Drama Camp kicks-off this week

The Good Samaritan Center's Summer Drama Camp began yesterday at the Good Samaritan Center, located at 108 S. Thompson Ave.
The two-week camp will be from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Monday-Friday until Friday, Aug. 1, where the participants will perform for friends and families.
Children in grades first through fifth are welcome to attend.
There is a $5 registration fee. To help with the cost, the center is offering scholarships for participants to attend the camp.

Club News
Sisterhoods celebrate Founders' Day
Members of P.E.O. Chapters CJ and KI met together on July 10, at the Barbee Memorial Presbyterian Church to celebrate Founders' Day.
Chapter KI hosted the event. Price Chopper catered the dinner. The evening began with a welcome from Beth Humphreys.
Following the meal, Humphreys impersonated Meredith Vieira of "Who Wants to Be A Millionaire". Becky Griffin and Pam Vogler were contestants who answered questions about P.E.O. and the founders.
Flo Ingle and Edith Jane Cox conducted a candlelight memorial service in honor of the seven teenagers who founded the P.E.O. at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant, Iowa , on January 21, 1869.
Members, led by Elaine Vassmer, sang "Blest Be the Tie That Binds," after which Becky Admire, President of KI, adjourned with thanks to all.
P.E.O. is a philanthropic and educational organization interested in bringing to women increased opportunities for higher education.
Garden Club gives landscaping donation
The Excelsior Springs Garden Club held their monthly meeting with 40 members and four guests present. President Dorothy Swatt thanked Marilyn Schmidt for her hospitality and garden tours at her home last month.
Four new members were inducted into the club.
Jan Marie Hornack, the guest speaker, discussed "Gardening the Natural Way."
After the program, donations were asked for phase II of the museum landscaping, which includes buying roses, mulch and a water faucet.
The organization agreed to donate $125 toward the landscaping.
Thanks were given to all who helped with the trash pick-up. Gardening work at the Excelsior sign was set for Thursday, July 17. After door prizes were given, the meeting was adjourned.
State DAC Assembly at Elms Resort & Spa
The Osage and Mary Ball Washington Chapters of the Daughters of American Colonists hosted the 85th annual Missouri State Assembly at the Elms Resort and Spa in Excelsior Springs.
The Mary Ball Washington Chapter is from the Blue Springs area. The theme was a tribute to President Harry Truman, which included an impersonator of the former President making an appearance.
The assembly opened with Color Guard Major General Robert Grover and James Scott of the Harry S. Truman Chapter - Sons of the American Revolution.
A special poem recognized the Insignia of the organization and was read by Honorary State Regent Dell Cunningham of the John Corbin Chapter.
Other than the hostess chapters, the John Corbin Chapter of Columbia area had the most members present.
Glenda Prewitt of Excelsior Springs closed the evening playing old tunes on the baby grand piano.
Members were invited to attend the 2009 Assembly in Kirksville, with the George Hull Chapter hosting, along with Mersey Lucas Wood Chapter of California and Slater Chapter.
Searching local history?
The Excelsior Springs Standard receives many requests for information from past issues. The news staff is not able to do research for individuals, however, the Excelsior Springs Historical Museum has an extensive collection of newspapers and newspaper clippings for local research. The Museum is located at 101 E. Broadway in the old Clay County State Bank building. For the cost of a $10.00 membership, persons can use the archives for their research needs.
