Waterfest starts with ceremony
The flag is up and Waterfest is underway.
The forecast predicts a possibility of storms later today, but that's unlikely to keep kids away from the Radio Disney live remote or the children's games around the Hall of Waters.
Two other events, plus some live music, is scheduled for this evening. The Little Miss and Mr. Waterfest competition will start on the main stage in front of the Hall of Waters at 6 p.m., and at 6:30 there will be a special presentation honoring Police Chief John McGovern and School Resource Officer Paul White.

Relay gives cancer victims a voice
What they lacked in numbers they made up for in enthusiasm.
The Relay For Life kicked off in a mostly empty Tiger Stadium Friday evening, and though few attended, those who were there all appeared to be having a great time. However, the meager turnout is causing organizers to look for new ideas for the fundraiser before next summer.
Fewer than a dozen and a half cancer survivors started off the all-night event, down from about 60 last year and as many as a hundred or more just a few years ago.

Radio Disney comes to Waterfest
Families with young children will find one more thing to celebrate at this year's Waterfest event. Radio Disney AM 1190 will host an interactive radio remote featuring its Rockin' Road Crew on Friday, June 27th from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the courtyard at the Hall of Waters. The event will celebrate the release of the new Disney Channel original movie "Camp Rock," which stars teen sensations The Jonas Brothers. The movie premieres tonight on the Disney Channel and runs for four consecutive nights on three additional networks. The event, which is free and open to the public, will benefit the Excelsior Springs' High School Theater Department's upcoming trip to Scotland.
The theater department was selected amongst hundreds of applicants to represent the state of Missouri at the International Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland. To get there, students continue to fundraise and the Disney event is their latest endeavor. The group is searching for sponsors for the event, with packages in various amounts, some including advertising on Radio Disney.

Council sponsoring CDBG request
With no negative testimony, the Excelsior Springs City Council took just a few minutes Monday night to get behind a Community Development Block Grant request for a local small business.
Keith Bowen, who owns the Excelsior Springs Bottling Company with his wife, Jeri, is asking for a grant from the CDBG Action Fund to purchase new bottling equipment.

Big cats visit library
The Excelsior Springs branch of the Mid-Continent Library was packed late Wednesday morning with kids of all ages and their parents, all anxiously waiting to see and learn about the big cats visiting the library with the Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge. At 10 and 11 a.m., a short video was shown inside the library to inform the kids and their parents about Turpentine Creek and all the work they do there to help big cats like tigers, lions, leopards and cougars that people have unsuccessfully tried to domesticate.
After the video presentation, Tanya Smith, one of the founders and president of the Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge Creek Wildlife Refuge, answered some of the children's and parents' questions. Then everyone was led outside to see the two leopards, Zambo, a ten-year-old male black leopard, and Santania, an 11-year-old female, that were in special cages in a trailer in the parking lot. There were also t-shirts and souvenirs available for purchase to help fund the Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge, since they rely on donations like these to stay operational.

Water tower to receive new paint job
The water tower at U.S. 69 and Wornall Road will get a new paint job this summer, plus it will be filled with water again after being empty for several months.
Last year, the tower sprung some leaks. Rather than try to cobble something together -- especially since the tower near American Italian Pasta Company was able to continue to serve water customers on the northwest side of town -- city officials opted to leave it empty and seek advice on stripping off the old paint, inspecting the tower and fixing any problems and repainting it with the current city logo.

ES residents to get sales tax holiday
School may be barely out for the summer, but local shoppers can already look forward to extra savings when they start their back-to-school shopping in August.
The city of Excelsior Springs has traditionally "opted out" of a statewide sales tax holiday, since city operations rely so heavily on sales tax revenues, but Monday night the council voted 3-2 to repeal the 2004 ordinance that allowed the city to "opt out." That means that when the sales tax holiday comes around, Excelsior Springs will this year be "opting in," giving those who shop in Excelsior Springs the full benefit of the tax holiday.
