*Jimmy Baker
Jimmy T. Baker, 77, Excelsior Springs, Mo., passed away at his home on Sunday, March 29, 2009. Jimmy was born Sept. 9, 1931, in Grantsville, Mo., to Raymond T. and Pearl E. (Franklin) Baker. On May 5, 1956, Jimmy married Mary McGlauglin in Hannibal.  He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Jimmy went on to work as a truck driver for Lesser-Stouffer in Palmyra, and also for IML and Yellowfreight in Kansas City. He was a Mason for 30 years and a Shriner for 27 years. As a Shriner Circus Dad, he would buy tickets for the circus and give them back to the children. He was also a bell ringer for the Salvation Army, earning an award one year for collecting the most donations. Jimmy was also a member of the American Legion for 45 years, and also a member of the Teamsters Union. He enjoyed reading western novels and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Betty Lang; and his brother, Jerry Baker. Jimmy is survived by his wife, Mary, of the home; daughters, Juanita D. Summers and husband, Robert, Lathrop, Jennifer D. Cates, Parkville, and Janet D. Baker and significant other, Anthony Collins, Warrensburg; son, James D. Baker and wife, Susan, Excelsior Springs; brother, Gene Baker, Lewiston, Ill.; grandchildren, James Summers and wife, Marie, Excelsior Springs, Kelly Summers, Lathrop, Rachelle Summers, Claycomo, Erin Crawford, Excelsior Springs, Megan Sharp, Parkville, Jade Cates, Parkville, Jeffery Baker, Richmond, Anthony Collins, Jr. and Cierra Collins, Warrensburg; great-grandchildren, Teresa and Autumn Summers, Dylan Crawford, Deveryn Cox, Alazé and Jaidyn Crouse, Serenity Hayes, and Amya Collins; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. A funeral service was held at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 2, at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs.  A visitation was held from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 1. Burial will take place at Masonic Cemetery in Excelsior Springs. Memorial contributions may be made to Liberty Hospital Hopsice, Shriners Children's Hospital or St. Jude Hospital. Arrangements are under the direction of Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs, Mo.


Dorothy Baldwin
Dorothy Baldwin, 84, Independence, Mo., died Tuesday, March 24, 2009, at Liberty Hospital in Liberty, Mo. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 27, at Speaks Suburban Chapel in Independence, with services at 10 a.m. Saturday.


Becky Batchelor
Becky Sue Batchelor, 58, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Thursday March 18, 2009, at the Excelsior Springs Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Ms. Batchelor was born Feb. 21, 1951, in Kansas City, the daughter of Carl Lester and Benetta Geraldine (Aldrich) Davis. She was married to Donald Lee Batchelor on June 13, 1970; he preceded her in death March 13, 2002. She operated Becky's Cakes and Huble Ceramics, then later went to work for CitiBank and UMB Bank in Kansas City before transferring to the Excelsior Springs branch, where she was employed until 2000 when her health began to fail. She was a member of Excelsior Springs Baptist Church. Survivors include her three children, Dawnlynn Taylor, Kansas City, Suzanne Batchelor and her fiance, Bill, Excelsior Springs, and Andy Batchelor, Kansas City; her parents, Carl and Jerri Davis, Excelsior Springs; one sister, Karen Jones, Excelsior Springs; one brother, David Davis, Excelsior Springs; and six grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 21, at Excelsior Springs Baptist Church. Burial in Hillcrest Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 20, at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. Memorial contributions may be made to Good Shepherd Hospice or Excelsior Springs Baptist Church.

Mickey Bennett Sr.
Mickey Adair Bennett Sr., 65, Sugar Creek, MO., died Tuesday, March 3, 2009, in Palm Beach, Fla. Mr. Bennett was born Oct. 24, 1943, in Versailles, Mo. He was an entrepreneur. In addition to his parents, Charles and Bernadine Lietzke Bennett, he was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Earl Bennett; and a granddaughter, Arcada Grace Bennett. Survivors include his fiancee, Kathleen Howell, Excelsior Springs; two sons, Mickey Adair Bennett Jr., Versailles, and Charles Earl Bennett III, Santa Rosa, Calif.; two brothers, Charles Earl 3Bill2 Bennett Jr., Kenner, La., and Lindell Lee Bennett, San Jose, Calif.; one sister, Shirley Cannistraci, San Jose, Calif.; and two grandsons. Visitation will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 7, at the Mt. Washington Forever Chapel Mausoleum in Independence. A memorial banquet will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 8, at Heartland Church in Blue Springs. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday, March 9, at Hopewell Cemetery in Sedalia. *Katharine Berrey
Katharine W. Berrey passed away Sunday, March 8, 2009, at Liberty Hospital in Liberty, Mo. Katharine was born in Los Angeles, Calif., on Nov. 22, 1930, to Rosemary and Jefferson Wilcoxson. She was married to Robert W. Berrey III on Sept. 5, 1950, in Carrollton, Mo. They lived in Kansas City until moving to Excelsior Springs, Mo., in 1988. She was a member of Woods Memorial Christian Church in Excelsior Springs.  She was a former member of Country Club Christian Church in Kansas City, MO.  Her hobbies were cooking, sewing and gardening. She enjoyed summers fishing at Ottertail Lake, Minn., and yearly deer hunting in Wyoming.  She was a member of Alexander Doniphan at William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo.; Ducks Unlimited; Native Sons of Kansas City, Mo.; and Daughters of the American Revolution. Katharine is survived by son, Robert W. Berrey IV, Carrollton, Mo.; daughter, Mary Jane Berrey, Excelsior Springs, Mo.; son, John Lind Berrey, Liberty, Mo.; granddaughters, Katie and Kara Berrey, Carrollton, Mo.; and nieces, Christina Bell, Maple Valley, Wash., and Laurie MacCaskill, Los Angeles, Calif. She is preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and brother, Jefferson Wilcoxson Jr. A funeral for Katharine will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 11, at Woods Memorial Christian Church in Excelsior Springs, Mo. A visitation will be held an hour beforehand, also at the church. Burial will take place at Oak Hill Cemetery in Carrollton, Mo., at 4 p.m.  Arrangements are through Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. Memorial contributions may be made to the Children1s Center for the Visually Impaired in Kansas City or the Shriners Children1s Hospital in St. Louis, Mo.

