crawford. He graduated from Excelsior Springs High School. He was a roofer for Cedarwood Shake Roofing of Salina. Survivors include friends in Salina and New Cambria, Kan.; a daughter and son-in-law, Amber and Stephen Crawford-Osler, Malvern, Iowa; two grandchildren, Chloe Morse and Gavin Osler, plus twin boys due in September. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 12, at Carlson-Geisendorf Funeral Home in Salina, Kan. Burial will follow at Gypsum Hill Cemetery in Salina. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, July 11, at the funeral home.
Becky Drew
Becky L. Drew, 28, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Sunday, July 20, 2008, at Watkins Mill State Park near Excelsior Springs. Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, July 24, at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond, followed by memorial services at 11 a.m. Thursday. Inurnment will be held in Graff Cemetery in Braymer.
*Alan D. Dye
Alan D. Dye,50, of Kearney, Mo., enter eternal life on Friday, July 25, 2008, at Liberty Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. His loving family surrounded him as he passed into peace and rest. Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 29, at the Fry-Bross and Spidle Chapel, Kearney. Burial will be in Antioch Cemetery, Holt, Mo. Friends could call from 6:30-8 p.m. on Monday at the funeral chapel. Alan was born Aug. 14, 1957, in Excelsior Springs, Mo., the son of Kenneth D. and Betty Jo Summers Dye. He was reared in Excelsior Springs, Mo., and graduated from Excelsior Springs High School in 1975. On April, 15, 2006, in Cocoa Beach, Fl., he married Monica Campanella. Alan spent many hours golfing and fishing, which brought him great pleasure. He was repairman for Ford Motor Company for 20 years retiring in February 2007. He was a member of the UAW local 249. Alan was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Janet Dye. He is survived by his wife Monica, two sons: Daniel Dye and his wife Andrea, Montgomery, Al., and Sean Payne, Kearney, Mo., two daughters: Vickie Walker and her husband Jereme, Gladstone, Mo., and Lisa Clevenger, St. Anstar, Iowa and eight grandchildren, and man's best friend dog, Winston. Arrangements were made with Fry Bross and Spidle Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
*Lawrence E. Dysart
Lawrence E. Dysart, 76, Excelsior Springs, Mo. passed away Tuesday, July 29, 2008, at his home. Lawrence was born on February 5, 1932, in Kansas City, Mo., the son of Raymond E. and Gussie T. (Robertson) Dysart. He worked as an accountant for Kansas City Power and Light Co. He was a member of the Eastgate Lodge #630 A.F.&A.M. of Kansas City and the Clay Lodge #207 A.F.&A.M. of Excelsior Springs, Mo. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Excelsior Springs, Mo. He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America and the Tribe of Mic-O-Say. Lawrence was an accomplished pianist and had played for various churches over the years and had played with the Gospelaires and with the Leland Jones Country Music Opry. Survivors include two brothers and sisters-in-law: Robert E. and Carol Dysart of Disney Oklahoma and Charles R. and Joy Dysart of Lee's Summit, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews. The family suggests Memorial Conributions be given to The Shriner's Childrens Hospital or to the Salvation Army. Funeral Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, August 2, 2008, at the Polley Funeral Home, Excelsior Springs, Mo. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Kansas City, Mo. The family will receive friends 6 - 8 p.m. with a Masonic Service at 8 p.m. Friday at the Polley Funeral Home Excelsior Springs, Mo.
Paul D. Fenner
Paul D. Fenner, 69, of Richmond, Mo., died on Sunday, July 27, 2008, at his home in Richmond. Paul was born July 12, 1939, in Waverly, Mo., to Edward and Blanche (Slayer) Fenner. He married Sandra Clark of Richmond on Nov. 10, 1962; she survives of the home. Additional survivors include two sons and two daughters-in-law, Mark and Dawn Fenner of Parkville, Mo., and Chris and Laura Fenner of Olathe, Kan.; one half-brother, Bobby Reed of Lexington; and seven grandchildren, Payton, Cole and Caleb Fenner and Madeline, Thomas, Stephanie and Rachel Fenner. Paul had worked as an insulator for Heat and Frost Insulator and Asbestos Workers Union Local # 27 in Kansas City, Mo. He was also the Director of Maintenance at the Quarterage Hotel in Kansas City. Paul was a member of the Richmond First Christian Church. He had lived in Lexington before moving to Richmond in 1965. He was a 1957 graduate of Lexington High School. He also attended CMSU and MU. He was a former Richmond City Councilman. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Richmond First Christian Presbyterian Church. Memorial services will be at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 20, at the Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 30, at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond. Inurnment will be at a later date. Arrangements were made with Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond.

