Marlene Barnett
Bonnie “Marlene” Barnett, 72, Kansas City, Mo., died Monday, May 10, 2010, at North Kansas City Hospital. Ms. Barnett was born Aug. 25, 1937, in Dallas County, Iowa, the daughter of Alfred and Edith (Fitzpatrick) King. She was married to Charles Max Barnett on Oct. 21, 1956. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Sarah Welsh. Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Charles Max Barnett, of the home; two sons, Charles Barnett, Clinton, and Monty Barnett, Kansas City; three daughters, Beverly Baker, Grain Valley, Revae Martinez, Independence, and Kay Banning, Kansas City; four brothers, Eddie King, Trenton, Nolan King and Myron King, both of Pleasant Valley; and David King, Blue Springs; three sisters, Nadine King, Raytown, Zoella Hott, Gladstone, and Jewell Schlotterer, Liberty; 17 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, May 14, at the Heartland Church, 400 S.W. Lakeview Blvd., Blue Springs, with the family receiving friends from 5-7 p.m., prior to services, also at the church. Additional services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 15, at the Tenth Street Baptist Church in Trenton, with the family receiving friends from 1 to 1:30 p.m., prior to services, also at the church. Burial will be in rural Dale Cemetery near Laredo, Mo. Arrangements are through Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs, Mo.
*Donna Beers
Donna Margaret Beers, 72, Excelsior Springs, Mo., passed away Sunday, May 16, 2010, at her home. Donna was born on Aug. 14, 1937, in Concordia, Kan., the daughter of William Ralph and Elsie Clara (Erickson) Walker. On Jan. 30, 1965, she was married to Kenneth Beers, who preceded her in death on Sept. 23, 2009. She was a member of Flack Memorial Christian Union Church, Excelsior Springs, Mo. She was a member of the American Legion Ladies’ Auxiliary in Excelsior Springs and really enjoyed her involvement there. She loved her family and enjoyed family gatherings. She enjoyed playing bingo, Yahtzee and playing bridge with her friends. She loved to dance; she and Kenneth loved dancing. She was the FFA Valentine Queen in 1952 and in 1952-1953 was a Majorette Baton Twirler. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one sister, Charlotte Mullen. Survivors include seven children, Steffanie Weston of Liberty, Mo., Barbara Hughes of Liberty, Mo., Jimmie Kelley of Topeka, Kan., Jacqueline Gray of Excelsior Springs, Mo., Donna Johnston of Excelsior Springs, Mo., Sherry Carmack and husband, Roy, of Kentucky, and Victor Beers and wife, Cindy, of Clearwater, Kan.; two sisters, Virginia Swiercinsky of Bellville, Kan., and Phyllis Arline Johnston of Excelsior Springs, Mo.; 16 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, May 21, at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs, Mo. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Excelsior Springs, Mo. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 20, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Crossroads Hospice or to the American Legion #236 Ladies’ Auxiliary.
Charles Boyer
Charles J. Boyer, 22, Kansas City North, died Saturday, May 15, 2010, as the result of an automobile accident. Charles was the son of Kurt and Catherine Boyer. He loved karate and was passionate about physical fitness. In addition to his parents, survivors include two sisters, Alyson and Kelly; and grandmothers, Agnes Boyer and June Hinson-Sadler. Nadine D. Branson, 92, Richmond, Mo., died Monday, May 3, 2010. Services were scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, May 7, at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond. Visitation was held from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 6, at the funeral home. Burial in Machpelah Cemetery in Lexington. Memorial contributions may be made to the Keith Worthington Chapter of the ALS.
Julie Braughton
Julie Gail Braughton, 40, Kansas City, Mo., died Saturday, May 15, 2010, at Liberty Hospital in Liberty, Mo. Mrs. Braughton was born Jan. 31, 1970, in North Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of Ernie and Sandra (Brown) Gibbs. She was married to Joseph Braughton on Aug. 11, 1991. She was currently working for the Kansas City Star, delivering newspapers. She was a member of Siloam Spring Baptist Church, Excelsior Springs, Mo. Survivors include her husband, Joseph Braughton, of the home; two sons, Konnor and Keyen Braughton, of the home; her parents, Ernie and Sandra Gibbs, Rayville; one sister, Sally Hayson, Richmond; one brother, Jerry Gibbs, Louisburg, Kan.; and other relatives. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 20, at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Ayr Cemetery in Altamont, Mo. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 19, at the funeral home, and then from 8 to 10 p.m. Wednesday at the family home.
