Kaye Ahart
Kaye Ahart, 67, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Thursday, April 3, 2008, at Valley Manor and Rehabilitation Center in Excelsior Springs. Ms. Ahart was born May 30, 1940, in Rayville, the daughter of Walter and Theta (Hartman) Zirjacks. She was married to Bill Ahart, who preceded her in death on March 9, 1996. She worked as a hairdresser and was a partner in the Supreme Beauty Salon in Excelsior Springs. She was a member of Salem Christian Union Church in Excelsior Springs. Survivors include two sons, Jackie Smith, Excelsior Springs, and Russell Millsap, Arkansas; one sister, Fern Arbuckle, Excelsior Springs; one brother, Ival Zirjacks, Liberty; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Cremation. Memorial visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 7, at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs; graveside committal services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 8, at Crown Hill Cemetery in Excelsior Springs.
Joyce Ayers
Joyce Ann Ayers, 64, Hamilton, Mo., died Tuesday, April 15, 2008, at a hospital in St. Joseph, Mo. Ms. Ayers was born Feb. 15, 1944, in Excelsior Springs, the daughter of Hugh Ervin and Anna Taggart Woods. She had worked at Stride Shoe Factory in Hamilton, and had also been a school cook. She was a member of Hamilton Community of Christ Church. She was married to her first husband, Curt Blankenship, in March 1969. She was married to her second husband, William "Bill" Ayers, on Feb. 25, 1983; he preceded her in death in 2006. In addition to her parents and her second husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Murl Thomas and Mike Woods. Survivors include one daughter, Rachael Wortman, Gallatin; one brother, Gregory Woods, Grain Valley; six stepchildren; and nine grandchildren. Funeral services were scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday, April 18, at Bram Funeral Home in Hamilton. Visitation was held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 17, at the funeral home, where friends were invited to call anytime after 1 p.m. Thursday. Interment at Brown Cemetery in Gallatin. Memorial contributions may be made to Caldwell County Foundation for Cancer Assistance.
Glenn Bailey
Glenn C. Bailey, 53, Henderson, Nevada (formerly of Lawson, Mo.), died Tuesday, April 8, 2008, at the St. Rose Dominican Hospital in Henderson, Nevada. Mr. Bailey was born June 8, 1954, in Lawson, Mo., the son of Noah F. and Leta Mae (Holman) Bailey. He was employed by McDonalds in Phoenix, Ariz., until the company expanded to include franchises for Churchs Chicken around 1980, at which time he moved to the Las Vegas area. He later was employed by Ethel M. Candy until his retirement in October 2007. After retirement he worked part time for a marina on Lake Mead. He was preceded in death by his father in 1989. Survivors include his mother, Leta Mae Bailey, Lawson; three sisters, Leta Faye Sanders, Excelsior Springs, Ida Rose Pearon, Richmond, and Evelyn Thomas, Lawson; two brothers, Jay Bailey, Excelsior Springs, and John Bailey, Lawson; and other relatives. A memorial visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, April 12, at Polley Funeral Home in Lawson. On-line condolences may be left at www.polleyfuneral home.com. *Stanley Baker
Stanley L. Baker, 57, Excelsior Springs, Mo., passed away Monday, April 14, 2008, in Las Vegas, Nev. Stanley was born on August 25, 1950 in Kansas City, Mo. the son of Francis and Bessie Jean (Barker). On January 17, 1969 he married Eva (Scoma) Baker. Stanley had worked in the grocery produce business for over 40 years. He had worked for many years as the produce manager for the Apple Market in Richmond, Mo. and was currently the produce manager for Festival Foods off of Chouteau in Kansas City, Mo. Stanley was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He enjoyed four-wheeling, skiing, and going on cruises. He also enjoyed rebuilding cars, and building houses. He could do most anything it seemed. He was preceded in death by one brother, Dennis James Baker, in 2006. Survivors include his wife, Eva Baker, of the home; one son, Christopher Wayne Baker and wife, Tammy, Warrensburg, Mo.; one daughter, Stephanie Lynn Baker, Excelsior Springs, Mo.; his parents, Francis and Jean Baker, Excelsior Springs, Mo.; two sisters, Linda Howerton and husband, Danny, Excelsior Springs, Mo., and Gail Baker, Lima, Peru; and two grandchildren: Bre1Anna Marie Baker and Chandler Dean Baker. Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday, April 19, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Excelsior Springs, Mo. Burial will be in Polley Cemetery, Excelsior Springs, Mo. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church. Arrangements are through Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. Bobbie Bears