April Brown
April Michelle Brown, 28, Kansas City, Mo., died Wednesday, March 18, 2009. Cremation. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 21, at North Cross United Methodist Church in Kansas City. Arrangements are through Cremation Society of KS & MO.

Glen Brown
Glen G. Brown, 84, Gladstone, Mo., died Saturday, March 7, 2009, at North Kansas City Hospital in North Kansas City, Mo. Mr. Brown was born Dec. 5, 1924, in Lexington, the son of John K. and Sarah L. (Bowman) Brown. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was married to his wife, Wilma, in 1951. He retired from Armco Steel in June 2008. He was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Wilma Nadine Hurr Brown; brothers, Ennis Brown and Norman Brown; and sisters, Dorothy Greer and Waneta Nelson. Survivors include two daughters, Denice Brown and Beckie Brown Reddock, both of Kansas City; three sisters, Mildred Miller, Richmond, Alta West, Gladstone, and Shirley Calvert, Kansas City; and two grandchildren. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 11, at White Chapel Funeral Home in Gladstone. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

P.J. Brown
Pearl James "P.J." Brown, 92, Kansas City, Mo., died Saturday, March 21, 2009.  Mr. Brown was born Oct. 26, 1916, near Camden, the fourth of nine children born to William Arthur and Ida Belle (Rimmer) Brown. He was married to Irene May Lee on July 12, 1937. He was a Baptist.  He worked several jobs during his lifetime. He worked in the area coal mines, and also worked on the changing of the course of the Missouri River.  He picked potatoes in Orrick and hauled them to Kansas City. In 1939, he went to work at Ford Motor Company and was employed there for 33 years.  He was preceded in death by Irene, his wife of 50 years; and two grandsons, Eric Britt and Creighton Brown.  Survivors include his children, Larry Brown, Knoxville, Norma Bell, Kearney, Sherry Hyder, Lawson, Janice Britt, Holt, Vicki Schaefer, Kearney; 12 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 25, at Polley Funeral Home, 5951 E. Hwy 10, Excelsior Springs. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 24, also at the funeral home.  Burial will be at Southpoint Cemetery, Orrick.

Susan Brown
Susan Brown, 68, Kearney, Mo., died Wednesday, March 25, 2009, at her home. Cremation. Visitation will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 1, at Fry-Bross & Spidle Funeral Home in Kearney. Services will follow at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 1.

Harley Brundage
Harley N. Brundage, 69, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at North Kansas City Hospital in North Kansas City, Mo. Mr. Brundage was born Feb. 6, 1940, in Kansas City, the son of Melvin L. and Lorena May (Shafer) Brundage.  He was married to Judy M. Moore on June 1, 1963. He was a member of Woodland Baptist Church and he was chief of the Kearney Fire Department in 1969. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Judy M. Brundage, of the home; sons, Brian Lee Brundage, Spanaway, Wash., and Paul Allen Brundage, Kearney; brothers, Bill Brundage, Pleasant Hill, Leroy Brundage, Independence, and John Brundage, Gladstone; sisters, Carol Holman, Kansas City, Jackie Miller, Independence, and Marion Murphy, Smithville; and four grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, March 6, at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. A visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, also at the funeral home. Burial will take place at Bethel Cemetery, outside of Excelsior Springs, following the funeral service. Memorial contributions may be made to Woodland Baptist Church. 

M. June Burk
Mabel June Burk, 73, Richmond, Mo. (formerly of Camden, Mo.), died Saturday, March 28, 2009, at North Kansas City Hospital in North Kansas City, Mo. Ms. Burk was born July 2, 1935, the daughter of James and Nora (Beason) West. She was married to Leslie "Pete" Burk on March 15, 1953. In 1955 they moved to the Richmond area. She was a housewife, mother and had several working positions. She was a member of the Henrietta Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, one sister and four brothers.  Survivors include her son, Duane Burk, Richmond; her daughter, Susan Skinner, Kansas City; three sisters; three grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. Visitation will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 1, at Polley Funeral Home in Richmond, with a graveside service to follow at 2:30 p.m. at Cravens Cemetery near Camden.

Lee Roy Burns
Lee Roy Burns, 86, Stet, Mo., died Tuesday, March 3, 2009. Funeral services were scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Friday, March 6, at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond. Visitation was held from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 5, at the funeral home. Burial with military honors was to be held in Cowgill Cemetery in Cowgill. Memorial contributions may be made to Bethany Church of the Brethren or Golden Age Nursing Home.