Ellen Nadeen Gray, 75, Lawson, Mo., passed away Tuesday, July 22, 2008, at Liberty Terrace Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center. Ellen was born May 31, 1933, to parents Walter R. & Ruth (Trent) Hughes in Oklahoma City, Okla. While Ellen was a loving mother and homemaker, she was also a cook at Liberty Hospital. On Nov. 6, 1952, in Arkansas, she married William Cleo Gray. Ellen was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ in Excelsior Springs, Mo. Ellen was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brother. She is survived by daughters, Renee Richardson and husband, David Bailey, Asheville, N.C., and Susie Summers and husband, Kim, Liberty, Mo.; foster daughter, Estella Bradley and husband, Gene, Mills River, N.C.; son, Hershall Gray and wife, Fran, Wood Heights, Mo.; sister, Carol Clevenger, Pleasant Hill, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren. Funeral services for Ellen will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 26, at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 25, also at the funeral home. Burial will be held at Salem Cemetery in Wakenda, and will take place around 12:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to Odyssey Hospice.
*Charles "Gene" Gulley
Charles "Gene" Gulley, 82, Lawson, Mo., passed away Tuesday, July 15, 2008, at his home. Gene was born on May 30, 1926, in Lawson, Mo., the son of Oscar and Ella (Parker) Gulley. He attended Lawson High School. He was united in marriage to his wife of over 57 years, Marjorie Marie (Teegarden) Gulley, on May 22, 1948, in Dearborn, Mo. Gene was in the Mobil Oil business in the Lawson area for more than 40 years. He had also worked for Pepard Seed Company. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a Radar Man 3rd Class aboard the USS Severson. Gene was a member of the Bee Hive Lodge in Lawson, Mo., and also a member of the United Christian Presbyterian Church in Lawson. Besides his parents, Gene was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie, on Jan. 11, 2006; two brothers, Roy and Olen "Doc" Gulley; and two sisters, Louise Partin and Lovita Gaines. Survivors include many nieces, nephews and friends.Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 18, at the United Christian Presbyterian Church in Lawson, Mo. Burial will be in the Lawson Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 17, at the Polley Funeral Home in Lawson, Mo. There will also be a Masonic service during the visitation Thursday evening. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the church or Lawson Fire and Rescue.
*Bernice Harris
Bernice M. Harris, 60, Excelsior Springs, Mo., passed away peacefully in the comfort of friends and family on Monday, July 21, 2008, at Liberty Hospital in Liberty, Mo. Bernice was born the 11th of 13 children to Japtha H. and Helen A. Garner on March 10, 1948. She was a lifelong resident of Excelsior Springs, Mo. She attended Excelsior Springs High School and graduated from the Martinez School of Cosmetology. Bernice continued her cosmetology training abroad by studying in London. Following her vast training, Bernice opened and co-owned BK Hair Company in 1981. Clients that sat in Bernice's styling chair received so much more than a haircut, color or perm. She took an active interest in her clients' lives and often became their friend and confidant. Bernice truly touched the lives of generations through her craft. Bernice was a devoted Christian and attended the Main Street Baptist Church. She was an avid high school football fan and enjoyed attending the Excelsior Springs High School home games. After she semi-retired, she volunteered at the Excelsior Springs Historical Museum and was a mentor for the Youth Friends program offered through the Excelsior Springs School District. In her younger days, Bernice was quite the athlete, loving to play and compete in softball and volleyball. Bernice loved to go dancing with her friends, with her favorite music being R&B and Motown. She loved tending her flowers and one of her favorite pastimes was watching old movies. She was a fabulous cook and loved hosting family dinners for birthdays and holidays. Bernice was happiest when she was surrounded by her family and friends. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren. She was a profound and vital member of the Excelsior Springs community. She was loved, well-known and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Bernice leaves to cherish her memory her son and daughter-in-law, Jason and Brenna Harris, Smithville, Mo.; three grandchildren, Kaden, Korbin, and Kolby; three sisters, Dorothy Reece, Excelsior Springs, Betty Jean Ward, Kansas City, and Frances Garner, Liberty; and many adoring nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 26, at the Excelsior Springs Baptist Church, Hwy. 69, Excelsior Springs. Arrangements are through Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. The family suggests memorial contributions be given to the Kansas City Hope Lodge.
