* “Andy” Anderson
Everett E. “Andy” Anderson, 86, Kearney, Mo., passed away on Thursday, May 7, 2009, at Valley Manor Rehabilitation Center in Excelsior Springs, Mo., after a long battle with cancer. Andy was born Nov. 25, 1922, in Windsor, Mo. He worked for General Motors for 30 years and retired in 1976. He served in World War II. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW and IOOF. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Dolores; daughters, Gwen Grapes (Ron), Versailles, Mo., and Connie Vaughn (Todd) and Jerry Mitchell (Bob), both of Kearney; a son, Tom Anderson (Rona), Kearney; nine grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, one brother and one granddaughter. Andy enjoyed horses and being at the Lake. He was a devoted family man and will be sorely missed by his family and friends until we all meet again. Visitation was held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 11, at Fry, Bross & Spidle Funeral Home in Kearney; services were set for 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 12, also at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the Valley Manor Rehabilitation Center Activity Fund, 1410 Hospital Dr., Excelsior Springs, MO 64024.

Wanda Blanton
Wanda Lee (Greathouse) Blanton, 76, Kansas City, Mo., died Tuesday, May 5, 2009. Ms. Blanton was born Jan. 20, 1933, in Kansas City. She was a homemaker and lived in south Kansas City and Belton. In addition to her parents, Anna and Victor Halstead, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Cathy Hartsock. Survivors include her children, Vickie O'Dell, Lawson, Susan Schindler, Gladstone, Jan Lockard, Harrisonville, Jeff Greathouse, Granby, and Robin Cope, Raymore; 19 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 9, at Southland Baptist Church in Belton, followed by services at 11 a.m. Arrangements are through McGilley-George Funeral Home in Grandview.

Gail V. Burris
Gail Victor Burris, 76, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Tuesday, May 19, 2009, at the Excelsior Springs Convalescent Center. Mr. Burris was born Aug. 28, 1932, in Malvern, Ark., the son of Emmett Victor and Verna (Williams) Burris. He was married to Shirley Jean Goade on Feb. 15, 1958; she survives. He had been employed by General Baking Company, had worked in construction and worked for the city of Kansas City in pollution control. He had also worked for Whitaker Cable and for several years worked at the Kearney Truck Stop until his retirement in the early 1980s. He was of the Methodist faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a stepbrother, Everett Radcliffe. In addition to his wife, survivors include one daughter, Vickie Burris Vause, Lawson; one sister, Betty Hall, Excelsior Springs; one stepbrother, Alan Burris, Colorado; and two stepsisters, Faye Radcliffe, Malvern, Ark., and Marilyn Carll, Avondale, Ariz. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 22, at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. Visitation will follow the service until 3:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Excelsior Springs Convalescent Center.

Carol Campbell
Carol Eileen Campbell, 71, Kansas City, Mo., died Saturday, May 16, 2009. Ms. Campbell was born Feb. 24, 1938, in Kansas City, Kan., the daughter of Ernest and Gladys Curtis. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Cindy Kay Parsons. Survivors include a sister, Dorothy Breedlove, Kansas City, Kan.; brother, Dale R. Curtis, Excelsior Springs, Mo.; son, Kenneth R. Parsons, Independence, Mo.; daughters, Linda K. Bradford, Pleasant Hill, Mo., and Cheryl L. Meister, Fresno, Calif.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, at Newcomer’s Sons Floral Hills Chapel, where a visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 19. Burial in Floral Hills Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Wayside Waifs.

Betty Lou Casey
Betty Lou (Franklin) Casey, 80, Pleasant Valley, Mo., died Tuesday, May 5, 2009. Ms. Casey was born April 23, 1929, in Odessa, the daughter of Robert Benjamin and Blanche (Durbin) Franklin. She went to work in 1959 in Community Health Service at the Clay County Health Department. She retired from there in 1991 after serving as head of the WIC program. She was married to Stanley Morrison Casey on June 11, 1959. She was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley Casey, on Nov. 29, 2004; her father, Robert Franklin, in 1936; her mother, Blanche Franklin Bowers, in 1991; and her stepfather, Joseph H. Bowers, in 1977. Survivors include four children, Stanley Casey, Pleasant Valley, Donnell Cross, Kansas City North, Tracy Pangborn, Liberty, and Timothy Casey, Richmond; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and other relatives. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 8, at Park Lawn Northland Chapel in Liberty. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 9, at the chapel. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Greenton Cemetery, north of Odessa.