Wayne Clancy
Wayne L. Clancy, 62, De Soto, Kan., died Wednesday, March 11, 2009, at his home. Mr. Clancy was born June 25, 1946, in Excelsior Springs, the son of Virgil and Anna Mae Clancy. He worked for eight years in the Navy as a sonar technician aboard the USS Ozbourn and then the USS Roark during Vietnam. He was married to Karen Clevenger on Dec. 14, 1968. He worked at King Radio, Birdview Satellite, QMC and at the time of his death at Hisonic Inc. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Karen, of the home; two sons, Aaron Clancy, Olathe, Kan., and Brent Clancy, Ottawa, Kan.; one daughter, Leeanna Harris, Ottawa, Kan.; and nine grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 16, at Cedar Crest Memorial Chapel, 32665 Lexington Ave., De Soto, Kan. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, March 15, at the chapel. Burial in De Soto Cemetery in De Soto, Kan. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

*Norman Clevenger Sr.
Elder Norman Lee Clevenger Sr. 75, Richmond, Mo., passed away Saturday, March 28, 2009, at his home. Norman was born Dec. 1, 1933, in Lexington, Mo., the son of Jewell Soloman Clevenger and Alma Frances (O'Dell) Clevenger. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. On Oct. 31, 1954, he married Donna Mary (Simmerman) Clevenger, who preceded him in death on Sept. 14, 1998. Norman had worked as a mechanic and had also worked for Lake City Arsenal. He joined the Old New Garden Primitive Baptist Church in 1965 and was ordained in 1970, and had served as the church pastor for the past 39 years. Survivors include one daughter, Crystal Doss and husband, Jim, Richmond, Mo.; one son, Norman Clevenger Jr. and wife, Pat, Millville, Mo.; one brother, Kenneth Clevenger and wife, Shirley, Macon, Mo.; three sisters, Marjorie Rogers and husband, Fenton, Richmond, Mo., Elizabeth Jewell Holman and husband, Arthur, Texas, and Naomi Sharr and husband, John, Clarinda, Iowa; and five grandchildren, Emily Doss, Hunter Doss, Tricia Slade and husband, Jonathan, Tiffany Burkeybile and husband, Drew, and Norman Clevenger III and wife, Holly. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 31, at the Old New Garden Primitive Baptist Church in Excelsior Springs, Mo. Burial will be in the Old New Garden Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, March 30, at Polley Funeral Home in Richmond, Mo. The family suggests memorial contributions be given to the Old New Garden Cemetery.

May 5, 1914-March 22, 2009

After a giving, loving life Kemple Closterman, 94, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2009, at the Excelsior Springs Convalescent Center. She had gratefully accepted near-blindness, difficulty in walking and the onset of Alzheimer1s in her later years. Born Helen Kemple Reyburn on May 5, 1914, to Joseph Samuel and Lulu Blanch Reyburn in Richmond, she was the youngest of four children. She was married for 39 years to Harry Closterman, who loved and cared for her until he preceded her in death on July 14, 2007. During World War II, she was among many women who stepped forward to work at the Lake City Defense Plant, planted Victory gardens and experienced the rationing of goods. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, she brought her Hawaiian cousin and family to live in her Excelsior Springs home. Mrs. Closterman worked as a bookkeeper for several prominent automobile dealerships and as Controller for AVSCO Plastics in Excelsior Springs. Mrs. Closterman enjoyed knitting, crocheting and needlepoint. She also loved gardening and fishing with her husband. In early years she was a member of Barbee Memorial Presbyterian Church and later attended First Baptist Church in Excelsior Springs. Mrs. Closterman is survived by her sons, Charles McKee and wife, Kathi, Excelsior Springs, and Kenneth Rice and wife, Claire, Walnut Creek, Calif.; a stepdaughter, Carol Ann Closterman, Blue Springs; grandchildren, Brian McKee, Brooklyn, N.Y., Kyle McKee and wife, Laura, Columbia, Stephanie Taylor-Rice and graet-grandson, Tyler Kreutel, San Diego, Calif., Victoria Taylor-Rice, Woodland Hills, Calif., Leigh Anne Roberts and husband, Tim, Concord, Calif., and Kelly Crowley-Routh and husband, Mike, Liberty; nephews, Sam Reyburn and wife, Mary, Fairfax, Va., Roger Reyburn and wife, Elizabeth, Long Beach, Calif., Peter Reyburn and wife, Patricia, Estero, Fla., David Reyburn and wife, Karen, Kansas City, George Rice and wife, Mabel, Turner, Ore.; and a niece, Nettie (Rice) Youmans, Philomath, Ore. A memorial celebration of her life will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 28, at Polley FUneral Home Chapel, 5951 E. Highway 10, Excelsior Springs. Cremation. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations on her behalf to the Excelsior Springs Convalescent Center, 1700 Rainbow Blvd., Excelsior Springs, MO 64024.