David Howard Sr.
David Allen Howard Sr., 70, died Wednesday, July 2, 2008, at his home in Excelsior Springs, Mo. Mr. Howard was born Sept. 20, 1937, in Carrollton, the son of Charlie Clarence and Tempy Elizabeth (Scott) Howard. He was a Teamsters truck driver and drove for Orscheln Truck Lines from 1960 to 1982, then worked for the city of Excelsior Springs from 1984 until he retired in 1987. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Charles, Paul, Robert, Chester and Daniel Howard. Survivors include three children, Deborah Ann Loomis, Liberty, David Allen Howard Jr., Raytown, and Tamara Faye Marsalla, Liberty; three brothers, Donald, Kenneth, and Larry Howard; two sisters, Frances Collins and Marguerite Adair; and five grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 5, at Gibson Funeral Home in Carrollton, with the Rev. Rod McNeall officiating. Burial in Gilead Cemetery, Norborne, with a military service provided by Veterans of Foreign Wars Pence-Lovell-England Post #1773, Carrollton. Visitation was held from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home Saturday. Memorial contributions may be made to Gilead Cemetery in Norborne, in care of Gibson Funeral Home, 201 S. Main, Carrollton, Mo. 64633.
Richard Paul Johnson
Richard Paul Johnson, 83, of Richmond, Mo. died Monday, July 28,2008. Services are Friday, Aug. 1, 1:30 p.m. at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond, Mo. Burial at Richmond Memory Gardens with military graveside services. Visitation was from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 31, at the funeral home.
*"Bud" Lamb
Cecil E. "Bud" Lamb, 79, Excelsior Springs, Mo., passed away Thursday, July 24, 2008, at the Excelsior Springs Medical Center. Bud was born on Dec. 10, 1928, in Excelsior Springs, Mo., the son of Cecil and Livvie (Peery) Lamb. On April 17, 1949, Bud was united in marriage to Pat (Hart). He served in the U.S. Marines during the Korean Conflict. He was Postmaster in Excelsior Springs, Mo., for many years before retiring in 1984. Bud was a member of the Barbee Memorial Presbyterian Church in Excelsior Springs, Mo. Bud Loved spending time with his family, enjoyed fishing and enjoyed his Model A car. Besides his parents, Bud was preceded in death by one sister, Bea Brown. Flora C. Lockwood, 89, Smithville, Mo. (formerly of Excelsior Springs, Mo.), died Saturday, July 12, 2008. Ms. Lockwood was born May 19, 1919, in Prathersville, the daughter of Roy and Pet Hart Summers. She worked for the Social Security Administration. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Lockwood. Survivors include one daughter, Cathy Witt, Gower; one sister, Verna Lee Tester, Liberty; two brothers, Edwin Summers, Prathersville, and Paul Summers, Kansas; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Sammy Love, 78, of Excelsior Springs, Mo. died Saturday, July 26, 2008 at his home. Sammy was born on February 22, 1930 in Vibbard, Mo., the son of Bennie Joe and Opal (Coalman) Love. Margaret M. McCrary, 78, Breckenridge, Mo., died Monday, July 21, 2008, at Hill Crest Manor in Hamilton, Mo. Ms. McCrary was born March 23, 1930, in Breckenridge, the daughter of Ralph and Dorothy (Palmer) Adams. She was married to Francis Marshall McCrary on July 31, 1948; he died Sept. 24, 1990. She worked as an assistant at Pitts Funeral Home for several years. She also served as Breckenridge City Clerk and Water Collector for many years. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Breckenridge. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include one son, Rande McCrary, Trenton; one daughter, Cinda Olson, Excelsior Springs; one sister, Doris Logston, Excelsior Springs; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Jack W. Masters, 85, Richmond, Mo., died Monday, July 14, 2008, at his home. Mr. Masters was born Aug. 3, 1922, in Searcy, Ark., the son of Wesley K. and Atis (James) Masters. He was married to Pauline Tucker on July 15, 1946. He was owner and operator of Master's DX Service Stations in Orrick and Richmond from 1946 to 1973, and had lived in Richmond since 1955. He was also a farmer. He was of the Christian faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Jimmie Dale Masters; two sisters, Flora Hannsz and Margie Spor; and one grandson, Jerod Hamann. Survivors include his wife, Pauline Masters, of the home; one son, Ron Masters, Houston, Texas; two daughters, Jo Ann Whatley, Bolivar, and Marilyn Hamann, Warrensburg; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Herbert H. "Dutch" Murray, 79, Richmond, Mo., died Sunday, July 20, 2008, at his home. Mr. Murray was born Oct. 22, 1928, in Braymer, the son of Mary E. (Leslie) & Gilbert A. Murray. He worked as a foreman for both the United and Yount construction companies. He was married to Edith Geneva Chowning on May 18, 1963. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, two sisters and two grandsons. Survivors include his wife, Edith, of the home; daughters, Nona Isham, Richmond, and Mary Raley and Dorothy Quiggle, Olathe, Kan.; son, William Cline, Spring Hill, Kan.; sisters, Mona McBee and Patricia Murray, Braymer; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was born June 11, 1928, in Harrison County, near Blythdale, Mo., the daughter of William Oscar and Mary Gertrude (George) Osborn. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Lola Fine and an infant daughter, Lucia Ann. Survivors include four daughters, Carol Means and husband John of Kearney, Mo.; Barbara Baker and husband Wayne, Mary Smaller and Sandra Wardrip, all of Excelsior Springs; son, Joseph Wardrip of Gladstone, Mo.; brother, William Howard Osborn and wife Ruby of Bethany, Mo.; 14 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Mark Andrew Overman, 55, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Sunday, July 20, 2008, in Excelsior Springs. Mr. Overman was born Dec. 20, 1952, in Excelsior Springs, the son of Braden and Albertha (O'Dell) Overman. He had been employed as a food services supervisor at Liberty Hospital. He had attended Pisgah Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his father, Braden Overman, on July 19, 1986. Survivors include his mother, Albertha Overman, Excelsior Springs; three brothers, the Rev. David Overman and Jim Overman, both of Kansas City, and Dr. Paul Overman, Excelsior Springs; one sister, Mary Marriott, Kansas City; and other relatives and friends. Imogene Patchin
Imogene (May) Patchin, 91, died Monday, July 14, 2008, at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, Mo. Ms. Patchin was born in Excelsior Springs and spent her adult life in the Kansas City area. She was a member of New Hope Christian Church. She retired from the accounting department at the Federal Aviation Administration. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Wilbur L. May, in 1961; her second husband, Paul E. Patchin, in 1990; and a daughter, Wanda M. Holman. Survivors include two sons, Dennis L. May, Kansas City, and Roger D. May, of the home; three granddaughters; and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services were set for noon Friday, July 18, at D.W. Opal Peterman
Opal Irene Peterman, 89, died July 19, 2008, in Excelsior Springs, Mo. Ms. Peterman was born May 26, 1919, in Sylvia, Kan., the daughter of John and Lula (White) Ritter. She was married to Lewis Eugene Peterman on Dec. 3, 1938; he preceded her in death April 17, 1982. For most of her life, she lived in the Lathrop and Lawson area, where she and her husband were farmers. She was an active member of Lawson United Methodist Church her entire life. She moved to Excelsior Springs in 2004. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Stella Eaton, Hazel Peterman and Estle Short; and two brothers, Raymond and Reuel Ritter. Survivors include one daughter, MaryLou Schwarz, Excelsior Springs; a granddaughter, Angela Lynne Schwarz, Kennesaw, Georgia; a grandson, Jeffrey Michael Schwarz, Leawood, Kan.; one sister, Vada Sharp, Lawson; and one brother, Willis Ritter, Excelsior Springs. Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, July 22, at Polley Funeral Home in Lawson. Friends may also call after 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Paul Peterson
Paul David Peterson, 65, died Saturday, June 28, 2008, in Excelsior Springs, Mo. Mr. Peterson was born Dec. 30, 1942, the second of four children born to George L. Peterson and Margaret L. Perry. A fourth generation Arizonan, he grew up in Mesa, Ariz., graduating from Mesa High School and Spartan School of Aeronautical Engineering in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He retired from TWA/American Airlines in 2007. He was preceded in death by his father, George L. Peterson; and his sister, Jeanne Peterson Rhoden. Survivors include his daughter, Carissa Peterson; son, Xavier Peterson; and one granddaughter, all of Excelsior Springs; his mother, Margaret L. Brenner, Mesa, Ariz.; and a brother, Peter L. Peterson, and sister, Linda Bergeson, both of Mesa, Ariz. Graveside services and interment were held at the City of Mesa Cemetery. Arrangements were through Bunker's Garden Chapel in Mesa, Ariz.