Charles Cates
Charles Robert Cates, 75, Kansas City, Mo., died Sunday, May 24, 2009, at St. Joseph Hospital. Mr. Cates was born June 2, 1933, in Kansas City, the son of Charles Edward and Mildred Beatrice (Smith) Cates. He was married to Shirley Joyce Swartz on Aug. 24, 1956. He was a union carpenter. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Elaine Vincent. Survivors include his wife, Shirley, of the home; one son, Randall Robert Cates, Kansas City; one daughter, Kristy Lynn Bircher, Excelsior Springs; two sisters, Mary Jane Proffitt, Nevada, Mo., and Winona Lewis, Scottsdale, Ariz.; and two grandchildren. Funeral services and visitation were held Thursday, May 28, at Schell City Christian Church in Schell City; burial in Green Lawn Cemetery in Schell City. Memorial contributions may be made to the Schell City Community Betterment Fund.

Ruth Coffman
Ruth Alta Coffman, 75, died Monday, May 18, 2009, at her home. Ms. Coffman was born Dec. 19, 1933, in Vrooman Acres in Clay County, Mo., the daughter of Ruth Dana (Carr) and Buford Wayne Chinn. She was a retired congressional caseworker. She lived in North Kansas City and Gladstone most of her life, and was a lifelong member of Northminster Presbyterian Church in Kansas City. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Coffman. Survivors include sons, Ron Coffman and Richard Coffman, both of Gladstone; sister, Maxine Hiel, Kearney; sister-in-law, Marcha Tietjen, Excelsior Springs; and two grandchildren. Visitation was held Thursday, May 21, at White Chapel Funeral Home in Gladstone. Services were set for 2 p.m. Friday, May 22, at the chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Diabetes Association.

Timothy Corum
Timothy L. Corum, 58, Liberty, Mo., died Friday, May 1, 2009. Survivors include two brothers, Scott Corum and Randy Corum; and two nieces, Cecilia Corum and Maggie Corum. Cremation. Arrangements are through Fry-Bross & Spidle Funeral Home in Kearney.

Mary Kathryn Crawford
Mary Kathryn Crawford, 60, Kearney, Mo., died Sunday, May 17, 2009, at her home. Ms. Crawford was born Jan. 1, 1949, in Kearney, the daughter of Frank Jr. and Aulta Mautino. She had been a quality assurance inspector for Grainger INc. She started the Kearney Fire Auxiliary in 1972, and was a member of Northern Hills Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Marvin Leon Mautino; and a sister, Vera Paterson. Survivors include her husband, Ralph "Butch" Crawford, of the home; two daughters, Kandi Patterson, Kansas City, and Christina Renae Riner, Amity; a son, William "BJ" Crawford, Excelsior Springs; a sister, Jacquelyn Rose Brotherton, Kingston, Wisc.; and five grandchildren. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 23, at Northern Hills Baptist Church; burial at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Kearney.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 22, at Fry, Bross & Spidle Funeral Home in Kearney. Memorial contributions may be made to Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City.

*Rev. Don D. Crowley
Rev. Don D. Crowley, 78, of Rayville, Mo., died Friday, May 15, 2009, atthe Excelsior Springs Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in ExcelsiorSprings, Mo. Rev. Crowley was born on June 21, 1930, near Rayville, Mo., to Millard Earl and Obie Jane (Rice) Crowley. He married Aletha Allene Banning of Excelsior Springs, Mo., on Oct. 21, 1950; she survives of the home. Additional survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, David and Becki Crowley, Excelsior Springs; one sister, Billie Segrist, Cincinnati, Ohio; three grandchildren and their spouses, Matthew and Kelley Crowley, Drew and Jana Crowley, and Elizabeth and Bobby Smith; seven great-grandchildren, Larren, Taylor, Kyli and Bayli Crowley, Cole Connor and Eli and Laney Smith. In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by one brother, Edgar "Jimmy" Miley; one sister, Connie Beltram; and one grandson, Jacob Crowley. Rev. Crowley was a United States Navy Veteran. He attended the Kansas City Bible College. He pastored for more than 40 years, ministering at the Bethel Christian Union Church, St. Paul Christian Union Church, Richmond Christian Union Church and retiring at the Rayville Christian Union Church because of injuries sustained in an automobile accident in 1994. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Rayville Christian Union Church. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 20, at Rayville Christian Union Church. Visitation will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, at the church. Burial will be in the Crowley Cemetery near Rayville, Mo. Arrangements are through Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond, Mo.

Zannie Davenport
Zannie Mae Davenport, 90, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Sunday, May 31, 2009, at the Excelsior Springs Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Excelsior Springs, Mo. Ms. Davenport was born May 4, 1919, in Rayville, the daughter of Wade Hampton and Emma May (O’Dell) McGinnis. She was married to Walter G. Davenport on Aug. 29, 1938; he preceded her in death on Feb. 22, 1982. She was raised in Rayville, where she attended Rayville public schools. Following her marriage she was a homemaker and raised her children. She worked as a cook at Isley School for six years and had also worked in the Westview School kitchen and at J.J. Newberry’s. She was a member of Excelsior Springs First Assembly of God Church in Excelsior Springs. In addition to her husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by five sisters and one brother. Survivors include four children, Wanda Lee, Excelsior Springs, Don Davenport, Independence, Phyllis Blacksher, Excelsior Springs, and Rod Davenport, Liberty; one sister, Thelma Scott, Excelsior Springs; eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 3, at the Excelsior Springs First Assembly of God Church. Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 2, at the church. Arrangements are through Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. Memorial contributions may be made to the church.

