After one year, police look at red light camera results
A year after the first ticket was issued as a result of Excelsior Springs’ red light cameras, the Excelsior Springs Police Department believes the cameras are fulfilling their intended purposebut they’d like another year or so of statistics to gauge their true effect.
More than 5,000 citations were issued from May 2009, when the first tickets were mailed, through April 2010. However, the numbers over the year seemed to indicate a steady drop in traffic light violationsright up until the last few months, anyway.

Memorial Day service is Monday
The public is invited to help salute the members of the armed services, past and present, during a special Memorial Day service next Monday, May 31.
American Legion Post #236 will host the ceremony at the Clay-Ray Vets Memorial site, 200 Veterans Memorial Dr., at 10 a.m.

City considering increase in water and sewer rates
Excelsior Springs residents can expect to see their water and sewer rates rise for fiscal year 2011, but nothing is engraved in stone yet.
While Tom Wall, the city’s director of utilities, outlined the proposed increases at Monday night’s Excelsior Springs City Council meeting, the council won’t vote on a first reading of an ordinance until their June 7 meeting, and final approval won’t come until their June 21 meeting.

Summer school will go ahead as usual
Just two weeks from opening day, the Excelsior Springs School District is scrambling to get the details in place for summer school 2010.
Their job is a little easier, according to summer school elementary principal Christy Compton, because the school district has all along operated under the assumption that funding would be available for a full-fledged summer school.

Wind, water cause havoc in area
While Excelsior Springs avoided any tornadoes, a strong storm blew through the community Wednesday night, dumping inches of rain and toppling trees.
At least four and a half inches of rain fell in some parts of the community over a space of just a few days, and after the rain came down in sheets Wednesday night and strong straight-line winds ripped through town, many people faced some clean-up Thursday morning.

Summer school funds still up in the air
Parents looking for final word on Summer School this year will have to wait a little longer.
“I had hoped the state funding would have been finalized on Friday, but it was not,” Superintendent of Schools Jim Horton told the Excelsior Springs Board of Education Monday night. “Some schools have given up, and some are proceeding.”

Council shifts funds from greens to paths
A plan approved last fall to renovate five struggling greens at the Excelsior Springs Golf Course has now become a plan to begin a five-year program to repave the course’s cart paths.
Monday night, the Excelsior Springs City Council voted 4-0 to rescind an ordinance to allocate nearly $46,000 for the greens’ renovation, which won’t happen due to a dispute with XGD Systems, the contractor that was to be hired for the job.

Hearing clears the way for Enhanced Enterprise Zone
Yet again on Monday night, the Excelsior Springs City Council held a public hearing to gather input regarding the proposed Eastern Clay County Enhanced Enterprise Zoneand yet again, there were no adverse comments from the public.
