Rev. Daniel Bengston
The Rev. Daniel Alfred Bengston, 87, Richmond, Mo., died Monday, Jan. 26, 2009. Visitation was held from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, at Richmond United Methodist Church, followed by services at 2 p.m. Burial with military honors in New Hope Cemetery, north of Hardin. Arrangements are through Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond.
*Donald Chappel
Donald E. Chappel, 70, Excelsior Springs, Mo., passed away Sunday, Jan. 18, 2009, at his home. Don was born March 16, 1938, in Richmond, Mo., the son of Daniel W. and Gladys (Williams) Chappel. He attended school in Liberty, Mo. On Aug. 26, 1955, he married Irene (Sloan) Chappel. He served in the U.S. Air Force. He worked for Vendo Company of Kansas City, Mo., for more than 20 years. Don loved fishing and hunting. He also loved his wife, children, grandchildren and friends. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Irene Chappel, of the home; one daughter, Sabra Morgan and husband, Jerry, Excelsior Springs, Mo.; one son, Jeff Chappel and wife, Jenifer, Excelsior Springs, Mo.; four grandchildren, Carissia, Sabrina, Hunter, and Hope; three stepgrandchildren, Leslie, Stephen, and Geri; seven stepgreat-grandchildren, all of Excelsior Springs, Mo.; one brother, Richard Chappel and wife, Louise, Poplar Bluff, Mo.; a brother-in-law, Jerry Sloan and wife, Barbara, Excelsior Springs, Mo.; sister-in-law, Judy Stephenson, Excelsior Springs, Mo.; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 22, at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, at the funeral home. Burial in the Crown Hill Cemetery in Excelsior Springs. Memorial contributions may be made to the Don Chappel Memorial Fund, in care of Polley Funeral Home.
Lloyd Cooper Sr.
Lloyd Eugene Cooper Sr., 56, Liberty, Mo., died Friday, Jan. 23, 2009. Services will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27, at Church-Archer-Pasley Funeral Home in Liberty; cremation. Visitation will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
"Jack" Cox
Jackie Lee "Jack" Cox, 57, Richmond, Mo., died Monday, Jan. 5, 2009. Funeral services were scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond; burial in Richmond Memory Gardens. Visitation was held from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 8, at the funeral home.
Wanda Curtis
Wanda June Curtis, 71, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Monday, Jan. 26, 2009, at her home. Mrs. Curtis was born Feb. 14, 1937, in Braymer, the daughter of Thomas R. and Lottie E. (Phillips) Cox. She was married to Howard C. Curtis on May 27, 1955; he survives. She was raised in the Braymer area before her family moved to Excelsior Springs. Following her marriage, she had worked for Excelsior Springs Hospital and for various doctors' offices in Excelsior Springs and Liberty before retiring in the early 1980s. She was a member of Woodland Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Bennie Cox and Gerald Cox. In addition to her husband, survivors include a daughter, Kim Curtis Willis, Excelsior Springs; one son, Deron R. Curtis, Kearney; two sisters, Winifred Wyrick, Bonner Springs, Kan., and Virginia Basham, Kansas City; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30, at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. Burial will be in the Masonic Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, at the funeral home, with an Eastern Star service at 7:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Kansas City Hospice.