Victoria Canada
Victoria Pearle Canada, 61, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Thursday, May 6, 2010, at her home. Mrs. Canada was born Oct. 29, 1948, in McLean, Ill., the daughter of Mack and Pearle Phelps. She was a member of Abundant Praise Fellowship Church in Excelsior Springs. She was preceded in death by her parents, eight brothers and three sisters. Survivors include her husband, Maurice Canada, Missouri; one daughter, Sonda Woodrum, Illinois; four stepchildren, Wayne Cosey, Maurice Canada Jr., Latanya Canada and Anthony Canada; two sisters, Elzora McCombs and Betty Frost; two brothers, William Phelps and Larry Phelps; three grandsons; and one great-granddaughter. Cremation rites were performed. Burial will take place at a later date in Atlanta, Ill. There will be a visitation at 10 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m., on Friday, May 14, 2010, at Leroy Christian Church in Leroy, Ill., with Pastor Mike Menendes officiating. Arrangements are through Bross & Spidle Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. Memorial contributions may be made to the family.
Carl Chamberlain
Lawrence Carleton Chamberlain, 89, died Friday, May 7, 2010. Mr. Chamberlain was born April 17, 1921, in St. Louis, Mo. He spent his working years as a librarian at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., then after retirement moved to Kansas City, Mo., to be close to his family. He lived on the Country Club Plaza before moving to Our Lady of Mercy Retirement Home in Liberty for the last five years of his life. He was a a Catholic and was a participating member of Visitation Catholic Parish during his years in Kansas City and Liberty. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers and sisters. Survivors include his sister-in-law, Nell Chamberlain; 13 nieces and nephews; and his nieces’ and nephews’ families. Visitation was scheduled for 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 11, at Visitation Catholic Church in Kansas City, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Margaret Cicala
Margaret A. (Simon) Cicala, 61, Liberty, Mo., died Monday, May 10, 2010, at her home. Ms. Cicala was born Jan. 11, 1949, the daughter of Melvin J. and Mary Harrison Simon. Survivors include two daughters, Heidi Johnson and Heather Buhl; siblings, Carolyn Tate, Bill Simon and Bob Simon; and six grandchildren. Private family services, with cremation. Marion Clark
Marion W. Clark, 82, Orrick, Mo., died Monday, May 24, 2010, at Shirkey Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Richmond, Mo. Ms. Clark was born Feb. 1, 1928, in Kansas City, the daughter of Paul and Blanche (Riffe) Williams. She was married to Jack L. Clark on May 14, 1949; he preceded her in death on July 29, 2007. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Orrick Christian Church. She had been a member of the Liberty Hospital Auxiliary for several years. She was a former board member of the Bank of Orrick. She lived most of her life in Orrick. Survivors include two sons, Scott Clark, Orrick, and Randy Clark, San Jose, Calif.; one daughter, Paula Owen, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia; 10 grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 29, at Orrick Christian Church. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 28, at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond. Burial in South Point Cemetery, Orrick. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ray County Humane Society.

Marjorie Derstler
Marjorie C. Derstler, 86, died Saturday, May 1, 2010. Mrs. Derstler was born Oct. 6, 1923, in Rayville, the daughter of Mae and Aaron O’Dell. She was married to Vern Derstler on July 4, 1940. They lived in Richmond before moving to Sunrise Beach, then to Shawnee, Kan. Survivors include her husband, Vern Derstler, Shawnee, Kan.; daughter, Jeanie Brown; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Wendy Christine (Hammen) Dintino, 35, Kearney, Mo., died Friday, May 21, 2010, from complications due to a brain tumor. Helen Marie Dodge-Ruff, 83, Lawson, Mo., died Sunday, May 2, 2010, at her home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 5, at McGilley & Sheil Chapel in Kansas City; burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 4, at the chapel.
