WW II vets, fallen honored at ceremony
Hundreds of people braved the overcast, rainy weather Monday morning for the annual Memorial Day service at the Veterans Memorial in Excelsior Springs, hearing perhaps the last public address guest speaker Myles Perry would make before being relocated to Washington, D.C.
Perry, Platte County's assistant prosecutor and the Chief of Military Justice with the 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Stewart, Ga., spoke about the call to military service over the generations. World War II veterans, he noted, joined up in huge numbers after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. His own generation responded in similar fashion, he explained, to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