James Dill
James W. Dill, 80, Blue Springs, Mo., died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Blue Springs. Mr. Dill was born June 15, 1928, in Elkhart, Ind., the son of Benjamin and Mabel Dill. He mainly worked as a sheet rock installer in the construction industry. He was married to Neva J. Davenport on June 15, 1950. He was preceded in death by his wife; daughters, Neva Marie Shoemaker and Barbara Palmer; and brothers, Clifford and Benjamin Dill. Survivors include sons, Bill Norris, Norborne, and Allen Norris, Blue Springs; daughter, June Moore, Kansas City; sisters-in-law, Roberta O'Dell and Sandy Davenport, both of Excelsior Springs; and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. Cremation. A memorial visitation will be held from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 18, at his son Allen's residence at 706 N.W. B Street, Blue Springs. Arrangements are through Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. Debbie Ewing
Debbie Ann Ewing, 48, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009, at Liberty Hospital in Liberty, Mo. Ms. Ewing was born Oct. 28, 1960, in Minneapolis, the daughter of William M. and Mable C. (Schurer) Ewing. She and her family moved from Bloomington, Minn., to Miami, Fla., where she graduated from high school. She worked in several hotels before moving to Excelsior Springs in 1990. For the past 18 years, she lied at Superior Park Assisted Living Center. She was of the Lutheran faith. She was preceded in death by her mother on Feb. 16, 2007; paternal grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. T.H. Ewing; and maternal grandmother, Lucille Schurer. Surviving include her father, William Ewing, Lewisville, Texas; one son, David Ewing, Lewisville, Texas; one sister, Nancy Boliver, Lewisville, Texas; and one granddaughter. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, at Superior Park Assisted Living Center, 410 Superior Street, Excelsior Springs. Cremation. Kenneth Gardner
Kenneth Ray Gardner, 64, Kearney, Mo., died Friday, Jan. 16, 2009, at Liberty Hospital in Liberty, Mo. Mr. Gardner was born Feb. 18, 1944, in Kansas City, the son of Homer B. and Ethel Marie Hopkins Gardner. At the age of 19, he owned and operated Kenny's Auto Repair in Riverside. Later he worked for North Supply, an electrical supplier, before entering the wholesale grocery business as a maintenance engineer. He worked for Associated Wholesale Grocery until 1979, when he moved to Houston, Texas, and worked for Grocery Supply for 30 years before he retired in 1998. In 1999, he moved to Kearney to be near his family. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Bruce Gardner. Survivors include his sister, Donna Klepper, Kearney; two brothers, Robert Gardner, Liberty, and James Gardner, Smithville; six nephews; and 12 great-nephews and -nieces. Cremation. A memorial service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22, at Fry-Bross and Spidle Chapel in Kearney. Friends may call from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Lung Association.
Wilma L. Green
Wilma L. Green, 82, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2009, at Pleasant Valley Manor in Liberty, Mo. Ms. Green was born June 14, 1926, in Vibbard, the third child of Bertha and Joseph Eberle. She was married to Allen "Buck" Green on May 11, 1948, and together were successful farmers near Vibbard. They had none of their own, but they both loved children and often left candy and cookies on their front porch for kids getting off their bus. After Buck died March 16, 1989, Ms. Green sold the farm and moved into Excelsior Springs. There she often volunteered at the senior center until her health failed and she had to move into assisted living and later into Pleasant Valley Manor in December 2008. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, who died of a pneumonia infection at the age of only six weeks. Survivors include her older brother, Alvy Edward "Ed" Eberle, Liberty; one nephew, Gary Eberle, Kansas City North; one niece, Betty Jo Platt, Liberty; and other relatives, including Allen's niece, Belinda Sapp, Excelsior Springs; and several great-nieces and -nephews. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, at Polley Funeral Home in Lawson. Visitation will be held from noon until the time of the service Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Lawson Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Diabetes Association or Three Rivers Hospice.
*Kathryn Greenway
Kathryn Mourene Peery Greenway, 90, passed away Thursday, Jan. 1, 2009, at the Excelsior Springs Convalescent Center in Excelsior Springs, Mo., where she had made her home for the past 16 months. She was born Jan. 9, 1917, near Brimson, Mo., the daughter of William Homer and Anna Shaw Peery. She was married to Bobby V. Greenway on June 13, 1948, near Trenton, Mo. Mrs. Greenway taught school in several rural schools in Grundy County, Mo., Auxvasse, Mo., and Center School in Kansas City, Mo. She was a substitute teacher in the Excelsior Springs School District for many years. She was a graduate of Kirksville College. She moved to Excelsior Springs in 1960. She was a member of Barbee Memorial Presbyterian Church in Excelsior Springs, where she taught Sunday school and was active in women of the church activities. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; sisters, Fauntine Peery Gleason and Alice Peery Kuhn; a brother, Woodson Peery; a son-in-law, John Wright; and a nephew, Walter Peery. She is survived by a brother, Stan Peery, Jamesport, Mo.; two sisters, Virginia Tolle and Phyllis Anderson, both of Trenton, Mo.; two daughters, Vicki A. Wright and Susan K. (Dean) Dagley, Excelsior Springs; four grandchildren, Robert Wright, Russell Wright, Deana Branson and Jared Dagley; and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009, at Barbee Memorial Presbyterian Church in Excelsior Springs. Burial in Hillcrest Cemetery in Excelsior Springs. Wilma Harris
Wilma Maxine Harris, 84, Liberty, Mo., died Friday, Jan. 23, 2009, at Pleasant Valley Manor. Funeral services were held Monday at Church-Archer-Pasley Funeral Home in Liberty; burial in Glenridge Cemetery.