*Georgie Duncan
Georgie O. Phillips “Mammam” Duncan was born Feb. 2, 1930, to Willard G. “Red” Phillips and Ruth Winnefred Simmons Phillips in Olathe, Kan. She died at her home in Gladstone, Mo., on Friday, May 14, 2010. Georgie grew up in Olathe, but her family moved to California on Dec. 7, 1941. She married Lewis Donald “Don” Duncan on Jan. 18, 1947, in Los Angeles, Calif. They moved back to Missouri shortly thereafter and raised five children at their home in Missouri City, Mo., then moved to Excelsior Springs, Mo., in 1968. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lewis Donald Duncan; sisters, Katherine Stafford and Barbara Hornback; son, Donald W. Duncan; and daughter, Nita Lynn Smith. Georgie is survived by her daughters, Susan Rose, of Gladstone, and Pamela Crowell, of Liberty; son, David Duncan, of Excelsior Springs; grandchildren, Neil Rose, Tod Rose, Monica Hensler, Matt Duncan, Duncan Barnett, Sarah Rohaus, Daniel Duncan, Scott Duncan, Elizabeth Dean, Georgie Anna Duncan and Dawn Jessen; 13 great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and her “Soul Sisters,” Meredith Turner and Ellen Medley. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 18, at Northland Cathedral, 101 N.W. 99th St., Kansas City, MO 64155. *Charlotte Lou (Wilkey) Elsea
Charlotte Lou (Wilkey) Elsea, 43, of Lee’s Summit, Mo., passed away May 25, 2010, at the Kansas City Hospice House after a three-year battle with cancer. Family and friends will gather for visitation at Walker Nadler Fuller Funeral Home, 1720 South Street, Lexington, Mo., between the hours of 6-8 p.m. on Friday, May 28. Services will be at the funeral home on Saturday, May 29, at 10 a.m. with interment to follow at the Lexington Memory Gardens. Charlotte was born on July 9, 1966, in Independence, Mo., to Lyndel and Barbara Wilkey. She graduated from Excelsior Springs High School in 1984 and earned her BS degree in nursing from Missouri Western State University. After graduation, she began her nursing career at the Ray County Memorial Hospital in Richmond, Mo., and completed her career at Menorah Medical Center in Overland Park, Kan., where she is fondly remembered not only as a good friend and companion by many but as an outstanding nurse to her patients in the pre-op area. Charlotte and Roger M. Elsea were united in marriage in 1992 in St. Joseph, Mo. After living and working in northern Indiana for three years, they settled in the Kansas City area where she began her job with Menorah. They were blessed with the birth of their only child, Jackson Mark, in 2005. Charlotte is survived by her husband and son of the home; her parents of Kingsville, Mo.; her brother, Tony Wilkey of Lawrence, Kan.; her mother-in-law, June Elsea of Lee’s Summit; and her other in-laws, Janice (Gerald) Lohoefener of Lexington, Mo., and Michele (James) Smith of Blue Springs, Mo., along with numerous others in her extended family. Her father-in-law, Roger Elsea, preceded her in death in 2002. Charlotte will be greatly missed by all that were fortunate to know her. The family would like to extend a special thanks to all the very caring people at the Kansas City Cancer Center (Lee’s Summit campus), KU Cancer Center and the Kansas City Hospice House, along with all our very special friends and family members that have stood along our side during these difficult times. Bonnie Farley, 82, Liberty, Mo., died Monday, May 3, 2010. Ms. Farley was born Feb. 12, 1928, in Noble, Ohio, the daughter of William and Grace Johnson Kuhn. She was preceded in death by her husband, John L. Farley. There are no survivors. Frances K. Giacone, 84, Kearney, Mo., died Monday, May 3, 2010. Survivors include two sons, Harry Giacone and David Giacone; her daughter, Carole Giacone; two grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. Brent Green