Alice DeMoss
Alice L. Webber DeMoss, 95, Plattsburg, Mo., died Saturday, May 30, 2009, at Liberty Hospital in Liberty, Mo. Ms. DeMoss was born Nov. 14, 1913. She was married to Charles DeMoss on May 21, 1933; he preceded her in death in December 1989. She was a homemaker and was also the oldest member of First Baptist Church of Plattsburg. In addition to her parents, William and Olivia Webber, and her husband, she was preceded in death by six brothers, Rex Webber, Virgil Webber, Jack Webber, Brick Webber, L.M. Webber and Clarence Webber; two sisters, Evelyn Taylor and Mary Hellen Askren; two sons, Thomas DeMoss and David DeMoss; a daughter, Mary Ruth Wade; and a grandson, Wade Jackson Wilhoit. Survivors include 11 grandchildren, including Phyllis Kage, Kearney, and Sharon DeMoss, Lathrop; 14 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were set for 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 2, at First Baptist Church in Plattsburg. Interment in Green Lawn Cemetery in Plattsburg. The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 1, at Bailey & Cox Family Funeral Service in Plattsburg.

Wilma Deuser
Wilma Jean Deuser, 79, Lawson, Mo., died Saturday, May 23, 2009, at her home. Ms. Deuser was born Dec. 30, 1929, in Dodge City, Kan., the daughter of Raymond and Elva Rose (McCune) Davis. Following her marriage, she raised her family and also worked in various employments of business management. She became a real estate broker and owned and operated Fax Realty for 20 years before retiring three years ago. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband in 1967; and her life partner, Zay Hill, on Dec. 17, 1997. Survivors include two daughters, Karen Dolt and Laura Boxford, both of Lawson; one brother, Roy Lee Benjamin, Emporia, Kan.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 28, at the Benton Cemetery in Benton, Kan. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 27, at Polley Funeral Home in Lawson. Memorial contributions may be made to Northland Healthcare Access.

*Frankie Dravenstott
Frankie Lee Dravenstott, 74, Excelsior Springs, Mo., passed away Tuesday, May 12, 2009, at the Excelsior Springs Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Mr. Dravenstott was born Dec. 13, 1934, in Henrietta, Mo., before moving to Excelsior Springs at infancy. He was the son of Charles E. and Georgia (Mallory) Dravenstott. He married Pamela S. Parker Aug. 7, 1963, in El Paso, Texas. Frankie was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, and was a member of the Clay-Ray Veterans Club, where he was on the board of directors, head of flag detail and a member of the Honor Guard. He and Pam owned and operated Dravenstott Construction for 35 years before retiring in 2001.  Frankie is survived by his wife, Pam, of the home; his son, Vernon Lee, Excelsior Springs; daughters, Linda Lee Salisbury, Liberty, Mo., and Tamela Jean Grembocki, Lenexa, Kan.; granddaughters, Stephanie Winn Hass and Stacey Lee Salisbury, Kearney, Mo.; grandson, Trystan Nicholas Grembocki, Lenexa, Kan.; sisters, Lois Werle, Orrick, Mo., and Georgia Gunther and husband, Larry, Lee1s Summit, Mo.; and brothers, Charles Dravenstott and wife, Mary Ann, Excelsior Springs, Mo., and Lonnie Dravenstott and wife, Larenda, Lawson, Mo. In addition to his parents, Frankie was preceded in death by three sisters, Goldie Kirkhoff, Silvia Dagley and Mary Pollard; and two brothers, Gene Dravenstott and Willie Dravenstott.  A graveside service for Frankie will be held at noon on Friday, May 15, at Hillcrest Cemetery in Excelsior Springs, Mo. He will lie in state until 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 14, at the Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs, Mo., so that friends may pay their respects. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion Post 236 Honor Guard Fund. 

Carl Eisele
Carl R. Eisele died Thursday, May 28, 2009. Mr. Eisele was born in 1923 and spent all his life in the Kansas City area. He served in the U.S. Navy, stationed in the South Pacific during World War II. After the war he returned to the Midwest, where he trained as an accountant and worked at United Film Service and at the Probate Court of Jackson County, Mo. He was a member of Unity Church in Overland Park, Kan. He was preceded in death by one son, Dana Eisele. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Fern Eisele, Overland Park, Kan.; a son, Robert Eisele, Liberty, Mo.; and two grandchildren, Drew Mason, Fort Collins, Colo., and Derek Mason, Boulder, Colo. A celebration of his life was held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 1, at Unity Church in Overland Park, Kan. Friends were invited to call from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the church. Graveside services followed at Johnson County Memorial Gardens in Overland Park. Memorial contributions may be made to Animal Haven or Unity Church of Overland Park.