Norma Ray
Norma Lea Ray, 68, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Friday, July 11, 2008, at her home. Mrs. Ray was born March 28, 1940, in Kidder, the daughter of William Brown and Nellie Ruth (Cutler) Luther. She was married to Robert Lee Ray on March 11, 1960, in Kansas City; he survives. After graduating from Polo High School, she worked in Kansas City. She later moved to Excelsior Springs, where she was employed at Tredegar Manufacturing. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Art; and one sister, Patty. In addition to her husband, survivors include three daughters, Ruby Noble, Kansas City, Bonnie Friend, Bowling Green, Ky., and Connie Bray, Excelsior Springs; two sons, Robert Ray, Kansas City, and Roger Ray, Liberty; three brothers, Bill Luther, Bethany, Jack Luther, Kansas City, and Jimmy Dale Luther, Hamilton; one sister, Betty Evans, Excelsior Springs; and six grandchildren. A memorial visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 15, at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. Inurnment will be at a later date. Jeff Richards
Jeff H. Richards, 83, Kansas City, Mo., died Friday, July 18, 2008, at Woodbine Healthcare and Rehabilitation Centre in Gladstone, Mo. Mr. Richards was born Feb. 17, 1925, in Bushong, Kan., the son of Allen Lincoln and Caroline J. (Watts) Richards. He was married to June Happy on May 20, 1950; she survives of the home. After serving in the Army during World War II, he moved to Kansas City and was employed by Midland International, retiring from there in 1981. He then was self-employed as a television repairman for 10 years. He attended the First Baptist Church in North Kansas City. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister. In addition to his wife, survivors include a brother-in-law, James M. Happy Sr.; a sister-in-law, Judith L. Norris; two nephews, James M. Happy Jr. and B. Patterson Happy; and one niece, Emelie G. Gunter. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 22, at Polley Funeral Home in Richmond. Burial will be in the Hardin Cemetery in Hardin. There is no visitation scheduled. Joal Parle Sage, wife of James Sage, who preceded her in death, passed away at her home on July 14, 2008, in Liberty. Joan was born to Francis and Cleo Parle on Feb. 23, 1931, in Excelsior Springs, Mo. Visitation will be held Thursday, July 17, at 11:30 a.m., followed by the celebration of Joan1s life at 1 p.m. at St. James Catholic Church in Liberty, Mo. Interment will be at Resurrection Cemetery. Our beloved mother's deep faith was an inspiration to us and all felt welcomed in her home. Joan had a unique gift of making a person feel especially loved by her whenever you were in her presence. Joan1s artistic abilities have been admired by many but more important to her was the enjoyment of painting with her companions. Joan will be remembered for her faith, dignity, grace and delightful sense of humor. Joan was the secretary of St. James Parish for 11 years until she retired in 1988. Joan was blessed to be involved as a companion in the Precious Blood Society. Joan is survived by her three sons, Stephen (Nancy) McCoy, Grandview, Mo., Michael McCoy, Independence, Mo., and Patrick (Suzanne) McCoy, Fayetteville, Ark.; and one daughter, Amy Shumate, Liberty, Mo. Also surviving are grandchildren, Matthew, Jessica, Abbi and Emily McCoy, Pam O1Brien, Beth (Eric) Dickey, Jeff O'Brien, Kolton and Alexis Kincade; great-grandchildren, Cameron O'Brien and Breck and Cole Dickey; and one brother, Tom (Vicky) Parle, Cameron, Mo. Eva Ruth Sandstrom, 89, Orrick, Mo., passed away Monday, July 28, 2008, at Shirkey Leisure Acres in Richmond, Mo. Eva Ruth Williams was born July 9, 1919, in rural Orrick, the daughter of Fred Elwyn and Nellie Jane (Stevinson) Williams. She was married to Eddie L. Sandstrom on July 19, 1941. They had owned and operated Sandstrom's Garage in Orrick for more than 30 years. They had also owned and operated Sandstrom's Skating Rink in Orrick for more than 20 years. She was a member of the Orrick Christian Church. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Eddie Sandstrom, in 1992; and her brother, Jesse Elwyn Williams. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon Ruth and A.J. Ivey, Excelsior Springs, and Mary Elizabeth and Jackie Blyth, Orrick; three grandchildren and their spouses, Brett and Kathy Ivey, Excelsior Springs, Barb Blyth and Jeff and Mel Blyth, all of Orrick; and six great-grandchildren, Jordan Ivey, Austin Ivey, Aaron Blyth, Ashlyn Blyth, Marcus and Brandon. Ray was born June 3, 1947, in Independence, the son of Raymond O. and Mildred Sapp. He is survived by his mother and step-father, Mildred and Gene Carey of Grain Valley; three sisters, Laura Knight and Katrina Titchenell of Harrisonville, Mo. and Patricia Charles; two brothers, Christopher Carey of Lee's Summit and William J. Sapp; his children and their spouses, Kevin and Maria Myers of Grain Valley; Bryce and Heaven Sapp of Lawson; Shana Rae Sapp of Baton Rouge; Shona and Jason Wood of Baton Rouge; Missy Sapp of Kansas; Carrie Sapp of Kansas; Jessica and Josh Jones of Plattsburg, Mo.; Raelynn Mildred Sapp of Lawson; and Luke Wayne Sapp of Excelsior Springs; and nine grandchildren. Ophelia Seaman
Ophelia L. Seaman, 92, of Smithville, Mo., passed away Thursday, July 31, 2008, at New Mark Care Center, Kansas City, Mo. Visitation was from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 31, at the funeral home. She was born on February 5, 1916, to Homer Hudson and Effie Alma (Webb) Owen in Liberty, Mo. She grew up in Smithville and graduated from Smithville High School. On October 10, 1936, she was united in marriage to George Henry Seaman. After their marriage, they lived in Smithville where they made their home. Her husband, George, passed away on November 3, 1995. Ophelia was a member of the First Baptist Church inSmithville. She loved to quilt and make sock monkeys and Raggedy Ann dolls. She was also preceded in death by her parents; one son, Robert Seaman; one son-in-law, Ray Marshall; two brothers, Junior Owen and Francis Owen; and one sister, Alma Gabbert. She is survived by two daughters, Lois Whetzel and husband, Kenneth, and Donna Marshall; and daugher-in-law, Edith Seaman all of Smithville; six grandchildren, David, Robert, Karen, Kevin Valerie and Becky; 10 great-grandchildren; sister, Martha Tolar and husband, Lee, Anaheim, Calif.; sister-in-law, Lorraine Owen, Kearney; several nieces, nephews and cousins, other relatives and many friends. "Bob" Slater
Robert J. "Bob" Slater, 82, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Friday, July 11, 2008, at the Excelsior Springs Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Excelsior Springs, Mo. Mr. Slater was born March 26, 1926, in Birmingham, Mo., the son of George and Sarah (Gulley) Slater. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the South Pacific and in China during World War II. He was married to Ruby (Baxter) Slater in 1948; she preceded him in death on Oct. 1, 2004. He worked for General Motors, retiring after 30 years of employment. Bob was a member of the American Legion Post #236 of Excelsior Springs for more than 60 years and VFW Post #741 in Excelsior Springs. He served as Chaplain for the Honor Guard for several years. He was also a member of a number of other organizations. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Erma, Eula and Mary. Survivors include three children, Karen Pennington, Lawson, Robert M. Slater, Lawson, and Kathy Jean Clevenger, Excelsior Springs; his fiance, Irma Turner, Lathrop; one brother, Billy Slater, Maryland; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Alvin K. Smith
