Bowens plan to spread ES water to world
If you're wondering when you might see Excelsior Springs water back on the shelves of supermarkets, it's just a matter of time now.
The Standard first reported Tuesday on a $275,000 Action Fund Loan from the state to the newly-formed Excelsior Springs Bottling Company.
Later that day, during a press conference at the bottling plant, located in the 500 block of S. Kansas City Ave., owners Keith and Jeri Bowen said that they hope to have water production underway by the end of the year.

Excelsior Springs Museum & Archives getting HELP
The Excelsior Springs Museum and Archives recently was chosen as one of 20 museums in Missouri tapped to participate in the Hands-On Experimental Learning Project (HELP). More than 90 museums submitted applications and hoped to receive the grant, which is valued at $7,500 per museum.
"I think it's just starting to sink in with the board members what we have here," stated Interim Curator Estella Morrison. "Receiving this grant can lead to more doors opening for us."

Council OKs purchase of Omni bus
iders of the Omni Bus transportation system in Excelsior Springs will soon have a better bus to ride. The Excelsior Springs City Council Monday night voted 5-0 to purchase a new 20-passenger bus. While it isn't quite as big as the 22-passenger bus frequently used now, it does have wheelchair accessibility -- a feature badly needed for a bus system that is designed to provide transportation for disabled and elderly passengers, along with others who are more able-bodied.

Museum hosting quilt show
The Excelsior Springs Museum & Archives is inviting the public to stop by for a new exhibit consisting of dozens of quilts.
Forty art quilts from one the oldest quilt guilds in the United States form the centerpiece of "Elements from the Front Range: Contemporary Quilters."
This national traveling exhibit comes to Excelsior Springs through Exhibits USA, the Missouri Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts. Most people are familiar with the basic quilting concept. But what, exactly, is an "art quilt"?

Master Plan progress is continuing
In their second monthly meeting, the steering committee for the proposed Excelsior Springs Master Plan identified some of the community's needs and formulated some goals that would address those needs.
Using the results gathered so far from an on-line survey being conducted by RDG, the firm hired by the city to help compose a Master Plan, the committee broke out into three small groups to come up with ideas to push Excelsior Springs forward.

ES school construction nears its end
The school construction projects started early this year are wrapping up, according to Deputy Superintendent of Schools John Lacy.
Lacy told the Excelsior Springs Board of Education Monday night that at Elkhorn Elementary, the last of the school construction projects, the work is "substantially complete." Ray County had yet to issue a certificate of occupancy for the new gymnasium, and school officials were working on a punch list to complete before funds would be released.

Water and sewer rates to increase
Local residents will see their water and sewer rates rise by four percent as of Jan. 1, 2009.
The Excelsior Springs City Council voted 5-0 Monday night to implement the rate hike, and aren't promising that there won't be other increases as the new sewage treatment plant comes on line and city officials start to see the costs associated with running it.

Council awards mineral water bid
Excelsior Springs is known for its water, and finally, bottles of water bearing the Excelsior Springs name will once again find their way onto shelves for retail sale.
Monday night, the Excelsior Springs City Council voted 5-0 to approve a contract for local residents Keith and Jeri Bowen to be able to bottle and sell the mineral waters that made Excelsior Springs famous.

Council okays equipment replacement
The Excelsior Springs City Council voted 5-0 Monday night to replace a tractor mower, a chipper and four walk-behind mowers that were destroyed in an arson fire in August.
The approvals came during a special meeting held, in part, to approve the budget for the coming fiscal year, which started Wednesday.