Mary Cunningham
Mary Jean Cunningham, 59, Rayville, Mo., died Monday, March 30, 2009, at her home. Ms. Cunningham was born Feb. 24, 1950, in Excelsior Springs, the daughter of Eldin Lee and Betty Jean (Moore) King. She worked as a CNA for Sunnyview Nursing Home in Trenton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Robert E. and Charles K. King; and son, Gary Dean Holloway. Survivors include two sons, Kevin Holloway, Cameron, and Terry Holloway, Rayville; two daughters, Gina Branson, Rayville, and Tina Cook, Carrollton; sisters, Janice Lewis and Reta Swigart, both of Rayville; and 12 grandchildren.  Cremation. A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 2, at the House of Joy Church in Richmond. Arrangements are through Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs.

Mattie Danner
Mattie L. Danner, 91, Independence, Mo., died Sunday, March 8, 2009. Ms. Danner was born Feb. 28, 1918, in Orrick, the daughter of Alva and Lillie (Johnson) Rowland. She was a member of New Salem Baptist Church for 66 years and taught Sunday school for more than 40 years. She had a vegetable stand on Hwy. 24 from 1955 to 1995. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Carl Danner, in 2003. Survivors include one daughter, Nancy Tracy, Liberty; one son, Charles Danner, Buckner; one sister, Nina Lewis; one brother, Lee Roy Rowland; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 13, at New Salem Baptist Church; burial in Salem Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 12, at New Salem Funeral Home in Independence.

Kenneth Davis
Kenneth Wayne Davis, 57, Chillicothe, Mo., died Sunday, March 1, 2009, at Indian Hills Retirement Village in Chillicothe. Mr. Davis was born April 12, 1951, in Boonville, the son of John Junior and Mildred Louise (Gilbert) Davis. He was a member of the Free Methodist Church in Chillicothe. He enjoyed walking in multiple sclerosis walks. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include two daughters, Amanda Davis and Katie Davis, both of Kearney; one brother, John "Butch" Davis, Weston; and one sister, Carol Millhouse, Chillicothe. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 4, at Lindley Funeral Home in Chillicothe. There will be a family visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 3, at the funeral home, and friends may call anytime from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Chillicothe. Memorial contributions may be made to the Indian Hills Activity Fund and/or Regional Care Hospice, in care of Lindley Funeral Homes, P.O. *Mabel Denton
Mabel Mae Denton was born May 6, 1913, in Lawson, Mo., the only daughter of William Albert and Lieucreta Clevenger Lamb. She died Friday, March 27, 2009, at Primrose Place Care Center in Springfield, Missouri. She was intensely loyal and lived her life in the belief that family responsibility and reliability are important traits. After attending elementary and high school in Lawson, she became a telephone operator and cared for her parents. In 1950, after their deaths, she married Robert Denton. After his tragic death in 1952, she moved to Cameron, Mo., and worked as a telephone operator for GTE until she retired as chief operator in 1978. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; and brothers, Everet, Arlie and Marvin Lamb. She is survived by nieces, Marlene Lamb and Sandra Harvill; and nephews, Arlie Lamb Sr., Mike Lamb and Dave Lamb. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 3, at the Lawson Cemetery in Lawson, Mo. There is no public visitation scheduled. Arrangements are through Polley Funeral Home in Lawson, Mo.

*Raymond Donelson
Raymond L. Donelson, 57, of Richmond, MO., died at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 30, 2009, at his home. Mr. Donelson was born April 18, 1951, in Kansas City, Mo., to Raymond Eugene and Mary Helen (Bennett) Donelson. He married Deborah Davis of Cedar Falls, Iowa, on Nov. 30, 1970. He later married Jean Stadler of Kansas City, Mo., on May 29, 1975. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Christopher and Hollie Donelson, of Hilton Head, S.C.; three daughters and one son-in-law, Rachel Greenwood of Kearney, Mo., Katie Roach of Derby, Kan., and Veronica and Nathan Hurley of Odessa, Mo.; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Mary Louise and Joel Adams of Seattle, Wash., Lois Marie Dawkins of Bothell, Wash., and Joyce Elizabeth and Paul Steen of The Woodlands, Texas; and 11 grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Margaret Jean McNaughton. Raymond worked at Fowler Bus Company as a mechanic for 20 years. He was a lifelong Ray County area resident. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, April 3, at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond, Mo., with funeral services following at 11 a.m. Burial will be at Crowley Cemetery in Rayville, Mo., where military graveside services will be conducted by American Legion Post #237 and Richmond VFW Post #4398.

Gary L. Downs, 68, Weatherby Lake, Mo., died Sunday, March 1, 2009. Mr. Downs was born Feb. 19, 1941, in Kansas City, the son of Glenn and Hazel (Sloan) Downs. He was previously employed by Dickinson Theaters. He was a member and Kids' Connection teacher at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church in Liberty. He was preceded in death by his parents and his grandmother, Edna Mae Sloan. Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Elizabeth E. Downs, of the home; daughters, Diane Downs, Kansas City, and Sherrie Deaver, Kansas City; one sister, Glenna Walch, Escondido, Calif.; one great-granddaughter; four sisters-in-law, including Stephanie Petty and her husband, Russ, Excelsior Springs; nine nieces; eight nephews; five great-nephews; and many cousins. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 4, at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Floral Hills Chapel in Kansas City. Donald Duncan
Donald W. "Bub" Duncan, 58, died Friday, March 6, 2009, at Liberty Hospital in Liberty, Mo.  Mr. Duncan was born July 29, 1950, the son of Lewis Donald and Georgie (Phillips) Duncan.  Don served his country in the United States Army for 25 years. Upon his return to civilian life, he entered into the family business and was a co-owner of Northland Bonding Company. He was preceded in death by his father, Lewis Donald Duncan; and his sister, Nita Smith. Survivors include his wife, Karen, of the home; son, Matt Duncan, Columbia; daughters, Georgie Duncan, Dade City, Fla., Shanna Burnett, Liberty, and Lindsay Burnett, Excelsior Springs; his mother, Georgie, Gladstone; his brother, Dave Duncan, Excelsior Springs; two sisters, Susan Rose, Gladstone, and Pam Crowell, Liberty; and four grandchildren.  A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 11, at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs, with a visitation to follow.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Valley Hope Association, 1816 N. 2nd Street, Atchison, KS 66002.