Brent Daniel Green, 25, Lawson, Mo., died Friday, May 14, 2010, at KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan. Mr. Green was born Feb. 27, 1985, in Kansas City, Mo., the son of Mark and Kim (McConnell) Green. He was a 2004 graduate of Lawson High School. He had worked for Lawson Super and was currently employed by Gilmour Manufacturing in Excelsior Springs, Mo. He was a member of Lawson Baptist Church. Survivors include his parents, Mark and Kim Green, of the home; one brother, Troy Green, and one sister, Kaylee Green, both of the home; maternal grandparents, Barb and Rich McConnell, Independence, Mo.; and paternal grandparents, Mary and Dave Hilton, Raytown, Mo., and Kenneth and Ovena Green, Kansas City, Mo. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 19, at Lawson Baptist Church in Lawson, Mo. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 18, at the church. Eleanor Neth Haire, 84, Kearney, Mo., died Tuesday, May 25, 2010. In addition to her parents, Ms. Haire was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Theresa. Survivors include her daughters, Patty Peterman, Susan Mick and Vickie Cundiff; her brother, Floyd Neth; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren with another due in November. *Melvin Harris
Melvin C. Harris, 67, of rural Orrick, Mo., passed away Thursday, May 20, 2010, at his home. Melvin was born in Orrick, Mo., on June 22, 1942, to Melvin E. and Frances (Summers) Harris. He was a lifelong resident of the Orrick area, and a graduate of Orrick High School with the class of 1960. On Aug. 10, 1963, in a ceremony in Excelsior Springs, Melvin was united in marriage to Patricia Childers. He had worked as a diesel technician for Kansas City Freightliners for 30 years and retired in April 2010. He was a member of the Machinist Union Local #778. Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Jonathon Willis Harris; and grandsons, Jonathon Eugene Harris and Derek Rash. Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Pat, of the home; his children, Cynthia Cox of Richmond, Mo., Gene Harris of Orrick, Mo., Clint Harris of Excelsior Springs, Mo., Christie Rash of Edgerton, Mo., Lassandra Harris of Excelsior Springs, Mo., and Anthony Harris of Orrick, Mo.; his siblings, John Harris of Orrick, Mo., Wanda Bernard of Chillicothe, Mo., Nina Clark of Orrick, Mo., and Rita Dever of Liberty, Mo.; grandchildren, Paul Jr., Chester, Christopher Jewell, Nick, Amanda, Brandon, Courtney, Laura, Colorado, Madyson, Cody, Mackenzie, Lane, Griffen and Tuff; and great-grandchildren, Jonathon Harris and Haylie Rash. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 25, at Gowing Funeral Home in Orrick. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 26, at Gowing Funeral Home in Orrick. Douglas Helton
Douglas Helton, 54, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Wednesday, May 26, 2010. Mr. Helton was born June 26, 1955, in Detroit, Mich., the son of Douglas and Marguerite M. Larky Helton. He worked for Ford Motor Company. Survivors include his son, Christopher P. Helton; friend, Fay Helton; and numerous brothers and sisters. Cremation, with services at a later date. Donna Diana Hieronymus, 68, of Excelsior Springs, Mo., passed away Thursday, May 13, 2010, at Valley Manor and Rehabilitation Center in Excelsior Springs, Mo. Born May 20, 1941, in Excelsior Springs, Mo., she was the daughter of James Smitty and Hazel Kathryn (Gaines) Lynn. On Jan. 31, 1958, in Liberty, Mo., she was married to Kenneth Robert “Bob” Hieronymus, who preceded her in death Jan. 26, 2006. Also preceding her in death were her parents and one brother, Gary Dean Lynn. Surviving are three sons, Steve Hieronymus and wife, Lorindia, of Kansas City, Mo., Gary Hieronymus and wife, Andrea, of Lathrop, Mo., and Mike Hieronymus of Excelsior Springs, Mo.; three brothers, Jimmy Lynn and wife, Joyce, of Excelsior Springs, Mo., Rex Baxter of Excelsior Springs, Mo., and Rodney Baxter of Lawson, Mo.; three sisters, Pam Hartman and husband, Jack, of Lawson, Mo., Ahnawake Saxton and husband, Marvin, of Independence, Mo., and Stephanie Jordan of Smithville, Mo.; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces, nephews and extended family. Mrs. Hieronymus was a homemaker and a member of the Elks Lodge Ladies Auxiliary of Excelsior Springs. She enjoyed playing bingo and cards, especially with other residents at Colony Plaza, jigsaw puzzles and reading. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 18, at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs, Mo. Graveside services and burial will take place at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Longwood Cemetery in Longwood, Mo. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 17, at the funeral home.