Bobbie Randall Bears, 80, Lawson, Mo., died Thursday, April 17, 2008, at the Veterans Home in Cameron, Mo. Mr. Bears was born Feb. 12, 1928, in Cainsville, the son of Fred Oliver and Nelsie Mae (Parmer) Bears. He was married to Norma Sorrell on Dec. 23, 1951. He was a truck driver for Churchill Trucklines, retiring in 1991. He was also a farmer. He attended Lawson Assembly of God Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Hurston Bears and Paul Bears; and five sisters, Mildred Booth, Helen Austin, Elvira Thogmartin, Betty Barratt and an infant sister, Lilly. Survivors include his wife, Norma, of the home; one son: Steve Randall Bears, North Kansas City; three daughters, Linda Marie Phillips, Rayville, Jennifer E. "Ginger" Gettman, O'Fallon, Mo., and Polly Ann Brewer, Holt; one brother, Kenneth Bears, Morrisville; one sister, Joanne Pratt, Springfield; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 20, at the Lawson Assembly of God Church; burial in Antioch Cemetery in Holt. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, April 19, at Polley Funeral Home in Lawson.
*"Bert" Bowker
Bertha "Bert" Bowker, 71, of Orrick, Mo., lost her battle with cancer on Wednesday, April 16, 2008, in Richmond, Mo. Bert was born in Orrick on May 19, 1936, to Joseph and Lavena Windsor, and was a lifelong area resident. Along with being a loving mother to her three children, Bert worked as a beautician and then as a teacher's aide for the Orrick School District. Bert was an avid reader and could usually be found with a book or crossword puzzle in hand. In 1999 Bert met her soulmate, Melvin Bowker, and they were married in July of 2003. Although their time together was short, it was the happiest time of her life. Along with her loving husband Mel, Bert is survived by two daughters, Jodie King of Liberty and Jana Bunch of Orrick; one son, Jason Offutt of Maryville; and two stepdaughters, Venetta Brock of Lawson and Lynn Hylton of Liberty. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, and six stepgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents. A memorial service to celebrate Bert's life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 19, at the Orrick United Methodist Church in Orrick, Mo. Arrangements are through Polley Funeral Home, Excelsior Springs, Mo. (816) 630-3388. Helen Brunke
Helen L. Brunke, 93, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Thursday, April 3, 2008, at Liberty Hospital in Liberty, Mo. Ms. Brunke was born Feb. 9, 1915, in Colony, Kan., the daughter of Fred E. and Bessie Odella (James) Bruner. She was married to Cecil Brunke on March 27, 1935. She was vice president and head bookkeeper of Brunke Hardware in Excelsior Springs with her husband, Cecil, until he preceded her in death in 1996. She then became president of the corporation. She was a member of Barbee Memorial Presbyterian Church in Excelsior Springs. Survivors include three sons, John R. Brunke, Kenneth E. Brunke, and Larry D. Brunke, all of Excelsior Springs; one sister, Mary German, Neosha Falls, Kan.; one brother, Richard Bruner, Neosha Falls, Kan.; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 5, at Barbee Memorial Presbyterian Church in Excelsior Springs. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 4, at the church. Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery in Excelsior Springs. Gary Burkett
Gary L. Burkett, 43, Cameron, Mo., died Thursday, April 17, 2008. Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 21, at Poland-Thompson Chapel in Cameron. Memorial contributions may be made to the family to defray funeral expenses.
"Boots" Bush
Eldwin Eugene "Boots" Bush, 74, Rayville, Mo., died Saturday, April 19, 2008, at Ray County Memorial Hospital in Richmond, Mo. Mr. Bush was born March 22, 1934, in Ray County, the son of Sidney Carl and Ruth (Adams) Bush. He was married to Delorise L. Belt on July 24, 1954; she survives of the home. Additional survivors include two sons, Garry Bush, Richmond, and Brian Bush, Rayville; three daughters, Shirley O'Dell, Susan Duffett and Mindy Rooney, all of Richmond; one brother, Norman Bush, Alvin, Texas; 16 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Visitation was held from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 21, at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond. Funeral services were scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 22, at the funeral home; burial in Sunny Slope Cemetery in Richmond. Claude Clevenger Jr.