Florence Hoyt
Florence Eugenia Hoyt, 93, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Jan. 30, 2009, at her home. Ms. Hoyt was born March 3, 1915, in Everett, Wash., the daughter of John and Olga Wickstrom. She was married to her childhood sweetheart, Henry Backstrom, who preceded her in death. She was later married to Vernon Hoyt, a photographer, who also preceded her in death. She was church organist for several churches in the area for many years. She gave piano lessons. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Kansas City. In addition to her parents and her husbands, she was preceded in death by a sister, Anne Lamar. Survivors include one son, Ed Backstrom and wife, Sharron, Kearney; and longtime caregivers, Sabra and Jerry Morgan, Excelsior Springs. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs, with visitation one hour prior. Cremation. Inurnment at a later date at Memorial Park in Kansas City. Memorial contributions may be made to the Good Samaritan Center of Excelsior Springs.
Rev. Leo Jenkins
The Rev. Leo Dale Jenkins, 75, Richmond, Mo., died Friday, Jan. 16, 2009. Services were set for 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond. Visitation was held from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19, at the funeral home. Burial in Missouri state Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville. Anna Krager
Anna Bell Krager, 82, Columbia, Mo., died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2009, at her home. Ms. Krager was born Oct. 12, 1926, in Napton, the daughter of Enoch and Mabel Nicely Hinton. She was married to Clyde Krager on Dec. 14, 1947. She volunteered for more than 20 years at a well-baby clinic through a local church while living in Kansas City. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five sisters and one brother. Survivors include her husband, Clyde Krager; her children, MIke Krager, San Diego, Calif., Karen Stevens, Kearney, Brenda Engdahl, Desert Hot Springs, Calif., and Linda Lightfoot, Millersburg; one sister, Irene Metzger, San Jose, Calif.; one brother, Bob Hinton, Windsor; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, at Memorial Funeral Home in Columbia; burial in Memorial Park Cemetery. "Debbie" Lackey
Deborah Jean "Debbie" Lackey, 58, Liberty, Mo., died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2009, at Liberty Hospital in Liberty, Mo. Mrs. Lackey was born Dec. 23, 1950, the daughter of Charles and Grace (Franklin) Wetzel. She was married to George 3Gene2 Lackey on Aug. 15, 1972. She was a homemaker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Johnnie Wetzel; and one sister, Jackie Wetzel. Survivors include her husband, George "Gene" Lackey, of the home; two sons, Shawn Wetzel, Gladstone, and Scott Lackey, Excelsior Springs; two daughters, Stacey Esponiza and Sarah Lackey, both of Liberty; five brothers, Danny Wetzel, Charles Wetzel, Duane Wetzel, Ronnie Wetzel and Mike Wetzel; two sisters, Cheryl Bowles and Brenda Wicker; and 11 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services on Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Polley Cemetery, Excelsior Springs.
*Harold Marten
Harold Dale Marten, 87, Richmond, Mo., died at 9:26 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009, at the North Kansas City Hospital, North Kansas City, Mo. Mr. Marten was born Feb. 28, 1921, in Wamego, Kan., to Albert and Nellie (Dawe) Marten. He married Mardelle Heins of Blackburn, Mo., on Sept. 11, 1949; she preceded him in death on Aug. 31, 2005. Survivors include one son, Steven Marten of Richmond; one daughter, Brenda Marten of Richmond; and one sister, Nellouise Tyler and her husband, Al, of Topeka, Kan. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Lester, Robert and Willard; and one sister, Reva Ebert. Dale was a 1939 graduate of the Wamego High School, where he participated in football, basketball and track. He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a line worker for GM Motors' Fairfax Plant for 30 years until retiring in 1976. He was a charter member of the Faith Lutheran Church in Richmond. After retirement, he kept busy working at various local places in Richmond. Dale was a member of the Richmond VFW and the American Legion. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Faith Lutheran Church in Richmond. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, at the Faith Lutheran Church in Richmond. Visitation will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond. Burial will be at Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Blackburn, Mo. Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond is in charge of the arrangements.