Richard Allen Jackson, 67, of Lawson, Mo., passed away Friday, May 21, 2010, at Lawson Manor and Rehabilitation Center in Lawson, Mo. Born Nov. 7, 1942, in Kansas City, Mo., he was the son of William Allen and Kathryn Leah (Matthews) Jackson. On Dec. 16, 1977, in Kansas City, Mo., he was married to Karen Marie Speigle who preceded him in death on March 7, 2010. He was also preceded in death by his parents. Surviving are his five children, Dawn Jones and husband, Rick, of Windsor, Mo., Dean Stupp of Liberty, Mo., Kathy Ford and husband, Dave, of Independence, Mo., Matt Jackson and wife, Amber, of Rayville, Mo., and Laura Romazon and husband, Josh, of Lawson, Mo.; two sisters, Sally Thornton of Granbury, Texas, and Sharon Ensminger and husband, Bob, of Kansas City, Mo.; eight grandchildren, Ashley Hubbard, Markus Burns, Stephanie Johnson, Sandra Stupp, Katie Holman, Kylah Jackson, Arissa Jackson and Cooper Jackson; his mother-in-law, Bessie Speigle of Independence, Mo., and several nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Richard was a 1961 graduate of Raytown High School. After graduation he enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving from 1961 to 1965. He was stationed at Lackland AFB in Texas and Chanute AFB in Illinois, receiving training in weather radar. Following his honorable discharge, Richard worked as a copier technician and manager for Xerox, Mita and Allen Copier Equipment Services. For several years he lived in Wyoming, where he owned a motel and served as a hunting and fishing guide before moving back to the Kansas City area. He retired in 2004 after being a pawn broker/business owner for 17 years in Lexington, MO. He also built Heritage Square Mall in Lexington. Mr. Jackson was a member of the NRA, North American Hunting Club, VFW, American Legion and the Elks Lodge of Lexington, Mo., as well as the Masonic Lodge of Raytown, the Republican Party, the National Pawnbrokers Association and the Blue Ridge United Methodist Church in Raytown, Mo. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 27, at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs, Mo. Burial with full military honors will follow at Richmond Memory Gardens in Richmond, Mo. Peter “Pancho” John Jancich Jr., 64, Butler, Mo. (formerly of Kansas City, Kan., died Thursday, May 13, 2010, at his home. Mr. Jancich was born Oct. 1, 1945, the son of Peter and Betty Bob (Casteel) Jancich. He had several passions, including designing and building bridges, furniture and cars. Marjorie B. King, 78, Richmond, Mo., died Tuesday, May 25, 2010, at Ray County Memorial Hospital in Richmond. Mrs. King was born June 9, 1931, in Camden, the daughter of Arthur J. and Mayme (Welchel) Shelton. She was married to Delbert F. King on April 7, 1946; he preceded her in death on Dec. 26, 2006. She was an inspector at Lake City Arsenal for 20 years before retiring in 1988. She lived in the Camden and Richmond areas most of her life. She was a Baptist. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Donald F. King; and two brothers, Junior L. Shelton and Marvin E. Shelton. Survivors include two daughters, Joyce Jellum and Judy Rash, both of Richmond; two grandchildren, Phillip Calvert and Angela Dujakovich; four stepgrandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and eight stepgreat-grandchildren. Helen Mary (Maloney) Lauhon, 93, Raytown, Mo., died Friday, May 14, 2010, at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Kansas City, Mo. Ms. Lauhon was born March 21, 1917, in Kansas City, the daughter of George Maloney and Mary Schumacher. She met and married Thomas B. Lauhon in 1937, and they lived together first in Baltimore, Md., then in Catlettsburg, Ashland and Hazard, Ky. After World War II, they moved to the Kansas City area, settling in Raytown. She was a 50-year active member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Raytown. She retired from her working career at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Kansas City, Kan. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas B. Lauhon, in 1988. Survivors include four children, Mary Diane Roberts, Polo, Carol A. Evans, Gardner, Kan., Thomas G. Lauhon, Lansing, Kan., and John P. Lauhon, Kingsville; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. A viewing will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 22, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, immediately followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m., also at the church. Interment will be in Mt. Bessie Ophelia (Cooper) Mabery, age 71, of Excelsior Springs, Mo., passed from this life on May 7, 2010, at the Excelsior Springs Hospital. Bessie was born July 26, 1938, the daughter of Alonzo C. Cooper and Fannie O. (Bowman) Cooper. Bessie was preceded in death by her parents; spouses, Grant Bradshaw and William Mabery; three siblings, Clarence W. Cooper, Barbara A. Taylor and Alonzo C. Cooper Jr.; and a child, Betsy Ann Bradshaw, who died in infancy. To cherish her memory Bessie leaves her longtime companion, Edward Porter; four children, Grant Bradshaw Jr. (Eleanor Louise “Lou”), Larry Bradshaw (Elizabeth Hozalski “Liz”), Melissa “Lisa” Matthews (Joe Barajas) and William Mabery Jr.; a son-in-law, Andrew Matthews; a daughter-in-law, Rhonda Pettus; 15 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. Mitchell Mosier
Mitchell L. Mosier, 60, Excelsior Springs, Mo., passed away Monday, May 31, 2010. Mr. Mosier was born Nov. 12, 1949. He graduated from Excelsior Springs High School and entered the United States Marine Corps. He was deployed to Vietnam in 1970.