Alvin " Al" K. Smith, 80, died on Friday, July 25, 2008, at the KU Medical Center. Al was born April 1, 1928, to Vernon and Iona (King) Smith of Camden, Mo. He attended schools at Camden and Orrick, Mo. Al served in the Merchant Marines during World War II and later served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. Al was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, William Smith. Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Joann of the home, sons, George Smith of Gallatin, Mo.; Vince Smith of Chillicothe, Mo.; daughters, Mryna Morris of Excelsior Springs, Mo.; and Jodella Brungardt of Parkville, Mo., Al has seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 29, at the McWilliams Funeral Home in Gallatin. Family visitation was Monday evening. Interment will be at the Highland Cemetery in Hamilton. John Lewis Standley died on Sunday, July 27, 2008, at the Fair View Nursing Home in Sedalia. Lewis married Ida Clara Gooch on June 3, 1961. She preceded him in death in 2000. He was also preceded by his parents; two sisters; three brothers; a step-son, Kennith Gooch; step-daughter, La Rue Wilson; step-son-in-law Bill Wilson; one great-grandchild and one nephew. Surviving are step-son Frank Gooch and wife Patsy of Sedalia; two-step daughters-in-law, Emma Jean Gooch and Barbara Wilson; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Minnie Dellosa, Erma Busing and Connie Chevalier. Ms. Walden was born March 11, 1970, in Cameron, the daughter of Connie Carder-Scott and John Walden, deceased. She was raised with her brothers, and later mothered two boys. She was a wonderful friend to all she met with a heart of gold. Survivors include her paternal grandmother, Ida Eckersley; mother, Connie Carder-Scott; brothers, Paul Carder, Tony Carder, and William "Billy" Scott; and her two sons, John and Dustin Clock. No public services will be held, though the family asks that you to keep us in your thoughts and prayers and Jay close to your hearts.

H. Allen Walker, Jr., 40, of Richmond, Mo., died Sunday, July 27,2008. Services are at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 2, at First Baptist Church in Richmond. Burial at Richmond Memory Gardens in Richmond. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 1. Arrangements were made with Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond, Mo.
Mary Watts
Mary Lorraine McCracken Watts, 90, Kansas City, Mo., died Thursday, July 31, 2008. Ms. Watts was born Dec. 5, 1917, in Flemington. She had worked as a keypunch operator and an office clerk. She was preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters. Survivors include three children, Marla Whiteman and Mark Watts, both of Kansas City, and Marshall Watts, Wildwood; two sisters, Jean Hutton, Kansas City, and Maxine Corbin, Kansas City, Kan.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Visitation was held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church in Liberty, with memorial services following at 2 p.m. Inurnment took place at White Chapel Cemetery in Gladstone. Arrangements are through D.W. Newcomer's Sons White Chapel Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army.