Evelyn Ferguson
Evelyn Ferguson, 92, Trenton, Mo., died Friday, March 6, 2009, at the Eastview Manor Care Center in Trenton, where she had resided since Oct. 8, 2004. Mrs. Ferguson was born Jan. 3, 1917, in Grundy County, the daughter of Earl and Lottie Haines Davidson. She was married to Jack R. Ferguson on May 8, 1936; he preceded her in death on Oct. 1, 1989. She retired from Montgomery Ward. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Trenton. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Earl Dean Ferguson; a great-grandson, Christopher Berry; three brothers, Edmond, Warren, and Billie Davidson; and one sister, Grace Stokes. Survivors include one son, Gary Ferguson, Trenton; one daughter, Jackie Ballinger and her husband, Gary, Excelsior Springs; 10 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. Merle Green
Elza Merle Green, 88, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Friday, March 13, 2009, at the Excelsior Springs Convalescent Center. Mr. Green was born May 15, 1920, in Lawson, the son of Elza and Theola (Gulley) Green. He was married to Mable Lenora Green on Feb. 9, 1942; she survives of the home. He served in the United States Air Force during World War II. He owned and operated a Standard Oil station for 22 years, retiring in 1983. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Excelsior Springs. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Eldon Earl Green and Ray Green; and three sisters, Marie Dykes, Thelma Jackson and Faye Anderson.  In addition to his wife, survivors include three daughters, Patty Michael, Cowgill, Debra Culbertson, Kearney, and Julie Geeo, Kansas City; six grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 17, at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Kim Johnston
Kimberly Lee Johnston, 43, Wood Heights, Mo., died unexpectedly Friday, March 27, 2009, at Excelsior Springs Medical Center in Excelsior Springs, Mo. Mrs. Johnston was born Aug. 19, 1965, in Kansas City, the daughter of Theodore Lee and Alice Elizabeth (Orendorff) Schoonover. She was married to Terry Glenn Johnston on Sept. 14, 1985; he survives. Following her marriage she was a homemaker, raising her children and caring for her family. She had been a member of the Elkhorn School PTA. She was preceded in death by her grandparents.  In addition to her husband, survivors include three children, Andrea Ann Anderson, Cameron, Theodore August Johnston, Wood Heights, and Sara Beth Johnston, Wood Heights; her parents, Theodore and Alice Schoonover, Wood Heights; two brothers, Thomas P. Gust, Kansas City, and William Schoonover, Raytown; and one grandson. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 1, at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. Ebbie Jones
Elizabeth Ann "Ebbie" Jones, 75, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Thursday, March 26, 2009, at her home. Mrs. Jones was born Dec. 7, 1933, in Richmond, the daughter of Ira Lewis and Mable Lucille (Foley) Rogers. She was married to William Austin 3Willie2 Bishop on Dec. 7, 1950; he preceded her in death on Nov. 6, 1978. She was married to Edgar "Ed" Jones on March 26, 1986; he preceded her in death June 7, 2003. After her marriage, she was a homemaker and raised her family. In the following years she worked at various jobs and was most known for working at Ray's Lunch, the Excelsior Springs Golf Course and the bowling alley, where she continued working part-time until her health failed. She was a member of the Rayville Christian Union Church. In addition to her husbands and her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, William Mark Bishop, on July 1, 2007; three sisters, Faye Juanita Sullard-Neal, Betty Neal and Norma Shaffer-Donnelly; and two brothers, James "Buddy" Rogers and Robert "Bobby" Rogers. Survivors include two sons, Mike Bishop and Brent Bishop, both of Excelsior Springs; one sister, Helen Williams, Excelsior Springs; two brothers, Billy Ray Rogers, Richmond, and Charles Rogers, Liberty; two stepsons, Todd Jones, Lee's Summit, and Randy Jones, Bakersfield, Calif.; two grandchildren; one great-grandson; and several step-grandchildren. Shirley Leutjen
Shirley Ann Leutjen, 68, California, died Tuesday, March 24, 2009. Ms. Leutjen was born Dec. 24, 1940, in Excelsior Springs, Mo., the only child of Homer and Kathleen Hunt. She was married to Robert Allen Leutjen in May 1960, and they moved to Long Beach, Calif., where he was stationed in the Navy. They moved to Kansas City, Mo., in 1964, but returned to California in 2002 to be close to family. She and her daughter operated a store, The Blissful Soul. She attended the Unity of the Valley Church. She had survived breast cancer in 1992, but died from aggressive small cell lung cancer. Survivors include two daughters, Cheryl and Lisa; and grandchildren. A Celebration of Life was held from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, March 28, at the Women's Club in Eagle Rock in Los Angeles, Calif. Donald Looman
Donald E. Looman, 62, Kansas City North, Mo., went home to be with Jesus on March 19, 2009. Don was born Sept. 22, 1946, in Kansas City, Mo., the son of Carl and Eileen (Beear) Looman. He worked at the overhaul base for TWA from 1967 to 2004, and was a member of the International Association of Machinists Local 1650. Don was a very active member of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church. At church he volunteered in many capacities, including the Lawn Care Team, recording services, and was a dedicated member of the Disaster Relief Team. Don leaves his wife of 43 years, Doris (Caton) Looman; four children and their spouses, Angela and Brent Klusman, Gwendolyn and Larry Gann, Sarah-Ann and David Rader, and Donald Jr. and Maria Looman, all of the Kansas City area; his parents, Carl and Eileen Looman of Excelsior Springs; his sister and brother-in-law, Patricia Ann and Joe Jones of Excelsior Springs; eight grandchildren, Joshua Klusman (and wife Samantha), Whitney Klusman, BJ Ware, Chad Ware, Caden Gann, Dakota Looman, Emily Rader, and Shelby Looman; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Don also has a great-granddaughter due in April, Harper Rose Klusman. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 23, at Park Lawn Northland Chapel, I-35 at Hwy. 291, Liberty. Gordon Matthews
Gordon Matthews, 75, Lawson, Mo., died Thursday, March 12, 2009, at Liberty Hospital in Liberty, Mo. Mr. Matthews was born March 25, 1933, in Belfast, Northern Ireland, the son of George and Victoria (Gordon) Matthews. He was married to Ellen Simmons on March 8, 1956, in Cape Town, South Africa; she survives. He was educated in Ireland, then moved to Zimbabwe, where he was employed as a senior locomotive engineer on the Rhodesian Railway for eight years. In 1963 he came to Kansas City and worked at the Claycomo Ford plant. He later became a health physics technician working with various nuclear plant companies before retiring in 1992. He was preceded in death by his parents. In addition to his wife, survivors include three children, Colleen Upto, Lawson, George Matthews, Kansas, and Rose Marie Matthews, Lathrop; two brothers, William Matthews, Lawson, and Ronald Matthews, Cornwall, England; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 15, at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. Visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Inurnment will follow at the Converse Cemetery near Lathrop.