He was preceded in death by his stepbrother, John Mosier. Survivors include his mother, Della Clevenger; his son, Eric Lane; brothers, Gene Mosier and Dale Edwards; sister, Lizzy Brawdy; three grandchildren; one niece; and three nephews. James “Buck” Murphy, 88, Kearney, Mo., departed this life at Liberty Hospital on May 18, 2010. He was born in Tennessee to parents Willie Raymond and Nora Hazel Murphy, who preceded him in death along with three brothers and one sister. Buck leaves his wife, Myrt Murphy, of the home; sons, Jerry Maxwell (Carla) of Kearney, Jeff Murphy (Carrie) of Florida and Stacey Murphy (Teresa) of Liberty, Mo. He leaves eight grandchildren, Jason, Justin and Kylee Maxwell, Jessica Millie (Donnie), Jaxson and Aaron Murphy, and Tyler and Corey Murphy; one brother, Jack; and one sisterl, Shirley Ann. Louise Roberts, 80, Harrisonville, Mo., died Tuesday, May 25, 2010, at her home.
Ms. Roberts was born Dec. 20, 1929, in New Orleans, La., the daughter of Robert H. and Vina Elafair (Yates) Stewart. She was married to William “Mack” Emanuel Roberts on June 5, 1952. She had lived in Independence, Mo., for 26 years, then lived in the Warsaw, Mo., area for 17 years before moving to Harrisonville. She was a key punch operator for Montgomery Ward in Kansas City, and later managed the catalog department. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Mack, on Aug. 2, 2009. Survivors include three sons, Eddie Roberts, Midland, Texas, Jeffery Roberts, Kearney, Mo., and Drew Roberts, Harrisonville; two daughters, Kaylene Kemper, Abilene, Texas, and Vickie Vaugh, Harrisonville; one brother, Rev. Robert H. Stewart Jr., El Paso, Texas; two sisters, Earlene Jones, Midland, Texas, and Bobbie Jean Stewart, Abilene, Texas; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Joe Rogers
Clifford Joe Rogers, 94, died Thursday, May 6, 2010, in Cameron, Mo. Mr. Rogers was born Sept. 9, 1915, in the McLouth, Kan., area. He was married to Judy Bratcher in 1940, and they lived in Kansas City, Birmingham, Garden City, Jamesport, Cowgill and Orrick before returning to Kansas City in 1993. He worked for Standard Steel in North Kansas city before he retired. He was a member of Winnwood Baptist Church. He lived at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cameron at the time of his death. In addition to his mother and stepfather, Birdie Adams Pettit and Albert Pettit, he was preceded in death by his wife, Judy Rogers, in 2002; a sister, Mary Coombs; a brother, Hiram Pettit; and four stepsisters. Survivors include four children, John, Holt, Gary, Camden, Sharon, Independence, and Jim, Wellsville, Kan.; a sister, Ruth Williams, Topeka, Kan.; a brother, John Henry Pettit; 13 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. “Duke” Schwarzel
Donald David “Duke” Schwarzel, 74, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Friday, May 28, 2010, at his home. Mr. Schwarzel was born Nov. 11, 1935, in Excelsior Springs, the son of William Everhart and Cleopatra (King) Schwarzel. He was married to Beverly Ann Rowland on Sept. 6, 1964; she survives. He was reared in Excelsior Springs, graduating in 1954. After serving in the United States Army from 1958 to 1960, he went to California, where he worked with his brother as a heavy equipment operator for 14 years. He returned to Excelsior Springs and purchased the former Pepsi plant, which he turned into Fishing River Storage Place. He was also a contract carrier for the Kansas City Star for 30 years. Duke was baptized into the Presbyterian faith as a child. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Malcolm Williams, John “Jack” Schwarzel and Mike Schwarzel; and three sisters, Betty McCauley, Gretchen Souter and Pat Hill. In addition to his wife, survivors include two children, Stephen Smith, Wood Heights, and Susan Poor, Excelsior Springs; one brother, William R. “Pete” Schwarzel, Lawson; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren, Sara Smith, Haley Smith an. A memorial service will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 2, at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Terry Ray Shoemaker, 43, rural Orrick, Mo., died Wednesday, May 5, 2010, at his home.