Virginia West
Virginia Sue West, 92, Excelsior Springs, Mo., passed away Wednesday, July 9, 2008, at the Excelsior Springs Convalescent Center. Virginia was born April 7, 1916, in Nevada, Mo., to Edna Pearl (Hess) & William Kelly Davis. On July 19, 1940, Virginia married Buford M. West in Independence. Together they owned and operated Western Auto between 1948 and 1968. Along with being a loving mother and homemaker, she worked as a cashier both at the Royal Grill and the Mill Inn Restaurant. Virginia was also a longtime member of Woods Memorial Christian Church in Excelsior Springs. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Richard Dean West; and brother, Bill Davis. She is survived by son, Robert Joe West and wife, Deborah, Excelsior Springs; granddaughters, Amy Lynn Longenecker and husband, Ryan, Columbia; Jenny Jo West, Excelsior Springs; and great-granddaughter, Gabby Bratton, Excelsior Springs. A graveside memorial service for Virginia will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 15, at Crown Hill Cemetery in Excelsior Springs. Helen White
Helen V. White, 83, Warrensburg, Mo., passed away Wednesday, July 2, 2008, at the Western Missouri Medical Center. She was born July 27, 1924, in the Robbins community of Johnson County, Mo., the daughter of Manning Clay and Almeda Mabel (White) Robbins. On Oct. 22, 1950, she was united in marriage to Roy Edward White at her parents' home in the Robbins community. She graduated as a valedictorian of her class of 1941 at Farmers High School. She also attended Central Missouri State Teachers College and St. Luke's School of Nursing, and graduated as a Registered Nurse. Mrs. White worked as a nurse for Dr. Folkner, Dr. Maxon and Dr. Glover, retiring in 1986 after 26 years of service. Mrs. White was a lifelong member of the Salem Cumberland Presbyterian Church in the Robbins community. She was also a member of the Fayetteville Homemakers Club and in the past had been a leader with the Mt. Moriah 4-H Club. Survivors include her husband, Roy E. White, Warrensburg; four children, Anne Patrick and husband, Ray, and Tom White and wife, Darles, all of Warrensburg, Janet Morehead and husband, Larry, Excelsior Springs, and Roy Lee White and wife, Carol, Warrensburg; a sister, Mabel Smith and husband, C.D., Odessa; 12 grandchildren, Jim Livengood, Bryan Livengood, Justin Patric, Barie Patrick, Hannah Copenhaver, Julie White, Andrew White, Rob Morehead, Skyler Morehead, Cara Hodkins, Travis Duchesne and Allison Duchesne; and nine and three-fourths great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, July 6, at Sweeney-Phillips & Holdren Funeral Home in Warrensburg, with the Rev. Bill Runyon officiating. Burial will in the Liberty Cemetery, north of Warrensburg. Pallbearers are the grandsons, Jim Livengood, Bryan Livengood, Justin Patrick, Travis Duchesne, Andrew White, Rob Morehead and Skyler Morehead. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, July 5, at the funeral home. Ruth Wilson
Ruth E. Wilson, 69, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Saturday, July 19, 2008. Ms. Wilson was a bookkeeper by profession. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Wilson; her companion, Bill Durham; four brothers, Dale Wright, Herbert Wright, Jay Wright, and Harold Wright; and one sister, Dorothy Moore. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Troy and Lisa Wilson; stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, Mike and Mary Wilson; sister, Phyllis Post; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 23, at Mount Moriah Terrace Park Funeral Home in Kansas City, with visitation from 1 to 2 p.m. Burial in Mount Moriah Terrace Park Cemetery.
Sydney Wisdom
Sydney MacKenzie Wisdom, infant daughter of Ron and Stacy (Bailey) Wisdom, was born July 15, 2008, in North Kansas City, Mo., and passed away Friday, July 18, 2008, at Children1s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Mo. She is survived by her parents, of Excelsior Springs; one sister, Bailey, of the home; grandparents, Brace and Diana Bailey, Excelsior Springs, and Ron and Maureen Wisdom, St. Louis; and great-grandfather, William H. Jackson, Excelsior Springs. She was preceded in death by her great grandparents, Hazel and Paul Wisdom, Grandma Rose, Eula Jackson and Norma and George Bailey. Funeral services were scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 22, at First United Methodist Church in Excelsior Springs. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Susan Rae Witt
Susan Rae Witt, 59 of Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Tuesday, July 29, 2008 at the Excelsior Springs Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Born April 12, 1949, in Flint, Mich., she was the daughter of James R. and Ruth R. (Levandowski) Witt. She was preceded in death by her parents and one son, Joseph Timothy Wells, on March 23, 1995. Survivors include daughter, Tiffany Manning and husband, Mike, of Polo, Mo.; son, Shane Wells and Brenda Pryor of Belton, Mo.; a sister, Deborah Varney and a brother, James Witt, both of Michigan; two grandsons, Dean Manning and Shane Michael Wells and several nieces and nephews. A memorial prayer service will be held Friday, Aug. 1, 2008, at 1:30 p.m. at the Excelsior Springs Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, 1003 Meadowlark Lane, Excelsior Springs, Mo. A Mass of Resurrection will be held Monday, August 4, 2008 at 10 a.m. at the Queen of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 71st and Metcalf in Overland Park, Kan., with inurnment to follow at Resurrection Cemetery in Lenexa, Kan. Cremation. Arrangements were made with Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs.