“Jim” Galle
James C. “Jim” Galle, 79, Richmond, Mo., died Sunday, May 31, 2009. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 3, at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond; burial in Richmond Memory Gardens. Visitation will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 2, at the funeral home.

Frances Gooch
Frances L. Gooch, 92, Orrick, Mo., died Monday, May 11, 2009, at North Kansas City Hospital in North Kansas City, Mo. Mrs. Gooch was born March 6, 1917, in Orrick, the daughter of Sam and Allie (Canada) Vance. She was married to Keith E. Gooch on Nov. 9, 1943. Survivors include two daughters, Sally Vick and Julie Goetz, both of Orrick; five grandchildren; and four great-granddaughters. She was preceded in death by her husband, Keith E. Gooch, in June 2002; a son, Stephen K. Gooch; two sisters, Mary Kay Sanderson and Jewel L. Pigg; and a brother, Ben F. Vance.Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 13, at Orrick United Methodist Church; burial in South Point Cemetery in Orrick. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 12, at Gowing Chapel in Orrick.

Phyllis Green
Phyllis Kendall Green, 66, Kearney, Mo., died Tuesday, May 5, 2009. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 9, at Richmond United Methodist Church in Richmond. Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church. Inurnment will take place at a later date in Woodland Cemetery in Des Moines, Iowa. Arrangements are through Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond.

Newton Hamacher
Newton Clark Hamacher, 89, Richmond, Mo., died Wednesday, May 27, 2009. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 30, at the United Christian Presbyterian Church in Richmond, with military services by American Legion Post #237 and Richmond VFW Post #4398. Visitation will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 29, at Thurman Funeral home in Richmond.

Gladys Hartman
Gladys Wonetta Hartman, 87, Rayville, Mo., died Sunday, May 3, 2009, at the Excelsior Springs Convalescent Center in Excelsior Springs, Mo. Mrs. Hartman was born Sept. 11, 1921, in Rayville, the daughter of Arthur and Katie Pearl (King) Ulmer. She was married to Clarence E. Hartman on Dec. 26, 1937; he preceded her in death Aug. 27, 1979. She was a lifelong resident of the Rayville community. She was a homemaker, a farm wife and raised her family. For a brief time she had worked at Linda Lane garment factory and at the Y Café. She was also known in the local communities as the pie lady and the egg lady. In addition to her husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Kenneth Hartman, on Dec. 12, 2004; one sister, Eunice Hartman; one brother in infancy; and a grandson, Mark Hartman, on Oct. 3, 2008. Survivors include three children, Roy Hartman, Rayville, Myrtle Cox, Excelsior Springs, and Joyce Anderson, Columbia, Tenn.; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 7, at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. Burial will be in the Old Union Cemetery near Lawson. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Thelma Hartsock
Thelma Hartsock, 97, died Saturday, May 23, 2009, at Bishop Spencer Place in Kansas City, Mo. Ms. Hartsock was born April 10, 1912, in Saskatchewan, Canada, and came to Iowa with her husband, Joe, in 1930. She became a U.S. citizen in 1941 and retired to Excelsior Springs, Mo., in 1978. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Joe Crippen and Frank Hartsock; and one daughter, Connie Besold. Survivors include four daughters, Kathleen Hartsock, Joanne Spence, Margaret Pilcher and Faith Baldwin; 16 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren. A celebration of life will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 6, at Bishop Spencer Chapel. Arrangements are through Cremation Society of Kansas & Missouri. Memorial contributions may be made to Bishop Spencer Place or St. Luke’s Hospice.

*Louise Hatfield
S. Louise Hatfield, 81, Rayville, Mo. (formerly of Holden, Mo., and Warrensburg, Mo.), died Thursday, May 21, 2009, at her home. Louise was born April 9, 1928, in Shawnee, Okla., the daughter of Clarence Osterloh and Maude Jones Osterloh. She married Melvin V. Hatfield on May 11, 1946. She was a Medical Technologist at Research Hospital in Kansas City for more than 20 years. Louise established Traci's Crafts in Warrensburg in 1981. She loved traveling, butterflies, her cats and all kinds of crafts. She especially enjoyed following her grandchildren's many sporting activities. Louise was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin, on Dec. 8, 1994; a granddaughter, Crystal Hyde; three brothers; and two sisters. Survivors include a son, Michael Hatfield and his wife, Jeri, Oak Grove; five daughters, Gail Kirby, Blue Springs, Dixie Morris, Lee's Summit, Phyllis Strazdas, Redding, Calif., Janice Hatfield and special friend, Jimmie Frost, Rayville, and Traci Sanders and her husband, Chris, Warrensburg; 10 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. There was a private interment in Pisgah Cemetery, south of Holden. Pallbearers were her grandsons, Duane Kirby, Chad Kirby, Tony Hilke, Shane Wyatt, Justin Hatfield, Jacob Holsey and Luke Holsey. Arrangements are through Williams Funeral Chapel in Holden.