Ella VeraMae McKinney, 74, Richmond, Mo., passed away Sunday, March 8, 2009, at Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Mo. Ella was born March 3, 1935, to parents William and Elizabeth (Williams) Mesecher in Terre Haute, Ill., although she spent much of her childhood in Lomax, Ill. On Dec. 31, 1972, Ella married Chester L. McKinney in Dallas, Texas.  They lived together in Tyler, Texas, for 27 years until Chester passed away in 1998. After living on her own for a few years, Ella decided to move to Missouri in November of 2005 to be closer to her family. Ella was a lifelong member of the Nazarene Church.  Ella is survived by her brother, Wilbur Eugene Mesecher, Burlington, Iowa; her sister, Margaret Hartsock, Prescott Valley, Ariz.; two sons; two daughters; two stepsons; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-great-grandchildren; and 22 nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; six brothers; two sisters; and son, Robert W. Edward Milliman
Edward John Milliman, 93, Platte City, Mo., died Saturday, March 14, 2009, at Hillview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Platte City. Mr. Milliman was born May 23, 1915, in Warsaw, N.Y., the son of Earl James and Augusta (Steamer) Milliman. He lived in Liberty before moving to Platte City in the early 1950s, and was co-owner/operator of several businesses, including E.J. Milliman Trucking Co. in Liberty. He retired as maintenance manager from Platte County Water District #4. He was married to Nancy Gene Northern on Dec. 3, 1965. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, George W. and Earl James; one grandson, Steve Milliman; one great-granddaughter, Cynthia Taylor; and one great-great-grandson, Justin Carney. Survivors include his wife, Nancy Miliman, of the home; two sons, Don Milliman, Liberty, and James Milliman, Winston-Salem,. N.C.; two daughters, Mary Lee Tryon, Independence, and Janette Benson, Dearborn; a foster son, Brian Wegner, Gladstone; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Bertram Murphy
Bertram Agnes Bradford Murphy, 96, died Saturday, March 7, 2009, in Colorado Springs, Colo.  Ms. Murphy was born Sept. 18, 1912, in Charleston, Mo., the third of five children of Ollie Thomas Bradford and Agnes Helen Worland. She was married to Edward John Murphy on May 16, 1942; he preceded her in death on July 6, 1991. She was a school teacher and worked in Dielstadt, Mo., Kansas City, Kan., and Kansas City, Mo., retiring in 1976.  Survivors include her children, James Murphy, Elizabeth Porter, Mary Catherine Albanese, Helen Schiltz, John Murphy and Brad Murphy; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. A wake will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday, March 12, at St. Anne Catholic Church in Excelsior Springs, Mo. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Thursday, March 12, also at the church. Diane Partin
Diane Lynn Partin, 61, Richmond, Mo., died Saturday, March 14, 2009, at North Kansas City Hospital in North Kansas City, Mo. Ms. Partin was born Dec. 9, 1947, in Kansas City, the daughter of Isaac and Grace (McConnell) Engle Jr. Diane enjoyed cooking, animals and being around people. She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant son, Michael. Survivors inlcude one sister, Sharon Patison, Choctaw, Okla.; a son, Scott Carpenter, Salina, Kan.; an uncle, Marvin McConnell, Baldwin City, Kan.; two nephews and several cousins; and very dear friends, Greg and Marsha Hart and their daughter, Maddie, Lawson. George Payne
George E. Payne, 72, Richmond, Mo., died Monday, March 30, 2009, at North Kansas City Hospital in North Kansas City, Mo. Mr. Payne was born Aug. 17, 1936, in Rayville, the son of Earl and Frances (Danner) Payne. He was married to Mary Beth McAfee on Aug. 19, 1968. He was a funeral director for Gowing Funeral Homes for 15 years. He was a school bus driver for Fowler Bush Company and also a truck driver for Vandiver Farms. He had also served as Ray County Coroner for two terms. He was a member of the Richmond United Christian Presbyterian Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Bertha Fairchild. Survivors include his wife, Mary Beth Payne, of the home; two stepdaughters, Diana Adams, Richmond, and Janet Hessenflow, Gladstone; one son, George Earl Payne, Liberty; one daughter, Nancy Payne, Richmond; one sister, Nora Helt, Kearney; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 2, at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond. Visitation was held from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 1, at the funeral home. *Col. Floyd Pugh
