ESSD employees get their step increases reinstated
Monday nightjust two days before the June 30 cutoffthe Excelsior Springs Board of Education revised their fiscal year 2011.
The only change to the budget approved two weeks earlier on June 14 was that the step increases left out of salaries the first time around were put back in.

Bridge repairs will continue into autumn
Highway officials took emergency measures this week to close a local bridge that was slated for replacement this year anyway.
The westbound Missouri 10 bridge over northbound U.S. 69, near the Excelsior Village Apartments, was closed Wednesday after maintenance crews noticed a hole in the bridge deck that could not be temporarily fixed through the use of a steel plate.

Ralcorp to acquire AIPC in merger
American Italian Pasta Company is to be purchased by Ralcorp Holdings, Inc., in a merger agreement announced on Monday.
Ralcorp, a St. Louis food maker, will acquire all of the outstanding shares of AIPC common stock for $53 per share in cash, for a total purchase price of about $1.2 billion, net of cash acquired. The per share price is 27 percent higher than the pasta maker’s closing price of $41.73 on Friday.

P&Z approves district boundaries
After tabling the matter last month, the Excelsior Springs Planning & Zoning Commissionwith barely a quorum presentvoted 4-0 Tuesday night to approve the borders of the proposed Elms Historic District and Boarding House Historic District.
During May’s meeting, several audience members spoke against the establishment of one or both districts, which would require property owners to get permission before making alterations to the exteriors of their buildings.

ESSD budget OK’d without step increases
Just last week, the Excelsior Springs Board of Education was ready to approve a budget that contained step increases for the salaries of all eligible employees.
But things were different by Monday night, when the board voted 4-2 to approve a budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1 and no step increases are included.

Proposal includes new wastewater plant
According to Tom Wall, utilities services director, the city is going to be playing catch up with its water and sewer rates if the proposed increase passes next month.
“An increase has been long overdue,” Wall said. “Which is why the proposed increase seems so high.”

City’s rate increase discussion continues, second reading in July
The ordinance that would increase water and sewer rates for the 2011 fiscal year is one step closer to being officially voted on.
The first reading of the ordinance took place at Monday’s City Council meeting with Tom Wall, the city’s director of utilities, answering questions. The council agreed to have the second reading of the ordinance at their Monday, July 5 meeting.

Seating plant earns worldwide honors
The employees of Excelsior Springs Seating Systems have plenty of reason to be proud.
Last week, the plantwhich makes seats for Ford motor vehicleswas recognized with a Ford World Excellence Gold Award. The honor was marked with an afternoon of celebration at the factory, located on McCleary Road.

Police explore trends for red light cameras
The Excelsior Springs Police Department has released statistics detailing the first year of the city’s red light camera program. On Friday, Lt. Clint Reno of the Excelsior Springs Police Department noted that while citations had dropped steadily for the first 10 months of the year, this spring they’ve been nosing upward again.
