Nativity’s relocation is explained
For many motorists in Excelsior Springs this Christmas season, a big part of their commute is missing.
The Nativity Scene which is usually placed in a traffic island at St. Louis Avenue and Sycamore Streetor, as it’s commonly known, at “Job Corps Hill”has not been put there this year. And several people have expressed their displeasure through letters to the editor and telephone calls to the newspaper and members of the Community Christmas Committee.

McCleary Road should open soon
To the casual observer, McCleary Road looks like it is basically a finished product.
And, in fact, that perception is mostly true. Plus, city officials say the new street should be open soon.
Exactly how soon? Well, that question is a little more difficult to answer.

Christmas Lighting is Saturday night
The Christmas season will get off to a sparkling start in Excelsior Springs this Saturday.
While the day will get off to a festive beginning with the Progressive Taste of Christmas, happening at 12 different restaurants starting at 1 p.m. (see the Tuesday, Nov. 17, Standard for details), the rest of the day’s events will occur in the late afternoon and evening in downtown Excelsior Springs.

Christmas kick-off is Saturday
Those twinkling lights and jingling bells aren’t your imagination. The Christmas season in Excelsior Springs officially kicks off this Saturday, Nov. 21, and the Christmas Committee is frantically trying to get everything ready in time for the big day.
Rain kept volunteers away from their light-hanging duties Monday, but the committee promises that when the time comes Saturday evening, there will be plenty of sparkle at the Hall of Waters for the Mayor’s Christmas Lighting.

ES youngsters observe Veterans Day
Local students expressed their appreciation for men and women in uniform Wednesday as they observed Veterans Day at Excelsior Springs schools.
At 11 a.m. at Excelsior Springs Middle School, students in front of the building held their hands over their hearts while local veterans representing American Legion Post #236 hung a new U.S. Flag and Missouri state flag on the flagpole.

Three face murder charges in Thomas case
Updated November 10
Authorities on Friday afternoon charged three individuals with murder in connection with the kidnapping and death of a 23-year-old woman in Excelsior Springs last week.
James P. Reardon, 23, unknown address, was charged through Ray County with one count of first-degree murder and one count of armed criminal action.

Kidnap victim's body located

A body found in a field near Elmira is likely that of a woman kidnapped from a residential street in Excelsior Springs Wednesday night.
Witnesses said Carol A. Thomas was beaten and shoved into the trunk of a red Pontiac Grand Am, but police learned later that the vehicle was actually a red Grand Prix. The witnesses described the suspects as three white men.