Mr. Shoemaker was born Sept. 22, 1966, in Kansas City, Mo. He had lived most of his life in the Kansas City area and the Excelsior Springs area before moving to Orrick three years ago. He had been a waiter for Waffle House restaurants in Kansas City. Survivors include his father, William Kinne, Lowry City; his mother, Gloria Newman, Orrick; brothers, William Kinne III, California, and Richard Kinne, Knoxville; sisters, Angela Shoemaker, Richmond, and Misty Coles and Dixie Shelton, both of Orrick; and his grandparents, William and Betty Shoemaker, Excelsior Springs. Max L. Snider, 80, Excelsior Springs, Mo., passed away Monday, May 2, 2010, at his home. Max was born on Aug. 16, 1929, in Altamonte, Mo., the son of Leslie and Edith (Sheelor) Snider. He was a graduate of Gallatin High School. He was married to Camilla (Cameron) Snider, who survives of the home. Max worked as a dry cleaner and a tailor. He owned and operated Bond Cleaners in Excelsior Springs for more than 24 years. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Excelsior Springs, was president of the Second Milers Club of the church for many years, and was a member of the Excelsior Springs Garden Club. He was a Mason for more than 57 years. He was a member of the Clay Lodge #209 A.F. & A.M. of Excelsior Springs and was Past Master of Lodge #481 A.F. & A.M in Marceline, Mo. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Gayle Watson; and one brother, J.D. Snider. In addition to his wife, Camilla, Max is survived by one daughter, Cynthia Dean, of Excelsior Springs, Mo.; one son, David Snider, of Parkville, Mo.; two sisters, Mary Shepard and Shirley Lukehart, both of Gallatin, Mo.; and two grandchildren, Brian Dean and wife, Kristen, and Lesley Hankins and husband, Ryan. Shelley Lynn Stephens, age 55, of Lawson, Mo., lost her courageous battle with breast cancer and passed away on Wednesday, May 5, 2010, at her home. Born Dec. 18, 1954, in Independence, Mo., she was the daughter of Gary Francis and Betty Jean (Scott) Larson. On April 25, 1981, in Independence, Mo., she was married to Mark Paul Stephens, who survives. Also surviving are her two children, Erryn Stephens and Corey Stephens, both of Lawson, Mo.; her father, Gary Larson of Warsaw, Mo.; three sisters, Bonnie Clifford and husband, Ron, of Liberty, Mo., Paula Rice and husband, Cleo, of Grain Valley, Mo., and Risa Larson of Lake Viking, Mo.; one brother, Michael Larson and wife, Rhonda, of Oak Grove, Mo.; two grandsons, Carson Stephens and Cavin Stephens; and several nieces, nephews and her extended family. She was preceded in death by her mother, Betty Larson, in 2004. Shelley was raised in Independence, Mo., attending public schools and graduating from Truman High School in 1973. She held various jobs until going to work for Hallmark in 1978, where she was employed at the time of her death in the graphics department. Mrs. Stephens was a member of the Lawson United Methodist Church and the Women of Hope support group for breast cancer. She enjoyed cooking, her horses and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 8, at Lawson United Methodist Church in Lawson. Dr. John H. Teale, 78, Excelsior Springs, Mo., passed away Tuesday, May 11, 2010, at the Excelsior Springs Hospital. Dr. Teale was born on Sept. 20, 1931, in Kansas City, Mo., the son of Herbert Shepherd and Mildred (Johnson) Teale. He served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1949-1953. On August 22, 1972, he Married Shirley (Grass) Teale, who survives of the home. He was a graduate of Drexel High School, Drexel, Mo. He attended Kansas City Junior College for Business Administration and then attended Cleveland Chiropractic College, graduating with a Doctor of Chiropractic degree. He also attended Columbia College for a degree in Bionutrition and received his certification in acupuncture from the Acupuncture Society of America. He was a chiropractor starting out in Oregon, Mo., then moved his practice to Excelsior Springs, Mo., and had Excelsior Springs Chiropractic for more than 30 years. He had served on the Missouri State Chiropractors Association as President, First Vice President, Second Vice President, Chairman of the Political Action Committee, and Chairman of the Legal Committee. He was a member of the Federation of Licensing Boards, had served as President and Secretary of the Missouri State Board of Chiropractic Examiners, had served as Mayor and City Council member for the city of Excelsior Springs, was Past President of the Excelsior Springs Job Corps Citizens Advisory Board, and was Past President or the Excelsior Springs Rotary Club. He had received various awards during his career, including MSCA Chiropractor of the Year in 1982, MSCA Presidential Award in 1989, MSCA District 2 Pioneer Award in 1993, and City of Excelsior Springs Appreciation Award in 1993. Besides his wife, Shirley, he is survived by one son, John Teale and wife, Erin, of Excelsior Springs, Mo.; two daughters, Laura Jo Ullom and husband, Ridley, of Colorado and Avril Teale of California; one sister, Josephine Cash of Independence, Mo.; and four grandchildren, Braden Teale, Christopher Ullom, Jessica Ullom and Shannon Teale. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 17, at Polley Funeral Home, Excelsior Springs, Mo. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, May 16, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Excelsior Springs, Mo. Charles Vredenburg