Claude F. Clevenger, Jr., 79, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Friday, April 4, 2008, at Valley Manor & Rehabilitation Center in Excelsior Springs. Mr. Clevenger was born Dec. 23, 1929, in Bevere, the son of Claude Francis and Nora Jane Clevenger. He was married to Rosalee Duncan, who survives of the home. He worked as a local truck driver for Middle West Freightways. He was a member of Woods Memorial Christian Church in Excelsior Springs. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Clevenger. In addition to his wife, Rosalee, survivors include two daughters, Jackie Ballard, Camden, and Cathy Roberts, Excelsior Springs; one son, Rickie Clevenger, Kansas; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, at Old New Garden Cemetery near Excelsior Springs. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, April 8, at Polley Funeral Home Chapel, Excelsior Springs.
Gene Clevenger
Almus Eugene Gene Clevenger, 91, Cameron, Mo. (formerly of Excelsior Springs, Mo.), died Wednesday, April 9, 2008, at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cameron. Mr. Clevenger was born Sept. 8, 1916, in Ray County, the son of Homer Lee and Myrtle Maggie (Covey) Clevenger. He was married to Edith Lilly Payne, who preceded him in death on April 10, 2004. After serving in the Army during World War II, he worked briefly for the Peppard Seed Company before becoming employed with the Veterans Administration. He worked in Excelsior Springs for about 25 years until 1963, when he went to work for the VA in Dallas, Texas, as head carpenter. He retired in 1974, and he and his wife returned to Excelsior Springs. He was a member of Pisgah Baptist Church. In addition to his wife and his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Garnett Clevenger. Survivors include one daughter, Meredith Turner, Cameron; three grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; one sister, Lorena Baker, Ulman; and other relatives. Graveside services were scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday, April 11, at Hillcrest Cemetery in Excelsior Springs, with Elder Darle Siegel officiating. Military rites will be conducted at graveside. No public visitation was planned, however, friends were invited to call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 10, at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. Raymond D. Clevenger, 81, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Tuesday, April 22, 2008. Sophia LaVerne Crowley, 91, Excelsior Springs, Mo., passed away Saturday, April 12, 2008. Sophia LaVerne Crowley was born Jan. 28, 1917, in Excelsior Springs, the daughter of Bert and Janie Sharp O1Dell. She was a 1935 graduate of Excelsior Springs High chool. She was a member of North New Garden Primitive Baptist Church. She and Ralph H. Crowley were united in marriage in August 1937. LaVerne was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in July of 1978; infant twins in April of 1944; and sister, Irene Hinds, in January 1951. Those remaining: daughter, Shirley Jane Crowley, U.S. Embassy in Holland; son and daughter-in-law, Ralph E. and Shirley Ann Crowley, Excelsior Springs, Mo.; granddaughter and husband, Kelly Lynn and Michael Routh, Liberty, Mo.; granddaughter and husband, Amanda and Jeremy Riddle, Excelsior Springs, Mo.; grandson and wife, Jason and Andrea Gilbertson, Kansas City; two great-granddaughters, Kaylea Jones and Janae Riddle; one great-grandson, Gunner Riddle; and sister, Margaret Butler Blanchard, Oklahoma. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 17, at North New Garden Primitive Baptist Church, Excelsior Springs, Mo.; burial will be in the church cemetery. Mrs. Crowley will lie in state from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 16, at Bross & Spidle Funeral Home, Excelsior Springs. Gay Durbin
Gay Dene Van Zant Durbin, 63, Liberty, Mo., died Thursday, April 24, 2008, at Liberty Hospital. Ms. Durbin was born April 13, 1945, in Verona, Ark., the daughter of U.E. and Ruth McEntire Van Zant. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a baby brother, Joe Brian. Survivors include her husband of 29 years, Kenneth Eugene Durbin, of the home; one son, Darren Lee Wilson, Warsaw; one stepdaughter, Kelly Muson, Orrick; one sister, Joy Tapp, Liberty; four brothers, Roy Van Zant, Mulvane, Kan., Ray Van Zant, Liberty, Loy Van Zant, Kearney, and Ronnie Van Zant, Platte City; and three stepgrandchildren. Pete Gonzales, 70, Smithville, Mo., died Sunday, April 6, 2008, at St. Joseph Hospital. Benjamin Gray
Benjamin Joseph Gray, 17, Missouri City, Mo., died Friday, April 18, 2008, from injuries sustained in an auto accident. Ben was born Feb. 22, 1991, in Kansas City, the son of Janet and Galen Miller Gray. He was reared and received his elementary education in Missouri City; at the time of his death, Ben was a junior at Excelsior Springs High School. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Norman and Beverly Gray. Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Janet and Frank Kaczmarek, of the home; his father and stepmother, Galen and Cherie Gray, Kansas City; three brothers, Brandon Gray, Kansas City, and Jake Gray and Sam Kaczmarek, both of Missouri City; two stepbrothers, Frankie Kaczmarek, Chicago, Ill., and Adam Austin, Kansas City; a stepsister, Hailey Austin, Kansas City; his maternal grandparents, Alfred and Lora Miller, Missouri City; his maternal stepgrandfather, Dale Stark, Kansas City; and his paternal stepgrandparents, Bob and Corene Kaczmarek, Chicago, Ill., and Frank and Carol Kaczmarek, Tennessee. Private family interment was scheduled for Tuesday, April 22. The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 21, at Bross & Spidle Chapel in Excelsior Springs.