Ret. Air Force Colonel Floyd "Puff" Junior Pugh, age 88, died Monday, March 16, 2009, in Sedalia, Mo. He was born Dec. 31, 1920, in Grinnell, Iowa, the son of Floyd Raymond and Lillian Martha (Appleby) Pugh. On April 12, 1947, at St. Stephen1s Episcopal Church in Newton, Iowa, he was married to Anne Elizabeth Copley, who survives of the home. He was raised and educated in Grinnell. After graduation, he attended Parsons College in Fairfield, Iowa. His college career was put on hold at the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps (which later became the United States Air Force) on Aug. 6, 1942, in Des Moines, Iowa. His flying career started as a young boy when he saved his newspaper money and took a ride in a Ford Tri-motor. During his career as a pilot in the USAF he flew B-24's, B-25's, B-29's, B-36's, B-47's and B-52's. He logged more than 10,000 flying hours. From 1970 until his retirement Sept. 1, 1972, he served as Base Commander at Whiteman Air Force Base. His many awards included Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal with Three Oak Leaf Clusters, Presidential Unit citation with One Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. After retirement, he received his Bachelor of Science in Business from Columbia College, Columbia, Mo. He was a member of Calvary Episcopal Church in Sedalia. He was an avid golfer. He loved American history, especially the Civil War. After retiring from the Air Force, he managed the Sedalia Airport and was instrumental in the development of the new terminal, and also worked at Tempel-Callison for a few years. Surviving are his wife of nearly 62 years, Anne Pugh; two daughters, Martha Pugh, of Fayette, Mo., and Kitt Woods and her husband, Lloyd, of Excelsior Springs, Mo.; five grandchildren, Jonas, Nell, Gardner, Aaron and Neeley; three great-grandchildren, Keaton, Audrey and Graham; a sister, Mary Ann Harbin, of Macon, Ga.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Foster and Carl; and a sister, Erma. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, March 21, in the Common Room at Calvary Episcopal Church in Sedalia. Myrtle Rademann
Myrtle Alice Wood Rademann, 83, Boonville, Mo., died Tuesday, March 17, 2009, at Cooper County Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Rademann was born Jan. 3, 1926, in Rayville, the daughter of Jesse O. and Evelena Odell Wood. She graduated from Lawson High School in Lawson, and was married to Victor George Rademann on June 22, 1961, in Excelsior Springs. Mr. Rademann preceded her in death on March 22, 1987. She taught at Scott School, worked for Montgomery Ward as a bookkeeper for 20 years and was a farmer's wife. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Lone Elm. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by one sister, Willa Sue Wood. Survivors include two children, Peggy Sue Schler, Bowling Green, and Rodney Lee Rademann, Boonville; one sister, Mildred Louise Werle, Boonville; two brothers, Harold E. Wood, Excelsior Springs, and Jesse Leon Wood, California, Mo.; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 21, at Zion Lutheran Church in Lone Elm, with the Rev. Paul Weisenborn officiating; burial will follow at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Lone Elm. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 20, at William Wood Funeral Home in Boonville. *Eleanor Risley
Eleanor Pace Risley passed away on March 1, 2009, in Kansas City, Mo., at the age of 87. She was born Jan. 21, 1922, in Dallas, Texas, to Dudley H. and Catherine M. Pace. A member of Tyler Street Methodist Church in Dallas, Texas, she graduated from Sunset High School as valedictorian. She was president of organizations including Thespian Club, Honor Society, Senior Class and Dramatic Club. She attended Southern Methodist University until the family moved to Kansas City, Mo., where she entered the University of Missouri and pledged Pi Beta Phi. When the family moved to Moline, Ill., during World War II, Mary Eleanor worked as a secretary at the Rock Island Ordnance Center. When Charles W. Risley returned from the U.S. Marines, they were married in Bethesda, Md., on July 20, 1945, then raised their three boys in Excelsior Springs, Mo. Eleanor enjoyed playing golf at the Excelsior Springs Golf Club, Liberty Hills Country Club and at their home in Mountain Lake, Lake Wales, Fla. She also enjoyed painting classes, garden club and Bible study in Florida. She was a member of the Nelson-Atkins Museum Friends of Art, the Smithsonian Institute and the Kansas City Symphony. Preceded in death by her son, David, and her husband, Bill, she is survived by sons Charles William Risley Jr. and his wife, Dianne, and Richard Ogden Risley and his wife, Regina; grandchildren, Heather Dial, Charles Risley III, Shawn Risley, Justin Risley, Vicki Gravert and Jennifer Risley; and seven great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 5, at the Masonic Cemetery in Excelsior Springs. Eleanor will lie in state from noon to 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, at Bross & Spidle Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. Memorial contributions may be made to the Excelsior Springs Hospital Foundation.