Sheila Martin
Sheila Elizabeth Martin, 70, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009, at her home. Ms. Martin was born July 2, 1938, in Birkenhide, England, the daughter of Fredrick George and Ann Kathleen Brown Savage. She worked in manufacturing and was a homemaker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Donald. Survivors include one son, James Martin, of the home; daughter-in-law, Kim Smith; granddaughters, Aireal Tribble and Alesia Young; and siblings, Jean Quinn, Vera Walsh, Kathleen Hellon, Freda Savage, Molly Savage and Fred Savage, all of England. James McGlasson
James M. McGlasson, 73, Lawson, Mo., died Sunday, Jan. 25, 2009, at his home. Mr. McGlasson was born Feb. 11, 1935, in Huzzah, Mo., the son of Oscar and Ruth (Potter) McGlasson. He was married to Hazel (Sousley) McGlasson on Aug. 12, 1972. He retired from Ford Motor Company, and also worked in heating and cooling. He was a member of the Lawson Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers. Survivors include his wife, Hazel McGlasson, of the home; one daughter, Melissa Duncan, Rayville; two stepdaughters, Pamela Barrett, Holt, and Teresa Edwards, Liberty; two sisters, Vivian Baker, Cherryville, and Georgia Werner, Rolla; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, at the Lawson Baptist Church in Lawson. There will be a Masonic service begining at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the church. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, at the Steelville Cemetery in Steelville. Arrangements are through Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. Mary McKissack
Mary Frances McKissack, 101, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Thursday, Jan. 15, 2009. Ms. McKissack was born June 10, 1907, in Warrensburg, the daughter of Charles E. and Lillie Porter Park. She worked as a medical secretary and was active in several civic organizations. She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church and was currently a member of Flack Memorial Christian Union Church. She was married to Paul Wayne McKissack on Aug. 15, 1928. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Wayne McKissack. Survivors include two nieces, Faye Smith, Kansas City, and Linda McKissack, Columbia; one nephew, Sammy Barger, Rayville; a cousin, Billie Fenton, Colorado; special friends, Gary and Brenda McKown and Debbie Napier. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19, at Flack Memorial Christian Union Church in Excelsior Springs; burial at Hillcrest Cemetery in Excelsior Springs. Dane Nelson
Dane William Nelson, 22, St. Joseph, Mo. (formerly of Kearney, Mo.), died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2009, as the result of a single-car auto accident in Clinton County, Mo. Mr. Nelson was born March 7, 1986, in North Kansas City, Mo., the son of Tim and Ellen Chick Nelson. He was reared in the Kearney/Holt area and was a 2004 graduate of Kearney High School. He graduated from Central Methodist University in 2008 with a teaching degree in music, and was a music teacher in Maysville and the director of the Praise Band at First United Methodist Church in Kearney. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, James W. Chick. Survivors include his wife, Mallory, of the home; his parents, Tim and Ellen Nelson, Holt; a sister, Kirstin Mariott, Kirkwood; his maternal grandmother, Jane Chick, Brookfield; and his paternal grandparents, Ed and Shirley Nelson. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, at First UnitedMethodist Church in Kearney; burial in Fairview Cemetery. Arrangements are through Fry-Bross and Spidle Funeral Home in Kearney.
