Tax picture not "rosy," but "good"
Excelsior Springs isn’t in quite the dire financial straits that most of us read about in the major newspapers, but city officials are still keeping a close eye on revenues as the fiscal year begins to draw to a close.
Recently, Finance Director Steve Marriott provided the Excelsior Springs Area Chamber of Commerce with some figures and graphs related to sales tax revenues for the city. While the picture isn’t exactly “rosy,” Marriott said he would call it “good.”

Bridge on track for August finish
After months on the job, construction crews began this week to put some of the finishing touches on the Marietta Street bridge over the Fishing River. Much more must be done before the project is complete, but on Wednesday morning workers were pouring the concrete deck of the bridge.
Public Works Director Chad Birdsong said Boone Construction Co. was pouring the deck first because it will need time to cure. Sidewalks are already framed and will follow, but the intricate railing on the bridge could take a little time.

Master Plan draft gets a public review
About two dozen local residents and business owners turned out Wednesday afternoon for what is being called “the beginning of the end” of the process of formulating a Comprehensive Master Plan for the city of Excelsior Springs.
The draft of the plan still has room for improvement, and both city leaders and representatives of RDG Planning & Design the Omaha firm leading the master plan effort hope that the public will learn more about the plan in the next few months. Input and changes will be considered right up to the time the Excelsior Springs City Council accepts the final draft.

Latch Key a source of disagreement
Less than a year after the Excelsior Springs Board of Education asked the administrators of the Rockin’ Tiger Club to find a way to bring costs in line, the school district’s subsidy for the child care program has shrunk considerably.
But board member Susan T. Edwards suggested Monday night that the program, while well run and valuable, is not a good use of taxpayer money. Instead, she suggested retooling the program altogether.

Funds OK'd for Elm Road reconstruction
Several miles of residential streets have a new asphalt overlay thanks to the annual resurfacing program funded by the Transportation Trust Sales Tax. But Elm Road, located off Orrick Road on the southeastern edge of town, is still in pretty rough shape.
That should change soon, after the Excelsior Springs City Council voted 3-0 Monday night to fund a complete reconstruction of the street.

Neighbors call McCleary Road into question
People who live near McCleary Road are appreciative of the plan to redirect it and remove a hairpin turn just north of U.S. 69.
But their enthusiasm is dampened somewhat by problems with erosion, runoff and questions about whether City Councilman Sonny Parker should have a voice in the project.

VA Clinic to be constructed this year
The next addition to the Vintage Plaza commercial development on the southwest side of town will be a Veterans Administration Clinic, and VA officials hope to have the doors open by the end of this year.
The VA first started looking for a site to open a new clinic back in December 2008, and they told the Standard this week that the clinic would be built at the northeast edge of Vintage Plaza, along the east side of what will be the new path of McCleary Road.
