Painting crews back on the job
By mid-June, the army-green water tower at U.S. 69 and Wornall Road should be a thing of the past.
More than six months after starting the job last October, work crews returned last week to blast off the primer they used to protect the tower over the winter, then this week they were starting to place the intermediate of paint on the tower.

Crowd braves rain to honor fallen
It wasn’t quite standing room only, but a few hundred patriotic souls turned out in a spotty drizzle Monday morning for Excelsior Springs’ annual Memorial Day ceremony.
Father and son William “Sam” Ratcliffe and Maj. Robert Ratcliffe shared keynote speaker duties, talking about their experiences in the Army Special Forces during two very different eras.
The elder Ratcliffe, a Vietnam veteran, noted that the conflict in which he fought was the most unpopular war in U.S. history, but that it was the first to be memorialized—through the permanent Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C., and through the traveling Vietnam Wall, which is currently on display in nearby Norborne.

Members of the Excelsior Springs Area Chamber of Commerce saw a presentation about the city’s comprehensive master plan at their monthly luncheon Wednesday, and the talk created a little buzz among the membership.
Amy Haase of RDG Planning & Design led the Chamber members through an abbreviated version of the work that the Omaha-based firm has done with the Master Plan Steering Committee and other community members, showing the kinds of information collected so far and some of the results created using that information.

ES trash plan clears the first hurdle
Curbside recycling is one step closer to Excelsior Springs, as the Excelsior Springs City Council voted unanimously Monday night to approve the first reading of a new ordinance outlining trash collection using standardized 95- or 64-gallon lidded, wheeled containers and curbside recycling using standardized 18-gallon bins or other clearly labeled containers.
Also included in the plan, but not a part of the new ordinance, would be a drop-off site for yard waste to replace the twice-yearly pick-up now conducted by trash hauler Allied Waste.

Funding for fuel station endorsed
Excelsior Springs Memorial Airport may soon be able to start down the road to improvement. The Excelsior Springs Capital Improvements Authority on Monday recommended allocating up to $20,000 to install a credit card-operated fueling station at the airport.
Members of the Airport Board, assigned last year with determining whether the airport was worth saving -- and how to go about saving it -- believe that the fueling station will be the first step in a long process to make the airport an indispensable part of the aviation offerings in the Kansas City metropolitan area.

Residents sound off on trash plans
A variety of opinions were put on the table at the Public Works Department’s public forum at the Excelsior Springs Hospital last night, which discussed the proposed recycling plan.
The proposed plan includes adding curbside recycling, a yard waste drop off site and trash carts. If the plan passed, residents would receive a 95-gallon cart for trash and an 18-gallon container for mixed recycling consisting of paper, cardboard, tin, aluminum and plastic. Recycling pick-up would be every two weeks. This plan was presented at the open City Council meeting on Monday, May 4, due to a plethora of phone calls Public Works received on the general subject.

Future of Excelsior's trash discussed
Excelsior Springs is talking trash -- and the public is invited to join in.
With the city of Excelsior Springs' refuse contract with Allied Waste expiring this summer, city officials are looking at ways to improve trash service for the community, while still attempting to keep price increases to a minimum.
Several ideas are on the table, ranging from curbside recycling to a dedicated composting site for yard waste to automated trash pick-up for the entire community.

Council OKs purchase of storm sirens
The city's residents will be getting new storm warning sirens, after the Excelsior Springs City Council voted 4-0 Monday night to purchase new sirens this year and over the next two years.
Councilman Sonny Parker was absent from the meeting.
The move, which Mayor Pro Tem Ambrose Buckman called "much needed," endorses the Excelsior Springs Capital Improvements Authority's recommendation last month to spend up to $150,000 on new sirens.

Trouble in Paradise: Playhouse closes
The dinner theatre that many considered to be a crown jewel of downtown Excelsior Springs has closed.
Tim Wiese, the last full-time employee on the playhouse's payroll, left his key when he departed the building at the end of Wednesday, and Thursday a notice on the door and the playhouse's Web site confirmed what was already suspected -- that the dinner theatre was closing midway through its 10th season.