Phyllis O'Dell
Phyllis Jane O'Dell, 77, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Monday, Jan. 19, 2009, at her home. Mrs. O'Dell was born March 22, 1931, in Excelsior Springs, the daughter of Kenneth Lee and Adina (Craven) Thompson. She was married to Lloyd Ivan O'Dell on July 3, 1953; he preceded her in death on Sept. 27, 1991. She was a lifelong resident of Excelsior Springs. She worked as a secretary for several doctors' offices and the gas company, and also for Job Corps, Liberty Hospital and Excelsior Springs Hospital until her retirement in 1984. Following retirement, she and her husband went into the catering business until he passed away. She was a member of Woods Memorial Christian Church. In addition to her husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Mike O'Dell, on April 15, 2004. Survivors include two sons, Pat O'Dell, Manchester, N.H., and Kelly O'Dell, Excelsior Springs; one daughter-in-law, Sherry O'Dell, Excelsior Springs; one sister, Delores Bush, Excelsior Springs; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, at Hillcrest Cemetery in Excelsior Springs. There is no public visitation scheduled. Sterling Parker
Sterling Parker, formerly of Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2009, at St. Jude's Hospital near his home in Brea, Calif. Mr. Parker was preceded in death by his parents, Jewell and Virginia Parker; brother, Glenn Parker; and sisters, Esther Mansell, Muriel Daughters, Anna Sue Baker, Nance Pendleton and Hilda Campbell. Survivors include his wife, Betty; son, Price, wife, Gennie, and three grandsons; one brother, Ronald Parker, Tupelo, Miss.; and three sisters, Mary Kennell, Alamo, Texas, Wilma Bassett, Excelsior Springs, and Dorothy Heavelow, Wood Heights. Services are pending.
Ed Perry
Ed M. Perry, 42, Lawson, Mo., died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009, at his home. Mr. Perry was born April 29, 1966, in Kansas City, the son of Jimmie L. and Nora Lee (Hagerman) Perry. He was married to Christine (Gardner) Perry on June 6, 1992. He was Chief Pharmacist for the Excelsior Springs Medical Center. He was also a member of the "Liberty Highway" gospel band. Survivors include his wife, Chris, of the home; his parents, Jimmie and Nora Lee Perry, Cleveland, Mo.; one brother, David Perry, Harrisonville; one sister, Cheryl Nissen, Belton; and other relatives. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 9, at Polley Funeral Home in Lawson. Burial will be in the Lawson Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services on Friday at the funeral home.
Lawrence L. Perry
Lawrence Leonard Perry, 84, Excelsior Springs, Mo. (formerly of Liberty, Mo.), died Thursday, Jan. 29, 2009, at Valley Manor in Excelsior Springs. Mr. Perry was born March 23, 1924, in Dardenell, Ark., the son of Talmage and Elnora (Pope) Perry. He was married to Clara Turner, who preceded him in death. After serving as a Buffalo Soldier in the U.S. Army during the 1940s, he later worked for the Englander Mattress Factory for 18 years. He was also employed by North Kansas City State Bank for 15 years before retiring in 1988. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Liberty and had served in several capacities in that congregation. In addition to his wife and his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Alice Houston. Survivors include one son, Reggie Perry, Excelsior Springs; one daughter, Angela Perry, Altadena, Calif.; one sister, Nellie Henderson, Pacoima, Calif.; and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, at the First Baptist Church of Liberty. Burial with military honors will be at Mount Moriah Terrace Park Cemetery in Kansas City. Helen Marguerite Powell, 94, died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009, at Ashton Court in Liberty, Mo. Mrs. Powell was born June 10, 1914, in Pillager, Minn., the daughter of Sadie (Dade) and Charles O. Hagelin. She was a longtime resident of Overland Park, Kan. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter H. Powell; two infant children; two sons, Donald K. Powell and Gary W. Powell; and a sister, Hazel Kerrick. Survivors include two daughters, Audrey Sue Morrow, Kansas City, and Rosalie Minor, Liberty; eight grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. A visitation will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 2, at McGilley & Hoge Memorial Chapel in Overland Park, Kan., with services to follow at 11 a.m. Private burial in Lenexa, Kan.
Joyce Price-Ross
L. Joyce Price-Ross, 63, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2009, at her home. Ms. Price-Ross was born Feb. 12, 1945, in Mosby, the daughter of Lester Eugene and Velma (McCoy) Dagley. She was preceded in death by her father; husband, Robert M. Price; husband, Monte L. Ross; her brother, Wayne Dagley; and her sister, Roberta Coble. Survivors include her companion, James Melton, Excelsior Springs; daughters, Delinda Warner, Excelsior Springs, Brenda Latting, Kansas City, and Glenda J. Winsor, Excelsior Springs; mother, Velma Dagley, Excelsior Springs; brother, Keith Dagley, Kearney; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. A visitation will be held an hour beforehand, also at the funeral home. Burial will take place at Crown Hill Cemetery in Excelsior Springs. The family asks that guests dress casually. Memorial contributions may be made to Kansas City Hospice.