Charles Rodgers Jr.
Charles Chester Rodgers Jr. 86, Richmond, Mo., died Tuesday, March 31, 2009, in Pleasant Hill, Mo. Mr. Rodgers was born Aug. 13, 1922, in Henrietta, to Charles Chester and Charlene Agnes (Whitmer) Rodgers He was married to Mildred Sheets on March 3, 1946. He worked for Ford Motor Company for 20 years before retiring in 1985. He was co-owner of Rodger and Lee Construction and Santa Fe Glass. He was a member of Richmond First Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Adeline Bryant and Faye Andreas. Survivors include one son, Larry Wayne Rodgers, Evansville, Ind.; one daughter, Nancy Ann Donovan, Pleasant Hill; one brother; one sister; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 4, at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond, with visitation from 10 to 11 a.m. Burial with military graveside services in Richmond Memory Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to Crossroads Hospice or Lawson Manor.

Genevieve Seedorff
Genevieve M. Seedorff, 84, died Wednesday, March 25, 2009. Ms. Seedorff was born May 2, 1924, in Arlington, Iowa, the daughter of Dewey and Estella Thompson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leslie Seedorff; brother, Keith Thompson; sons, Dean and John Seedorff; daughter, Diane Layman; and grandson, Christopher Seedorff. Survivors include her brother, Kenneth Thompson, Lisbon, Iowa; sister, Mary Alta Hunt, Oelwein, Iowa; daughters, Alice Dennis, Linda Amos and Brenda Ray, all of Independence, nd Vonna Seedorff, Topeka, Kan.; son, Randall Seedorff, Liberty, Mo.; 14 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 28, at Clay County Christian Church, 1200 Route B, Liberty. Private interment.

Mary Sheets

Mary Kathrine Sheets, 50, Concordia, Mo., died Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at I-70 Medical Center in Sweet Springs, Mo. Mrs. Sheets was born Jan. 27, 1959, in Kansas City, the daughter of Orville E. and Ellenor (Moore) Phillips. She was married to John C. Sheets Jr. on May 24, 1977. She was a loving housewife. She was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include her husband, John C. Sheets Jr., of the home; son, Carl Sheets, Warsaw; daughter, Cristie Holt, Excelsior Springs; sister, Linda Phillips, Concordia; and three grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, March 6, at the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville.  A visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Friday at Polley Funeral Home in Richmond.


Lewis Still
Lewis Vaun Still, 81, Osceola, Mo. (formerly of Richmond, Mo.), died Tuesday, March 31, 2009. Funeral services were set for 2 p.m. Friday, April 3, at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond, Visitation was set for 1 to 2 p.m., with Masonic services at 1:45 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Richmond Masonic Lodge Building Fund 3.

John Timberlake Sr.
John A. Timberlake Sr., 90, Kansas City, Mo., died Sunday, March 15, 2009, at his home. Mr. Timberlake was born Oct. 26, 1918, in DeKalb, the son of John and Aro Timberlake. He was employed by the U.S. Post Office, Department of Agriculture, Department of Defense and, after he retired, by Sears. He was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister. Survivors include his wife, Marie, of the home; three sons, John Timberlake Jr., Riverside, Keith A. Timberlake, Harrisonville, and Kevin Timberlake, Lawson; one daughter, Denise Sills, St. Charles; one sister, Marjorie Cramer, Falls City, Neb.; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 18, at White Chapel Funeral Home in Gladstone. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 17, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to cancer research, in care of the American Cancer Society, or to Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Kansas City.

Sybil Walter
Sybil Manley Walter, 90, Excelsior Springs, Mo. (formerly of Rayville, Mo.), died Sunday, March 1, 2009, at the Excelsior Springs Nursing & Rehab Center. Ms. Walter was born July 27, 1918, in Rayville, the daughter of William F. and Josephine (Hill) Hankins. She was first married to Gerald E. Manley, and then later to Raymond Walter; they both preceded her in death. She was a member of Rayville Christian Union Church. She lived most of her life in Rayville before moving to Excelsior Springs in 2002. In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by her special friend and companion, Johnny Bowman. Survivors include one son, William Manley, Excelsior Springs; one daughter, Geraldine Brown, Lawson; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 3, at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond. Visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Dockery Cemetery in Dockery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Rayville Christian Union Church Memorial Fund.

Georgie Wright
Georgie I. Wright, 79, Paola, Kan., died Wednesday, March 11, 2009, at Olathe Medical Center in Olathe, Kan. Survivors include sons, Stephen Wright, Olathe, Kan., and Terence Wright, Osawatomie, Kan.; and daughter, Nancy Darling, Excelsior Springs, Mo. Services were held Monday, March 16, at the Osawatomie Cemetery.
