New trash set-up starts next month
Next month, Excelsior Springs residents can expect to see the future of trash collection in Excelsior Springs.
And starting the week of July 27, they’ll have to take part in that future. Virtually every aspect of the trash collection process will be changing. New wheeled trash carts will be picked up by an automated system on the trash trucks, and accordingly the crews that ride on the backs of the trash trucks will be no more.

Change orders put McCleary back on track
Work should restart soon at McCleary Road, now that the Excelsior Springs City Council has voted to approve three change orders that extend the scope of the project to redirect the roadway.
The change orders represent nearly $125,000 in added features and services for McCleary Road. Each of the change orders earned a 3-0 vote of a council that barely mustered a quorum for the meeting at noon Wednesday. Councilmen Jim Nelson and Ken Fousek were unable to attend.

Master plan process hits home stretch
By this time next month, residents of Excelsior Springs can see what the Master Plan Steering Committee has been up to for the past 10 months.
A community open house to give everyone a thorough look at Excelsior Springs’ new comprehensive master plan will be held July 16, tentatively at Excelsior Springs Hospital. The committee is likely to meet just before the community open house to finalize the document.

Keith Winge named new DEP director
The Downtown Excelsior Partnership has announced the appointment of Keith Winge as executive director of the organization.
Winge, 40, was born and grew up in Jefferson City, went to Northwest Missouri State University and received a bachelor of science degree in business management in 1992. He has been in the hospitality business since 1992 and worked in Omaha, Neb., Las Vegas, Marietta, Ohio, St. Simons Island, Ga., Atlanta and Washington, D.C. He moved to Kansas City six years ago and joined the Elms Resort as General Manager in February 2006. He was later named the Elms’ Director of Marketing. He has been actively involved in the Excelsior Springs Chamber, the Cultural Guild and DEP.

Council okays bonds for MRI project
The Excelsior Springs City Council voted 4-0 Monday night to authorize $2 million in Hospital and Nursing Home Revenue Bonds to fund a project already underway at Excelsior Springs Hospital.
Councilman Ken Fousek was absent.

School board OKs budget for 2010 year
The Excelsior Springs Board of Education voted 6-0 Monday night to approve a budget of more than $31 million for the 2010 fiscal year.

Relay for Life '09 draws hundreds
Excelsior Springs and Kearney combined forces on Friday night to spread hope into the lives of those who have survived and those who are battling cancer. For the first time Excelsior and Kearney held a joint Relay For Life, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society at the Kearney High School Stadium.
As Friday’s event was kicking-off, over $43,000 had been raised, said Event Co-Chair David Bosley.
A total of $62,680 was raised at the all-night event as of 6 a.m. Saturday. More than $8,000 came from the auction, which had 108 items up for bid, Bosley said.

DEP's plans earn council's approval
The Excelsior Springs City Council voted 4-0 Monday night to supplement a grant that will allow the Downtown Excelsior Springs Partnership to boost their role in the city’s rejuvenation through the hiring of an executive director, the re-opening of the water bar at the Hall of Waters as a visitors’ center for the city and increasing marketing for the community.

Curbside recycling starts in July
On a second reading Monday night, the Excelsior Springs City Council voted 4-0 to put in place a new trash ordinance and approve a new contract with Allied Waste that will substantially change the way garbage is collected in Excelsior Springs.
Councilman Ken Fousek was absent from the meeting.
The issue has been discussed for months, including during meetings of a special recycling steering committee and during a public forum to explain the proposal and gather input.