"Doc" Robinson
Richard R. "Doc" Robinson Jr., D.O., 86, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2008. Dr. Robinson was born Jan. 31, 1922, in Kansas City, Mo., the son of Richard R. Robinson Sr. and Irene M. Dillon Robinson. He practiced medicine in Excelsior Springs and Concordia. He was married to Marian Reynolds in 1954. In 1969, he became officer in charge of the domiciliary clinic at the Veterans Administration Center in Leavenworth, Kan. He retired from federal service in 1986. He was an active member of Leavenworth Baptist Church for many years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marian Robinson. Survivors include his sister, Jane Robinson Edwards, Ormond Beach, la.; four children, Deborah A. Robinson, Concordia, Richard R. Robinson and Lawrence J. Robinson, both of Conroe, Texas, and Marian K. Robinson, Prairie Village, Kan.; and two granddaughters. A memorial service was scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, at Eisenhower VA Medical Center Chapel in Leavenworth, Kan. Inurnment will be held at a later date at Concordia Baptist Cemetery in Concordia, Mo. Memorial contributions may be made to the Concordia Baptist Church.

Helen Boxey Ronan, 93, Marceline, Mo., died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009, at Liberty Terrace Care Center in Liberty, Mo. Ms. Ronan was preceded in death by her husband, James Thomas "Juicy" Ronan, an engineer for the Santa Fe Railroad; and a son, Thomas Ronan Jr., on April 8, 2005. Survivors include one son, Paul Ronan, Kearney; one grandson, Kyle Ronan, Marceline; and other relatives. Martha Sharp
Martha L. Sharp, 67, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009, at her home. Mrs. Sharp was born May 13, 1941, in Excelsior Springs, the daughter of Ancel and Georgia Mae Duncan Smith. She was married to James Sharp on Jan. 1, 1964. She was a housewife and a member of Old New Garden Church. She was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include her husband of 45 years, James Sharp; one son, Dan Sharp; one daughter, Pam Gray; and two grandchildren. Dorothy Shoop
Dorothy Lucille Shoop, 93, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009. She was born July 7, 1915, in Omaha, Neb., the daughter of Walter F. Knight and his wife, Norma O. Hicks Knight. Dorothy graduated from high school in Shawnee, Okla., in 1931. She worked as a public stenographer in the Aldrich Hotel. Later, she became secretary for a local lawyer. About the start of World War II, Dorothy moved to Las Vegas, Nev., and served as secretary to the head of the Army Air Force Gunnery School. Dorothy married Virgil Van Shoop on Oct. 1, 1944, at the First United Methodist Church in Las Vegas. As Virgil was in the military and later worked for U.S. Public Health, they lived in various places in the United States but remained members of the Las Vegas church for their lifetimes. After Virgil's retirement, they purchased a home in Las Vegas while also maintaining a residence in Kansas City, Mo. Dorothy came to live in Excelsior Springs in 1996. She began her college studies while living in California and became a graduate of the University of Missouri-Kansas City. She was a member of the UMKC Alumni Association. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, French Russell; their baby daughter, Norma Lucille Russell; and her husband for more than 55 years, Virgil Shoop. Survivors are two sisters, Norma Knight Cooper, of Shawnee, Okla., and Estella Knight Morrison, of Excelsior Springs; three nieces and their spouses, Evelyn and Edgar Kinkade, of Columbia, Mo., Norma and Don James, of Midland, Texas, and Rebecca Griffen, of Springfield, Mo.; and great- and great-great-grandnieces and -nephews. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, at the chapel in Fairview Cemetery, Shawnee, Okla. Pallbearers will be Edgar Kinkade, Don James, great-nephews, Steve James, Joe James, Jay Wickware, and great-grandnephew, Jeffrey Wickware. Duane Snodgrass
Duane Nolan Snodgrass, 45, Polo, Mo., died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009. Mr. Snodgrass was born Jan. 7, 1964, in Richmond, the son of Joe and Mary Lou Snodgrass. He was a cattelman and farmer, a member of Knoxville Community Church and had served on the Ray County Farm Bureau. At the time of his death he was on the Polo School Board. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife of 21 years, Gina (Curp) Snodgrass; two children, Spencer and Avery, of the home; and a sister, Darla Schreier. David Snow