Elaine Holsted
Joyce Elaine Holsted, 59, Lawson, Mo., died Thursday, May 7, 2009, at North Kansas City Hospital in North Kansas City, Mo.Ms. Holsted was born Sept. 10, 1949, in Cuba, Mo., the daughter of John Emory and Piney Lee (Hensley) Britton. She was married to William Lee Holsted on Jan. 27, 1968; he died Nov. 6, 2003. She was a homemaker. She had been employed with United Services in Excelsior Springs, had served as a secretary for Porth Construction for seven years and also was a certified nursing assistant at Lathrop Nursing Home. She baked cakes for more than 15 years and for three years operated Aunt Elaine’s Pantry in Lathrop. She had also worked in floral design and had been employed by Gazebo Brown and Expressions of Love florists. She was a member of Living Word Church. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Melvin Britton, Marvin Britton and infant Jimmy Dale Britton.Survivors include three sons, Marty Holsted and Matt Holsted, both of Lathrop, and Michael Holsted, Lawson, MO; one brother, Randy Britton, Brookfield; five sisters, Dolores Wendt, Vandalia, Faye Dearduff, Ferguson, Fern Lovvern, Butler, Ga., Pauline Porth, Lawson, and Carmen Buchanan, Brookfield; and four grandchildren. Funeral services were set for 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 12, at the Community Alliance Church in Lawson. Burial in the Lawson Cemetery. Visitation was held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs.

Lucy Johnson
Lucy Jane Johnson, 98, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Sunday, May 31, 2009, at Excelsior Springs Hospital in Excelsior Springs, Mo. Ms. Johnson was born Aug. 22, 1910, on a farm in Washington Township, Carroll County, Mo., the daughter of Ben R. and Maud Timbrook Davies. She completed eight grades at Hanks School, rural Dawn. She was married to Marvin Delmar Johnson on Feb. 7, 1928. They lived in rural Norborne, Utica, rural Monroe City, Vandalia and Excelsior Springs during their lives together. She was a homemaker for most of her married life, but worked a few years at the Excelsior Laundry in Excelsior Springs as a seamstress. She was baptized into Enon Baptist Church of rural Dawn while still a child, was a member of Southside Baptist Church in Vandalia and finally was a member of First Baptist Church (now Excelsior Springs Baptist Church) in Excelsior Springs for many years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Delmar Johnson, on July 10, 1989; a sister, Irene Davies; and a brother, Clifton Davies. Survivors include her sons, D. Lemar Johnson, Excelsior Springs, and Dale R. Johnson, Liberty; three granddaughters, Virginia S. McSwain, Excelsior Springs, Emily A. Cunningham, Madison, Ala., and Elinor K. Garvin, Woodbury, Minn.; and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 4, at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service, from 1 to 2 p.m. Burial will be in Enon Baptist Church Cemetery, rural Dawn.

*Jean Johnston
Doris Jean Johnston was born June 28, 1915, in a small farmhouse just outside of Excelsior Springs, Mo. She was the daughter of Thomas F. and Nancy Jane (Bales) Wilson. She began her new life May 21, 2009. On Oct. 25, 1947, Jean and Charles N. Johnston were married and began life’s journey together. They turned a house into a home and a life into celebration of love. In July of 1985, Charles stepped away from this life, but not away from Jean’s side. Those who have gone on before her are her mother, father, sister Lela, brother-in-law Nolan, brother Willard and nephew Frank. She loved them all dearly. Today, they are together again. Jean worked for the Wharton Agency in Excelsior Springs, Mo., and retired from that office. She lived all her life in Excelsior Springs and was a member of the Woods Memorial Christian Church. She is survived by her daughter, Iva, and her son-in-law, Fred Dehn. Funeral services for Jean will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 26, at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs, Mo. A visitation will be held an hour beforehand. Burial will take place at Crown Hill Cemetery in Excelsior Springs.


Roy Jones

Roy Jones, 77, Plattsburg, Mo., died Thursday, May 21, 2009, at Liberty Hospital in Liberty, Mo. Mr. Jones was born Nov. 22, 1931, in Grayson, the son of Frank and Bonnie Jones. He retired from TWA. He was preceded in death by three brothers and a grandson, Korey Mick. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Charlotte Jones; daughters, KathyLuna, Arlington, Tenn., Vicki Jones, Plattsburg; and Rita Mick, Kearney; abrother, Joe Jones, Auburn, Neb.; a sister, Margaret Johnston, Dearborn; sixgrandchildren; and 10 grandchildren.Funeral services were set for 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 26, at Bailey & CoxFamily Funeral Service in Plattsburg; interment in Stoney Point Cemetery in Trimble.