Jennie Holcomb
Jennie V. Rogers Holcomb, 87, Lawson, Mo., died Sunday, April 6, 2008, in Fenton, Mo. Ms. Holcomb was born Nov. 5, 1920, in Kansas City, the daughter of Phillip and Marguerite Rogers. She worked for Marley Cooling Tower Co. for 20 years, retiring in 1985. Survivors include her daughters, Pat Hamblin, Spring Hill, Kan., and Janet Fuehne, Fenton; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. Interment was held Friday, April 11, in Mena, Ark. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Mercy Hospice, 1000 Des Peres Rd., Ste. 200B, St. Louis, Mo. 63131.
Virginia Johnson
Virginia Rose Johnson, 85, Kearney, Mo., died Sunday, April 3, 2008, at her home. Mrs. Johnson was born May 8, 1922, in Kansas City, the daughter of Raymond L. and Dorothy M. Farley Nolting. She had lived in Kearney for the past 35 years. She was one of the first women jazz drummers in Kansas City, beginning her musical career at the age of 18, and she is honored at the American Jazz Museum in Kansas City. She played drums and sang for more than 50 years with some of the best musicians in Kansas City under the stage name of Virginia Gordon and previous married names of Roelofsz and Williams. Survivors include her husband of 35 years, James 3Jim2 Johnson; five children, Laurence Roelofsz and Melinda D. Neer, both of Kansas City, Cynthia A. Jarrar, Kearney, Charles R. Williams, Austin, Texas, and Sheri R. Kubin, Manvel, Texas; 14 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 17, at Fry-Bross & Spidle Chapel in Kearney; burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 16, at the funeral chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Liberty Hospctal Hospice.
Melissa Madison
Melissa Ann Madison, 38, Richmond, Mo., died Thursday, April 17, 2008, at her home. Ms. Madison was born June 9, 1969, in Kansas City, to Robert and Ruth Ann (Lauck) Madison. She had worked at Ideal Industries since 1987, and was an active member of First Baptist Church in Richmond. She was preceded in death by her father and her grandparents, Ross and Katherine Madison and Emmette and Charline Lauck. Survivors include her mother, Ruth Ann Madison, Richmond; and her many aunts, uncles and cousins. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 21, at Polley Funeral Home in Richmond, with visitation during the hour before the service. Burial in Richmond Memory Gardens. Marjorie Mick
Marjorie E. Mick, 86, Holt, Mo., died Sunday, April 27, 2008, at Liberty Hospital in Liberty, Mo. Mrs. Mick was born Aug. 21, 1921, in Kansas City, the daughter of Ed and Hazel Hutzel Waters. She was marred to Willie Mick on July 26, 1947, and they moved to Holt, where she lived for 61 years. She was a member of Holt First Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Mick, on July 8, 2005. Survivors include two sons, Edward Mick and Donald Mick, both of Holt; two daughters, Cathy Gensler and Debbie Mick, both of Holt; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services were set for 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 1, at Fry-Bross & Spidle Chapel in Kearney; burial in Fairview Cemetery in Kearney. Mrs. Mick lay in state from noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Holt First Baptist Church.