James David Snow, 58, Rayville, Mo., died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2009, at his home. Mr. Snow was born Jan. 24, 1950, in Excelsior Springs, Mo., the son of Ambrose and Mable (Vassmer) Snow. He served two tours during the Vietnam War with the United States Army Special Forces. After serving his country, he worked as an explosives engineer in the demolition and construction industries. He was married to Debbie Lang on April 3, 1980. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Debbie Snow, of the home; and numerous cousins and friends. Cremation. Joan St. John
Joan Marie St. John, 76, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Thursday, Jan. 15, 2009, at North Kansas City Hospital in North Kansas City, Mo. Mrs. St. John was born Nov. 4, 1932, in Plattsmouth, Neb., the daughter of Howard U. and Deloris (McKinney) Ballinger. She was married to Donald Andrew "Pete" St. John on May 15, 1950; he preceded her in death on Aug. 7, 2002. She was a homemaker and later worked as a cashier for Ben Franklin and the AG Grocery Store. She had been employed by the Excelsior Springs School District as a cook and baker before she retired in 1988. She was of the Christian faith. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Larry Wayne St. John, on Feb. 29, 2008; and brothers, Howard Ballinger, John Ballinger and two brothers in infancy. Survivors include one daughter, Pamela Jones, Excelsior Springs; three sons, Mark St. John and Tommy St. John, both of Excelsior Springs, and Donnie St. John, Wood Heights; one brother, Harvey Ballinger, Lawson; one sister, Norma Inman, Wakefield, Kan.; one half-brother, Ronald Ballinger, Corning, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A memorial visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22, at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. Cremation.
Vivian Stenner
Vivian Marie Stenner, 89, Kearney, Mo., died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009. Mrs. Stenner was born Aug. 29, 1919, in Unionville, the daughter of Zora Finis and Golda Jane Lane. She worked for serveral years beside her husband at Stenner Brothers Machine Products in Kansas City. She was an active member of Providence Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband of 70 years, J.T. Stenner; four children, Barbara Carney, Jesse Stenner, Ester Ferrell and Linda Frick; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. M. Christine Stonum, 102, formerly of Lawson, Mo., died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2009, in Kansas City, Mo. Christine was born Jan. 31, 1907, in Lathrop, the daughter of William and Lucy Handy. She was married to Joe H. McCollough in 1926 and helped with the dairy farm until 1972, when she moved into Lawson after Joe's death. Christine was active in Lawson United Christian and Presbyterian Church. She sold Avon Cosmetics for 25 years in Ray County and enjoyed sewing for grandchildren. Christine was a member of Business Professional Women, Klever Kraft Klub, Platte-Clay Electric and PEO. Christine traveled to Israel, Spain, Portugal, the Caribbean, the Scandinavian countries, Canada, Mexico and all 50 states. In 1978 Christine married Robert C. Stonum of Lawson, and they were together 18 years. They traveled to Yuma, Ariz., every winter for 15 years. Christine was preceded in death by husband Joe H. McCollough, husband Robert C. Stonum and son Robert J. McCollough. She is survived by her son, Gary McCollough and daughter-in-law, Marilyn, of Kansas City, Mo.; daughter-in-law, Jan McCollough, of Seattle, Wash.; stepson, Robert A. Stonum and wife, Marian, of Lawson, Mo.; granddaughter, Gay Lynn McCollough Korff and husband, Rob, of Norborne, Mo.; granddaughter, Shari McCollough Albright and husband, Chris, of Kansas City, Mo.; granddaughter, Stacy McCollough Trunnel and husband, Jack, of Sammamish, Wash.; grandson, Todd McCollough and wife, Bobbie, of Seattle, Wash.; stepgrandson, John Stonum and wife, Denise, of Lawson, Mo.; stepgranddaughter, Kathy Stonum McQuerrey and husband, Rick, of Lawson, Mo.; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, at Lawson United Christian and Presbyterian Church; visitation will be held during the hour prior at the church, and a graveside service at Lawson Cemetery will follow. Anthony Teague