Loyd Ellsworth Kelly, 91, Kearney, Mo., died Thursday, May 14, 2009. Christy Koontz
Christy Lynn O’Dell Koontz, 39, Richmond, Mo., died Saturday, May 23, 2009, at Ray County Memorial Hospital in Richmond. Ms. Koontz was born Feb. 20, 1970, in Ray County, the daughter of Elmer Dee and Rebekah Ann (Franklin) O’Dell. She had worked as an over-the-road truck driver for Prime Trucking for several years. She was a certified nursing assistant and had worked at various nursing homes including Shirkey’s, Lexington Care Center and Royal Care Center until her health failed. She was a member of House of Joy in Richmond. In addition to her grandparents, Roy O’Dell and Veta Franklin, she was preceded in death by her husband, Stephen Koontz. Survivors include two children, Ashley Coggins, Lawson, and Nick Koontz, Excelsior Springs; her fiancé, Billy Covey, Richmond; her mother, Rebekah O’Dell, Lexington; her father, Elmer O’Dell, Richmond; two brothers, Mike O’Dell, Richmond, and John O’Dell, Lexington; one sister, Brooke Marrant, Lexington; three grandchildren; a grandmother, Izetta O’Dell Seek, Richmond; and a grandfather, Dub Franklin, Richmond. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 27, at Polley Funeral Home in Richmond. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery in Richmond. Josephine Lackey
Josephine M. Lackey, 97, Kearney, Mo., died Saturday, May 23, 2009, at New Mark Care Center in Kansas City, Mo. Mrs. Lackey was born March 17, 1912, in Hays, Kan., the daughter of Henry and Theresa (Hauser) Hertlein. She was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church in Excelsior Springs. She was a homemaker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Cleo Lackey, in 1999; and a daughter, Dolores Johnson, in 1998. Survivors include her son, John Sanders, Polo; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. Funeral mass will take place at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 26, at St. Ann Catholic Church in Excelsior Springs. Burial will be in Resurrection North Cemetery. Kevin Langhammer
Kevin Langhammer, 54, son of Betty and Maurice O'Dell, died May 18, 2009, in Bangkok, Thailand, where he was teaching English to Thai children. Mr. Langhammer was the son of Betty and Maurice O'Dell. He was preceded in death by his father, John; a sister, Cindy Houston; and a stepbrother, Tony O'Dell. Survivors include his parents; three children, Katie Mayhay, Arkansas, and April Langhammer and Christopher Langhammer, both of the Kansas City area; a sister, Beverly Kinker, Lenox, Iowa; and three stepbrothers and -sisters, David, Diane and Connie. Graveside services were held Sunday, July 5, at the O'Dell Cemetery.

Elizabeth Lytle
Elizabeth Lytle, 97, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Monday, May 25, 2009, at the Excelsior Springs Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Ms. Lytle was born March 14, 1912, in Weyburn, Saskatchewan, Canada, the daughter of Joseph Peter and Elizabeth Jacob. She was married to Donald K. Lytle on Dec. 31, 1931; he preceded her in death in 1977. She attended St. Ann Catholic Church in Excelsior Springs. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, three sisters, and one grandson. Survivors include two sons, Robert Lytle, Excelsior Springs, and Donald K. Lytle, Amboy, Ill.; one daughter, Janet Combs, Paw Paw, Ill.; and eight grandchildren. There is no scheduled family visitation, but friends may call anytime after 3 p.m. Wednesday, May at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. Graveside services will be held in Lee, Ill., at a later date.

Mary Mallory
Mary Mallory, 73, Kansas City, Mo., died Tuesday, May 5, 2009. Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Russell Mallory, of the home; five children, including Sandra Loving, Excelsior Springs; one sister; two brothers; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services were set for 11 a.m. Friday, May 8, at White Chapel Funeral Home in Gladstone. Visitation will be held during the hour before the service at the funeral home.

David Mapes
David Lee Mapes, 62, Independence, Mo., died Tuesday, May 12, 2009, at Lawson Manor and Rehabilitation Center in Lawson, Mo.  Mr. Mapes was born Oct. 27, 1946, in Louisiana, the son of William and Daisy (Barr) Mapes. He worked at the General Motors Fairfax plant for 30 years.  He is preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his daughters, Shelly Mapes, Excelsior Springs, and Kim Mapes, Independence; sons, Jesse and Brian Mapes, Independence; 14 brothers and sisters; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.  A funeral service will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, May 15, at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. Cremation will follow services.

Vern McGee
Vern C. McGee, 48, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Tuesday, May 19, 2009. Survivors include his parents, Charles McGee and Martha Grover Mandl; brothers, Matthew McGee and Jimmy Miller; and son, Jacob McGee. Cremation, with private services to be held later. Fred McKinney
Fred R. McKinney, 87, Rayville, Mo., died Sunday, May 31, 2009, at Excelsior Springs Medical Center in Excelsior Springs, Mo. Mr. McKinney was born Aug. 18, 1921. He was married to Wanda McRorey in January 1941. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II for 4-plus years, participating in the Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe campaigns. Upon his return from the war, he and Wanda settled in Excelsior Springs and then moved to Texas, where Fred worked as a district sales manager for Prudential Insurance Company. They retired back to Rayville in the early 1980s. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Mecci Martin; and son, Mike McKinney. Survivors include his wife, Wanda; two sons, Ron McKinney and Jason McKinney; one daughter, Sharon Hardaway; and many grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 3, at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. A visitation will be held 30 minutes before the service, also at the funeral home. Burial in Sanderson Cemetery in Rayville.