Floyd Minnick
Floyd Ray Minnick, 58, Richmond, Mo., died Wednesday, April 16, 2008, at Ray County Memorial Hospital in Richmond. Mr. Minnick was born Jan. 17, 1950, in Richmond, the son of Floyd Jennings and Hazel Agnes (Williams) Minnick. He was married to Sonda K. Shockley on Sept. 6, 1980; she survives of the home. He was a production manager for American Wilcon Plastic Inc. in Orrick. He was a member of the Faith Assembly of God Church in Polo. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul Kenneth Minnick and William Lee Minnick in infancy; and one half-sister, Betty Judd. In addition to his wife, survivors include one son, Kevin Ray Minnick, Springfield; one daughter, Molly Anna Minnick, of the home; two sisters, Rogena Malloy, Richmond, and Sharon Cox, Richmond; and other relatives. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 19, at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond. Visitation will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 18, at the funeral home. Kenneth Moberly
Kenneth Franklin Moberly, 89, Kearney, Mo., died Tuesday, April 29, 2008, at his home. Mr. Moberly was born June 22, 1918, in Clay County, the son of William E. and Allie Riley Moberly. He was a lifelong resident of Clay County, and was a farmer before he retired in 1978 after 40 years in the business. He was married to Wanda Faye Duncan on Aug. 31, 1940. He served on the Kearney School Board during the 1950s. He was a member of Kearney First Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Moberly; a great-grandson, Max Stegall; and two brothers, William Moberly and Raymond Moberly. Survivors include his wife, Wanda; two daughters, June Manar, Liberty, and Joyce Ervin, Kearney; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 3, at Kearney First Baptist Church; burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Kearney. Tristan Paul and Travis William Moore, infant sons of Tracy Shiflett and Larry Moore, Lathrop, Mo., died Friday, April 11, 2008. Tristan and Travis were born April 8, 2008, at Children1s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Mo. Survivors include their parents, Tracy Shiflett and Larry 3Buddy2 Moore, of the home; one brother, Hunter, of the home; maternal grandparents, Kim and Patrick Kelly, Kansas City, and Greg Shiflett and Jodee VanSant, Holt; paternal grandparents, Sandy and Larry Moore, Kearney; great-grandparents, Raymond and Nina Hughes, Gladstone; and great-grandmother, Joann Shiflett, Holt. Clinton Dewayne ODell, 49, died Wednesday, April 2, 2008, at Truman Hospital in Kansas City, Mo. Mr. ODell was born March 31, 1959, in Richmond, the son of Raymond G. and Ida Jean (Barker) ODell. He was married to Melissa Richardson on April 14, 2003. He was a farmer and with his brother, Jerry, was co-producer of The ODell Rodeo Co. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Diana (Wilson) ODell; one son, Travis ODell; two daughters, Cherrie ODell and Chana ODell; his father, Raymond G. ODell; and his grandparents, Clyde W. and Ollie G. ODell and James and Lizzie Barker. Survivors include his wife, Melissa, of the home; three sons, Steven ODell, Kellon ODell and Ryan ODell, all of the home; three daughters, Crissy Richardson and Morgan ODell, both of the home, and Olivia ODell, Lexington; his mother, Ida Jean ODell, Richmond; three brothers, Jerry ODell, Hardin, Rex ODell, Richmond, and Johnnie ODell, Buckner; and two sisters, Karry Fields and Kimberly Mace, both of Richmond. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, April 7, at Polley Funeral Home in Richmond; burial in Woodland Cemetery in Richmond. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, April 6, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Ruth Orscheln, 83, Richmond, Mo., died Friday, April 25, 2008. Graveside services were held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, April 28, at Woodland Cemetery in Richmond, with burial to follow. John R. Pettus
John Richard Pettus, 80, Lee's Summit, Mo. (formerly of Richmond and Henrietta, Mo.), died Sunday, April 13, 2008, at Jefferson Health Care in Lee's Summit. Mr. Pettus was born Sept. 27, 1927, in Henrietta, the son of Joseph Lee and Augusta Susan (Delameter) Pettus. He was a former member of the Henrietta Methodist Church, where he had served as janitor in his earlier years. He was preceded in death by his parents and four sisters, Ruth Miller, Mary Smith, Margaret Pettus and Juanita Pettus. Survivors include two sisters, the Rev. Norma Judd Dumas, Lee's Summit, and Alice Ann Davis, Waterville, N.Y.; numerous nieces and nephews, including his guardian, Susan Mullin, Warsaw; and a special foster son, Bob Flagler, Odessa. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, at Sunny Slope Cemetery in Richmond. Visitation will be one hour prior at Polley Funeral Home in Richmond. There will be a memorial service at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 17, at Jefferson Health Care in Lee's Summit. Memorial contributions may be made to the Jefferson Health Care Activity Department.