Anthony Virgil Teague, 85, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009, at the Excelsior Springs Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Mr. Teague was born Nov. 13, 1923, in Stone County, Ark., the daughter of Ross and Edna (Sullivan) Teague. He was married to Agnes Agazine Shelton on Dec. 18, 1948. He worked as an operating engineer in the construction industry for many years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Joyce Teague; and a brother, Raymond Oscar Teague. Survivors include his wife, Agnes A. Teague, of the home; daughter, Joyce Boone, Lawson; son, Russell Teague, Lawson; sisters, Lorene Hamlet, Lawson, and Ruth Dyer, Holt; brothers, Nathan Teague, Claypool, Ariz., and John Teague, Lawson; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Mae Belle Teague
Mae Belle Teague, 76, Lee's Summit, Mo., died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2009, at Seasons Care Center in Lee's Summit. Ms. Teague was born June 1, 1932, in Whitney, Ark., the daughter of Irvin Milo and Alice Gracie (Freeman) Shelton. She was married to James Austin Teague on Jan. 7, 1950, and they spent most of their lives together in Lawson, Mo. Survivors include sons, Jim Teague and Timothy J. Teague, both of Kansas City; daughters, Joan Weatherd, St. Joseph, and Janet Hawkins, Lee's Summit; seven grandchildren: and 10 great-grandchildren. Alva Viles
Alva P. Viles, 87, died Monday, Jan. 12, 2009. Mr. Viles was born in St. Joseph, Ill., the son of George and Lettie Viles. He had been a member of the Ironworkers Local #10 since 1947. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Louise; three brothers; and one sister. Survivors include two sons, Velton Viles, Belton, Mo., and Terry Viles, Raymore, Mo.; two daughters, Vicki Moreno, Lee's Summit, Mo., and Teresa Thornton, Lawson, Mo.; one brother; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Luella J. Wheeler, 86, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2009. Ms. Wheeler was born May 19, 1922, in Hitchcock, S.D., the daughter of Albert and Amelia Ahrendt. She was married to Denver Wheeler on Dec. 15, 1941. She was preceded in death by her husband and a stepson, Denver E. Wheeler. Survivors include three daughters, Nadeane Friess, Goddard, Kan., Sharon Pribil, Topeka, Kan., and Sandra Evans, Liberty, Mo.; one brother, Lyle Ahrendt, Verndale, Minn.; two sisters, Heretha Griffel, Newell, Iowa, and Donna Reed, Alexandra, Minn.; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Weldon White
Weldon Lindell White, 68, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Friday, Jan. 16, 2009, at the KU Medical Center. Mr. White was born April 30, 1940, in California, the son of Oliver Weldon and Clara Jane (Lindsey) White. He was married to Betty Jean Penka on Aug. 11, 1960, in Belpre, Kan.; she survives of the home. He had been employed with BKD, LLP Accounting in Kansas City for a number of years. He was preceded in death by his father, who was killed in action at the end of World War II; and one sister, Cheryl Spencer. In addition to his wife, survivors include his mother, Clara Jane Spencer, Eldorado Springs; three daughters, Sonya Mills, Parkville, Laura White, Kansas City, and Valerie Staponski, Excelsior Springs; one son, Tim White, Pleasant Hill; three brothers, Wayne White and Darrell Matthews, both of Eldorado Springs, and Jerry Matthews, Knob Noster; two stepsisters; two stepbrothers; and seven grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19, at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs, with cremation to follow. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Betty Witmer
Betty Jean (Willows) Witmer, 87, Kansas City, Mo., died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2009. Ms. Witmer was born Sept. 18, 1921, in Richmond, the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth (Patterson) Willows. She was married to Joseph C. Witmer on Nov. 24, 1943; he died in March 2000. Survivors include her daughter, Marcia K. Guillory; and her granddaughter, Melissa A. Guillory. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, at Mount Moriah Terrace Park Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16, at the chapel.