Billy O'Dell
Billy D. O'Dell (Sgt., U.S. Army), 62, Kansas City, Mo., died unexpectedly at home on Thursday, May 21, 2009. Mr. O'Dell was the son of Sarah Frances Sloan and Forest D O'Dell and served in the Vietnam War. Survivors include his father, Ben Hankins, Missouri; sister, Dorothy, Alaska; brothers, Ben Hankins III, Timothy and James, Missouri; daughter, Catherine O'Dell, Florida; son, Gilbert and Heather O'Dell, Germany; granddaughters, Dakotah, Lydia and Kaylin, Germany; and grandson, Nathanial, Germany.

"Jocko" Parker
Elmo "Jocko" Parker Jr., 63, Windsor, Mo., died Saturday, May 2, 2009, at the Veterans Medical Center in Kansas City, Mo.  Mr. Parker was born April 15, 1946, the youngest son of 13 children of Elmo and Nellie Parker. After he returned from serving in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, he became a general contractor and roofer. Jocko was preceded in death by his parents and his youngest sister, Cindy.  Survivors include one daughter, Micah Richardson; 11 brothers and sisters, Arletta Teegarden, Windsor, John Parker, Elmira, Jim Parker, Lawson, Mollie Sims, Lincoln, Edith Vance, Mt. Vernon, Dennis Parker, Kansas City, Kan., Pat Elam, Osawatomie, Kan., Tressie Elam, LaCygne, Kan., Sue Nance, Excelsior Springs, Carol Carder, Cowgill, and Marilyn Brandon, Cowgill; and one grandson, Justin. Catherine Quiring
Catherine Alice Maberry Warren Quiring, 60, died Saturday, May 23, 2009, at her son’s residence in Guymon, Okla. Mrs. Quiring was born Feb. 18, 1949, in Newton, Kan., the daughter of Clel and Loretta (Foster) Maberry. She was married to Larry Quiring on Sept. 11, 1976. She was an active member of the Prathersville Bible Church in Prathersville, Mo. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her father and her brother, Jonathan Maberry. Marilyn Ritchey
Marilyn Kaye Ritchey, 66, Shell Knob, Mo., died Monday, May 25, 2009, at her home. Mrs. Ritchey was born April 1, 1943, in Ray County, the daughter of Vernon and Ruth (Lockamy) Holder. She was married to Ray Ritchey on July 4, 1971; he survives. She attended Ray County rural schools, then graduated from Excelsior Springs High School. In 1983 she and Ray moved from Liberty to Shell Knob, where she was office manager and co-owner of Shell Knob Insurance. She was a member of Central Community United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers. In addition to her husband, survivors include one son, Robert E. Ritchey, Virginia Beach, Va.; one brother, Michael Holder, Kansas City; and two sisters, Bonnie McGinnis, Orrick, and Shelby McFee, Denver, Colo. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 29, at Fohn Funeral Home in Shell Knob, with the Rev. Dean Wilson officiating. A private burial will be held in Lawson. Memorial contributions may be made to the Summer Reading Club at the Shell Knob Library.

Clyde Shepard
Clyde Wayne Shepard, 59, Ludlow, Mo., died Thursday, May 7, 2009, at his home. Mr. Shepard was born April 27, 1950, in Excelsior Springs, the son of Lyle and Wanda (O’Dell) Shepard. When he returned from serving in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, he began building homes. He was married to Sabra Nolker in March 1977.  Survivors include his wife, Sabra Shepard, of the home; sons, Jeremy Vann Shepard, Concordia, and Jamison Forrest Shepard, Rayville; daughter, Melissa Dawn Shepard, Liberty; parents, Lyle and Wanda Shepard, Excelsior Springs; brothers, Terry Lee Shepard, Excelsior Springs, and Will Shepard, Liberty; and five grandchildren. Cremation. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are through Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Ailene Stark
Ailene Rae Stark, 77, went to be with her Savior on Friday, May 15, 2009, at Lawson Manor and Rehabilitation Center in Lawson, Mo., after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. Ms. Stark was born on June 8, 1931, in Carrollton, Mo., the daughter of Artie Estel and Mary Frances (Burkhart) Cox. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dale Stark, in May of 2006. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Gene and Marla Vanderford, of Kansas City, Mo., and her son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Connie Stark, of Lawson, Mo.; grandchildren, Derek and Dana Vanderford and Tyler, Tanner and Madison Stark; two great-grandchildren, Audrey and Gavin Ray Vanderford; and one sister, Mary Ann “Annie” Shay. Mom was a very caring and giving lady who always put others first. She was a certified nurse's aide and med tech, and worked in many of the area nursing homes over the years. She really loved her work. She also loved her grandchildren very much! Ailene spent much of her time caring for them and investing in their lives. When she could no longer physically be involved, she always assured them that they were always in her prayers. Because of her testimony of receiving Christ as her Savior, we know she is in a much better place! Mom loved the Lord, his Word, and going to church to worship and sing praises to his name, and we know she’s doing that right now. We will miss you a lot, mom, but we also know we will see you again! A funeral service for Ailene will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 19, at Polley Funeral Home in Lawson, Mo. A visitation will be held an hour beforehand. Burial will take place at Old Union Cemetery.