Gregory Pigago
Gregory Michael Pigago, 27, Excelsior Springs, Mo. (formerly of St. Louis, Mo.), died Wednesday, April 30, 2008. He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth. Survivors include his mother, Joyce; sister, Stella Tanner; brother, Daniel; daughter, Gia; and girlfriend, Amanda. Visitation will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, May 4, at Prathersville Bible Church off Route H, three miles southwest of Excelsior Springs. Donald Proffitt
Donald Wayne Proffitt, 87, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Wednesday, April 23, 2008, at Liberty Hospital in Liberty, Mo. Mr. Proffitt was born June 14, 1920, in rural Norborne, the son of Mitchel and Virgie F. (Stratton) Proffitt. He was married to Dorothy E. (Ware) Proffitt on Aug. 31, 1940; she survives of the home. Mr. Proffitt first started out farming with his father in the Millville area, then moved to Elkhorn and operated the Elkhorn General Store. He had also worked for O'Dell-Heathman Oil in Excelsior Springs, and worked for the Missouri State Highway Maintenance Department as a truck driver until he retired. He was a member of Rock Falls Baptist Church near Elkhorn. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Marilyn R. Rauchle; and three brothers, Lloyd G. Proffitt and two others in infancy. Survivors include one grandson, Chris Wayne Rauchle, Independence; one granddaughter, Christina Rauchle, Liberty; one son-in-law, Chris William Rauchle, Kearney; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 26, at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond. Mr. Proffitt will lie in state from 2 to 5 p.m. Friday, April 25, at the funeral home. Dorothy Proffitt
Dorothy E. Proffitt, 90, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Sunday, April 27, 2008, at Shirkey Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center in Richmond, Mo. Mrs. Proffitt was born Oct. 19, 1917, in Richmond, the daughter of Butler W. and Emma L. (Derstler) Ware. She was married to Donald Wayne Proffitt on Aug. 31, 1940; he preceded her in death on April 23, 2008. She had worked with her husband at the General Store in Elkhorn. She also worked as a nurse's aide for the McCleary Clinic in Excelsior Springs, and then worked for Whitaker Cable in Excelsior Springs until she retired. She was a member of Rock Falls Baptist Church near Elkhorn. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Marilyn Rose Rauchle; and a sister, Mary Vance. Survivors include one grandson, Chris Wayne Rauchle, Independence; one granddaughter, Christina Rauchle, Liberty; one son-in-law, Chris William Rauchle, Kearney; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. Carl Pulliam
Carl Duane Pulliam, 81, rural Richmond, Mo., died Sunday, April 27, 2008, at North Kansas City Hospital in North Kansas City, Mo. Mr. Pulliam was born Feb. 5, 1927, in Turney, the son of Norris W. and Genevieve V. (Silvius) Pulliam. He was married to Alberta Mae Holloway on April 5, 1947. After World War II, he returned home to the Millville/Stet/rural Richmond area, where he farmed and raised livestock until he retired in 1989. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant child in 1956 and five brothers, W.A. Pulliam, Harol Pulliam, Curtis Pulliam, Joe Pulliam and infant Robert Pulliam. Survivors include his wife, Alberta Pulliam; two sons, Steven D. Pulliam, Richmond, and Berry D. Pulliam, Overland Park, Kan.; one brother, Denzil Pulliam, Richmond; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Graveside services with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 1, at New Hope Cemetery, north of Hardin. Visitation will be held from 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, at Polley Funeral Home in Richmond, but the family will not be present. Sarah Margaret Rone, Walnut Ridge, Ark., died Thursday, April 10, 2008. Ms. Rone was preceded in death by her husband, Junior Rone; and a daughter, Addie Martha Rone Clements. Survivors include four sons, Joe Rone, Ravendon, Ark., Richard Rone, California, Robert Rone, Minnesota, and George Rone, Walnut Ridge, Ark.; 14 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Marylois Schwab