Charles Bernley Vredenburg, 91, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Saturday, May 29, 2010, at Excelsior Springs Hospital. Mr. Vredenburg was born Jan. 25, 1919, in Pisgah, Iowa, the son of James M. and Nina G. (Kemmish) Vredenburg. He had been employed in several industrial jobs, and nearing the end of the Great Depression he worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps in the western states. During World War II he built B-52 bomber tails in Claycomo, Mo. Later he was employed by Corning Fiberglass in Fairfax, from where he retired after 35 years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Lucille, and his second wife, Sadie; two brothers, Kenneth Vredenburg and Donald Vredenburg; and one sister, Dorothy Trainor. Survivors include a stepson, John Fisher, Excelsior Springs; three stepdaughters, Dorothy Burnham, Wheatridge, Colo., Betty Knapp, Silverthorne, Colo., and Bonnie Evers, Longmont, Colo.; one brother, Amos Vredenburg, Powell, Wyo.; one sister, Ila Graham, Eagleville, Mo.; and many stepgrandchildren and great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday, June 13, at the Community of Christ Church in Excelsior Springs, with visitation at the church one hour prior to the service. David E. Ward
David Earl Ward, 63, Pleasant Hill, Mo., died Thursday, May 27, 2010, at his home. Mr. Ward was born Sept. 21, 1946, in Grundy County, Mo., the son of Marion Roe and Goldie Fae (Miller) Ward. He was reared in Grundy County and was a Vietnam veteran, serving eight years in the United States Navy. Later he became a civilian contractor in Washington, D.C., as a boiler technician. In 1994 he retired and moved to the Lake of the Ozarks, where he resided until moving to Pleasant Hill nearly two years ago. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Wetzel Ward and Junior Ward. Survivors include three children, Steven Ward,. Bracey, Va., Phillip Ward, Pleasant Hill, and Michelle Wheeler, LaCrosse, Va.; four sisters, Ann, San Diego, Calif., Sarah, Trenton, Mo., Lois Jean Oliver, Fredericksburg, Va., and Deloris, Independence, Mo.; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Graveside services with military honors will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 1, at Hillcrest Cemetery in Excelsior Springs, Mo. There is no public visitation. Arrangements are through Polley Funeral Home of Excelsior Springs.
Judy Weathers
Judy Carol Cain Weathers, 66, Liberty, Mo., died Monday, May 17, 2010. Mrs. Weathers was born July 27, 1943, near Cainsville, the daughter of Fred and Nellie (Johnson) Cain. She was a past sixth district Democratic representative and a former member of the Clay County Democratic Central Committee. She had served as co-chair of the Northland United Way. She was a member of Liberty United Methodist Church. Survivors include her husband of 48 years, K. Russell Weathers; three children, Kent Weathers, Joy Weathers-Hetzler and Vince Weathers; a brother, Dan Cain; and four grandchildren. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, May 22, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m., both at Liberty United Methodist Church. A graveside ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. at the Zoar Cemetery in Cainsville. Arrangements are through Park Lawn Northland Chapel in Liberty. Memorial contributions may be made to the Judy Weathers Memorial Scholarship through the DT Chapter of the PEO Sisterhood. Barbara White
Barbara June White, 76, Richmond, Mo., died Monday, May 31, 2010, due to injuries from a car accident. Services were set for 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 4, at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond. Visitation was held from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 3, at the funeral home. Burial in Cowgill Cemetery in Cowgill. Memorial contributions may be made to the Arthritis Foundation.
Joyce Wolfe
Joyce Wolfe, 65, Henrietta, Mo., died Thursday, May 6, 2010. Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 10, at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond; burial in Richmond Memory Gardens. Visitation was held from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, with an OES service at 10:30 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Henrietta Baptist Church.