Martin Stevens
Martin Lynn Stevens, 38, died Sunday, May 31, 2009, after a brief battle with cancer. Mr. Stevens was born April 16, 1971, in Kansas City, Kan. He was in the Marine Corps from 1989 to 2001, then worked at Academy Sports in Temple, Texas, until the time of his illness. Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Cordell, Harker Heights, Texas; daughters, Elizabeth and Madelyn; mother and stepfather, Linda and Will Pittengerm, Kansas City; and three sisters, Pamela Swarts, Lawson, and Lori Zimmerman and Donna Hutton, both of Kansas City. A memorial service was held Wednesday, June 3, in Temple, Texas. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 6, at the Kingston Cemetery in Kingston, Mo. Arrangements are through Pitts Funeral Home in Braymer.

Melvin Stewart
Melvin Claude Stewart, 50, of Rayville, Mo., died unexpectedly Thursday, May 7, 2009, at Ray County Memorial Hospital in Richmond, Mo. Mr. Stewart was born Sept. 29, 1958, in Kansas City, the son of Marion Francis and Lorene (Davis) Stewart. He was a lifelong resident of the Rayville community and graduated from Richmond High School in 1976. He had been employed by Waller Trucking for 12 years, Rooney Trucking for nine years and at the time of his death had been employed with Kallmeyer Brothers Enterprises Inc. of Hermann. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Amy Stewart, in June 1984. Survivors include one son, Shane Stewart, Rayville; one daughter, Holli Stewart, Richmond; one stepson, Cory Branscum, Rayville; his significant other, Christine Branscum, Rayville; two brothers, Raymond Stewart, Lexington, and Ray Stewart, Rayville; three sisters, Linda Allen, Lawson, Glenda Holman, Richmond, and Brenda Marrant, Excelsior Springs; and other relatives. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 9, at Polley Funeral Home in Richmond. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service, from 1 to 2 p.m., at the funeral home. Burial will be in Richmond Memory Gardens.

Willie Tracy
Willie Inis Mabary Tracy, 79, died Saturday, May 2, 2009, at her daughter's home in Richmond, Mo. Ms. Tracy was born March 2, 1930, in Kansas City, the daughter of Inis (Kelly) and William H. Thompson. She was married to Frank Dalton Mabary on Nov. 12, 1948; he died Aug. 6, 1999. She was later married to Paul E. Tracy; he died Feb. 8, 2009. She worked at BMA for 13 years, then was a stay-at-home mom for 15 years. After that, she worked at the Salvation Army for 28 years. After retiring, she worked for the BOT radio station. She was a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church in Richmond. In addition to her parents and her husbands, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Bivian Thompson, Murde Thompson, Murl Thompson and Burl Thompson; and two sisters, G. Pearl Hunt and Ilo West. Survivors include one daughter, Patricia M. Ogg, Richmond; three stepchildren, Barbara Rasa, Higginsville, and Richard Tracy and Ted Tracy, both of Richmond; two grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 9, at Park Lawn Funeral Home in Kansas City. Visitation will be held during the hour before the service, also at the funeral home. Jerry Waltrip
Jerry Wayne Waltrip, 66, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Tuesday, May 19, 2009, at St. Luke's Hospital Plaza in Kansas City, Mo. Cremation. No services are planned at this time. Arrangements are through Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs.

William Wuttke
William Dean Wuttke, 57, Blue Springs, Mo., died Saturday, May 23, 2009. Mr. Wuttke was born April 15, 1952, in Excelsior Springs, the son of Arthur J. and Barbara Thompson Wuttke. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Deanna Wuttke; sons, William Wuttke II and Robert Wuttke; stepson, Gary Cook Jr.; siblings, Arthur J. Wuttke Jr. and Betty Jean McLaughlin; and four grandchildren. Funeral services and visitation were held Thrusday, May 28, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Blue springs. Interment in the Blue Springs Cemetery.

James Zeikle
James Orville Zeikle, 61, Richmond, Mo., died Sunday, May 3, 2009. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 6, at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond; burial with full military honors in Richmond Memory Gardens. Visitation will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 5, at the funeral home.