Marylois A. Schwab, 80, Lawson, Mo., died Wednesday, April 23, 2008, at Liberty Hospital in Liberty, Mo. Ms. Schwab was born Feb. 15, 1928, in Marengo, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Ina (Young) Brown. She was married to Everett L. Schwab on Sept. 22, 1948; he preceded her in death on Feb. 6, 1998. She was a school teacher in Iowa for several years, and most recently had worked for Smithview Manor in Lawson. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, David and Butch Schwab; and a sister, Dorothy Faas. Survivors include her children, Donna Owens, Lawson, Raymond Schwab, Illinois, David Dickson, Iowa, Garry Schwab, Independence, Dennis Schwab, Lawson, Rick Schwab, Lawson, Sharyl Stears, Independence, Kevin Schwab, Lathrop, and Connie McKee, Rayville; one brother, Gene Brown, Mid City, Okla.; one sister, Shirley Kinsey, Clarinda, Iowa; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, April 26, at Polley Funeral Home in Lawson. There will be a private family service at 7:30 p.m. Cremation. Alan Shannon
Alan Dan Shannon, 77, Liberty, Mo., died Monday, April 14, 2008, at Liberty Hospital. Mr. Shannon was born Dec. 8, 1930, in Liberty, the son of John E. Shannon Sr. and Ruth Robison Shannon. He was an over-the-road truck driver. He was married to his wife, Betty, on Oct. 18, 1954. He was part of the Clay County Sheriff's Posse. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife of 5 years, Betty (Snyder) Shannon, of the home; one son, Kevin Shannon, Missouri City; and one granddaughter, Katlynn Shannon, Kansas City North. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 18, at Bross & Spidle Chapel in Excelsior Springs; burial with military honors will follow in Means Cemetery in Liberty. Barbara Smith
Barbara Ann Smith, 64, Gladstone, Mo., died Tuesday, April 29, 2008, at her home. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her father, John W. Sherbo Sr.; and an infant brother, Richard. Survivors include her husband, Warner Smith, of the home; her mother, Martha Leonardi, Gladstone; daughters, Shelly Kovac, Kansas City, Linda Foy, Kansas City, Kan., Stephanie Shipstead, Montana; son, Bruce Smith, Montana; brothers, John W. Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 1, at St. Therese Catholic Church; interment was held at Ft. Leavenworth National Cemetery in Leavenworth, Kan. Edna Smith
Edna E. Smith, 90, died Saturday, April 5, 2008, at Liberty Hospital in Liberty, Mo. Mrs. Smith was born Jan. 5, 1918, the daughter of the late Louis and Anna Tagtmeyer. She was married to Ernest Edward Smith on March 15, 1940; he passed away on May 27, 1970. She was a resident of Pleasant Valley Manor Care Center and a member of Liberty Manor Baptist Church. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Esther Howard, Anna Marie Smith and Gertrude Thurman; two brothers, Emil Bud Tagtmeyer and Raymond Tagtmeyer; one granddaughter, Nicole Rachelle Smith; and one great-granddaughter, Suzanne Marie Weyers. Survivors include four children, Anna Rose Hedgpeth, Pleasant Valley, Carolyn Sue Haddock Piel, Blue Springs, Thomas Edward Smith, Excelsior Springs, and Shirley Mae Minnick, Cameron; 16 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many stepgrandchildren, stepgreat-grandchildren and stepgreat-great-great-grandchildren. A celebration of life was held Tuesday, April 8, at the Houstonia (Mo.) Cemetery, with Dr. Thomas Dunn officiating. Arrangements are through Bross & Spidle Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs.
Mary Swetnam
Mary Ann (Cockriel) Swetnam died Friday, April 18, 2008, in South Sioux City, Neb. Mrs. Swetnam was born in Smithville, Mo., and was employed as an executive secretary at Lynn Insurance Company in Kansas City when she met her husband of 41 years, Nathan Dean Swetnam. In addition to her parents, Tom and Helen Cockriel, she was preceded in death by her husband, Nathan Dean Swetnam. Survivors include two sons, Richard Dean Swetnam, Waterbury, Neb., and John Lawrence Swetnam, Kansas City, Mo.; and five grandchildren. Funeral services were set for 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, at Mt. Moriah & Freeman Funeral Home in Kansas City; burial in Mt. Moriah Cemetery. Visitation was scheduled for the hour before the services.
