VA Clinic project nearing its finish

White Christmas for some, but headaches and backaches for others

McCleary Road is officially open
The very first motorists used the newly-redone McCleary Road shortly after 10:30 a.m., minutes after city crews took down the “road closed” signs and gathered up the barrels that had blocked access to this shortcut between some of the city’s newer housing developments and the quickly-growing U.S. 69 corridor.

Golf renovations get council’s OK
The last four push-up greens at the Excelsior Springs Golf Course should be renovated by the time the golf season starts up again, after the Excelsior Springs City Council approved $45,000 to redo them.
The price tag, while not cheap, is only a little more than half of what the city spent per green to redo six greens in 2001. And while that project took two and a half months, Golf Course Director Tim Jarman said the work done by XGD System LLC of Stuart, Fla., should take only a few days per green.

City gets $100,000 grant for historic preservation effort
Gov. Jay Nixon announced Thursday that the city of Excelsior Springs will receive a $100,000 grant through the federal Historic Preservation Fund.
The city will use the grant for rehabilitation of the west and north elevation terraces of the Hall of Waters. The building serves as City Hall for the Excelsior Springs local government and these open air terraces are the main entryways, providing public access on a daily basis.

Board takes step toward new funding
The Excelsior Springs Board of Education voted 6-1 Monday night to pass a resolution which could allow it to participate in a new federal programbut they’re not making any promises that they’ll participate when and if the program goes into effect.
Race to the Top, a $4 billion-plus program created under President Obama’s $787 billion economic stimulus plan, provides funding for education but also alters many basic aspects of public education.

Winter blast shocks Kansas City area
The Kansas City metropolitan area was rocked by its first real taste of winter this week, though the upper Midwest was hit even harder by the arctic blast.
Snow, ice and single-digit temperaturescompounded by a brisk wind that dropped the wind chill far below zeroslowed much of the city to a crawl. Just a short distance north of Kansas City, deep snows made conditions even worse.

Fed grant will fund cameras for downtown
A few years ago, during the height of the summer shopping season, some downtown merchants asked for security cameras to help deter crime and mischief in the downtown business district.
Now, thanks to a Justice Assistance Grant under the Federal Recovery Act of 2009, it appears as though they’ll get their wish.

Two in ES earn Keystones
Two Excelsior Springs projects will be among those recognized with a Keystone Award next weekone of them, for the second year in a row.
The new Walgreens store and the new Imaging Center at Excelsior Springs Hospital are among a dozen and a half projects picked for the award, which highlights businesses and institutions that contributed to economic development in Clay County during the past year.

Hospital receives staffing report
Excelsior Springs Hospital is properly staffed for purposes of service and safety, according to a study conducted by Brady & Associates.
Frank Brady presented the study’s findings during the regular meeting Monday of the hospital’s board of trustees.
