McCleary Road relocation begins
It's been nearly a decade in the making, but the long-awaited straightening of McCleary Road began in earnest last week.
And, for once, it looks like it may not cost as much as city officials originally thought.
Public Works Director Chad Birdsong said city leaders first started talking about moving McCleary Road just north of U.S. 69 clear back in 2000. The roadway has always had a sharp turn coming north off the highway, and as commercial and residential construction developed in the area the sharp turn was becoming more problematic.

Gatsby Days kicks off in old style
If you see a decidedly antiquated slant to fashion and cars in Excelsior Springs this weekend, rest assured -- it's not your imagination.
By the time most Standard readers open up today's issue, Gatsby Days in Excelsior Springs will be well underway.
The annual event celebrating the heyday of Excelsior Springs history, the first few decades of the 20th century, kicked off Sunday with the Gatsby Style Show (a photo from that event was featured on page 5 of Tuesday's Standard), and continued Wednesday night with Vaudeville at Ventana, a dinner theatre performance at Ventana Gourmet Grill.

City to get second new Omni bus

Just a few months after buying a new bus for the Omni Bus system, the Excelsior Springs City Council is receiving yet another new bus.
The council voted 5-0 Monday night to accept a Nonurbanized Area Public Transportation Capital Assistance Grant of $72,901. The funds, received through the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission from the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, will not require any matching funds from the city.
Devery Hunt, administrative assistant at the Excelsior Springs Public Works Department, said the funds would be used to buy a 20-passenger bus with wheelchair lift, virtually identical to the new bus unveiled earlier this year.

School board approves roof repairs
The roof at Excelsior Springs Middle School is more than a decade old, and was only warranted for 10 years.
But the Excelsior Springs Board of Education, in one of its last actions before the departure of outgoing board member Darren Marriott and the addition of new board member Tray Harkins, isn't waiting for the roof to fail.
The board voted 7-0 to spend more than $500,000 to repair the roof while it's still functional.

Schutte, Nelson retain seats on council
The Excelsior Springs City Council will remain as it is for the next three years, after voters Tuesday re-elected the two incumbents.
Challenger Chad Taylor, while he didn't come out on top, didn't have a poor turnout for the election.
Mayor Carolyn Schutte, seeking her third term in office, garnered the most votes at 411. Four hundred of those votes came from the portion of Excelsior Springs that lies within Clay County; the remaining 11 were from the Golf Hill neighborhood, the only residential area of the community that's within Ray County.

City Council votes 5-0 to switch banks

Within about a month, the city of Excelsior Springs will pull its depository accounts from Bank of America, where they have been for several years, and move them to National Bank of Kansas City.
The Excelsior Springs City Council voted 5-0 Monday night to make the switch after Director of Administrative Services Steve Marriott and Dennis Hartman, chief financial officer at Excelsior Springs Hospital, determined that the city could realize more than $1,400 in savings monthly, and the hospital could see monthly savings of more than $528.

Council races dominate April 7 ballot

Two incumbents on the Excelsior Springs City Council are facing a challenge next Tuesday from someone who's very nearly an incumbent.
Carolyn Schutte is seeking her second term on the council in next Tuesday's election, while Jim Nelson is looking for what's technically a fourth term -- with a one-year hiatus between terms two and three.