Margaret Thompson
Margaret Jean (Deah) Thompson, 83, Prairie Village, Kan., died Wednesday, April 16, 2008, at Menorah Medical Center. Ms. Thompson was born in Liberty, Mo. She was a mother and homemaker, and had worked for the Bendix Corporation, now Honeywell, during World War II while her husband was in the Army Air Force. She was a member of Village Presbyterian Church. In addition to her parents, Walter and Ethel Stollings, she was preceded in death by her husband, James W. Thompson; and two sisters, Ruth Snyder and Fay Bellamy. Survivors include her children, Bart Thompson, Leawood, Kan., Brett Thompson and Mark Thompson, both of Overland Park, Kan., Doug Thompson, California, and Cindy Dietz, Lenexa, Kan.; a brother, Paul Stollings, North Kansas City, Mo.; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Visitation was held from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Monday, April 21, at Church-Archer-Pasley Funeral Home in Liberty, followed by graveside services at Glenridge Cemetery in Liberty.

Dorothy "Lucille" Ulery, 85, Liberty, Mo., died Sunday, April 27, 2008. Ms. Ulery was born Jan. 14, 1923, the daughter of the Rev. J.S. and Dora Bottoms. She was a member of Terrace Lake United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, James C. Ulery, in 2002. Survivors include her sons, J.D. Ulery, Kansas City, and Jerry Ulery, Chicago, Ill.; three grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Larry Eugene White, 62, Lawson, Mo., passed away Saturday, April 5, 2008 at North Kansas City Hospital in North Kansas City, Mo. Larry was born on Jan. 22, 1946, in Excelsior Springs, the son of Buford and Julia (Buhrmeister) White. He worked driving the propane truck for Evans Oil for more than 35 years. Larry enjoyed car shows and visiting his friends at the café. Larry was always ready with a friendly smile and a wave. Larry was preceded in death by his father, Buford White, this past year. Survivors include his mother, Julia White, Richmond; one daughter, Staci Clevenger and husband, Charlie, Excelsior Springs; two sons, Darren White and wife, Tammy, Liberty, and John White, Raytown; one brother, Sonny White and wife, Pauline, Richmond; and four grandchildren, Mercedes, Cierra, Alexander, and Drake. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 9, at the Assembly of God Church in Lawson. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 8, at the church. Rickey Williams
Rickey Neil Williams, 39, Excelsior Springs, Mo. (formerly of Kansas City, Mo.), died Monday, April 21, 2008, at his home. Mr. Williams was born June 24, 1968, in Milan, Mo., the son of Billie P. Williams. Rickey lived in the Milan area for several years before moving to Orrick, where he graduated from Orrick High School in 1986. He was most known for showing dogs through the American Kennel Club (AKC). For a brief time he worked for Mortician1s Services in Kansas City before eventually moving to Excelsior Springs. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Max and Bevis Williams. Survivors include his mother, Billie Bailey, Brookfield; a sister, Crystal Redden, Brookfield; aunt and uncle, Keith and Sharon Williams, Richmond; two nieces; one nephew; and several cousins. A memorial visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday May 2, at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs, with the family receiving friends at that time. John Zismer
John Richard Zismer, 51, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Wednesday, April 2, 2008, at Liberty Hospital in Liberty, Mo. Mr. Zismer was born Dec. 17, 1956, in Kansas City, the son of John Donald and Wilma Jean (Porter) Zismer. He was married to Sherry McPeak-Barton on June 24, 1995. He was employed by Ebling Company, Grainger, Olathe Battery Plant for many years and retired from General Motors. He also farmed for Rhodus Farms. Survivors include his wife, Sherry, of the home; his mother, Wilma Zismer, Liberty; his father, John Donald Zismer and wife, Betty, Yuma, Ariz.; three stepchildren, Dustin Montgomery Gray, Liberty, Amanda Barton, Excelsior Springs, and Jessica Barton, Excelsior Springs; one sister, Debra Zismer, Sanford, Fla.; one brother, Jeffery Donald Zismer, Excelsior Springs; and seven grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 6, at Providence Baptist Church near Liberty. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, April 5, at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. Burial will be in Providence Cemetery.
