Gatsby Days: Party like it's 1929
More than a dozen famous performers visited the Elms Resort & Spa Saturday night -- in spirit, at least.
The Excelsior Springs Area Cultural Guild and Excelsior Springs Community Theatre presented "A Salute to Vaudeville," which brought together some of the most famous musical and comedy acts of the vaudeville era in one star-studded line-up.

Post hosts commander
In a rare visit, the American Legion1s National Commander, Marty Conatser, was honored at an event sponsored by Clyde Gustine American Legion Post 236. More than 80 veterans, family members, dignitaries, and community members attended the event.
Conatser's message was strong and educational, even to those members who are very active with the various programs at the Post. It is the responsibility of the American Legion Family, which also consists of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Sons of the American Legion ("SAL"), to demonstrate the value of membership in The American Legion.

Crash on 210 kills 1, injures 3
A two-vehicle accident on Missouri 210 Friday afternoon left one teenager dead, two of his friends badly hurt and a fourth person also seriously injured.
Benjamin J. Gray, 17, Missouri City, was a passenger in a 1994 Ford driven by Andrew J. Asmus, 17, Excelsior Springs.

Chamber honors award winners
Before a packed house Thursday night, some of Excelsior Springs' best and brightest were honored by the Excelsior Springs Area Chamber of Commerce. Five individuals and a dedicated committee were presented with the Chamber's annual awards. Each was joined by family and friends, as well as by the Chamber membership and residents of the community at large for the Chamber's 81st Annual Dinner and Auction at the Elms Resort & Spa.
Outgoing Chamber President Kevin Morgan, before passing the gavel to incoming President Jerome Schieder, remarked on the positive outlook of everyone present, despite bad news about the economy, the war in Iraq and soaring gas prices.

School board hears review of projects
Representatives of Williams Spurgeon Kuhl & Freshnock, the Kansas City architectural firm that is overseeing construction at virtually every building in the Excelsior Springs School District, told the Excelsior Springs Board of Education Monday night that some of the timelines for the various school projects have shifted but the August completion date should hold firm.
In the meantime, some of the most dramatic work is likely to take place between now and the beginning of the summer.

Parker keeps seat; Buckman joins council
Excelsior Springs City Councilman Sonny Parker was narrowly elected to a fourth term Tuesday, edging out challenger Wayne Souders by a handful of votes, while first-time candidate Ambrose Buckman soared past both of them in the vote count.
Unofficial election results showed Buckman, a retired Ford Motor Company manager, leading the slate of five candidates with a total of 461 votes. Parker, a real estate developer, received 314 votes, while retired police officer Souders was a heartbeat behind at 305 votes.

Downtown fire destroys 2 businesses
The landscape of downtown Excelsior Springs changed this week, as two businesses were destroyed by a fire overnight Wednesday and a third business was damaged.
Sheltons Floor & Wall Covering and Ks Surplus were both gutted by the blaze, and firefighters spent nearly 18 hours at the scene fighting the fire and monitoring the smoldering heap of rubble that remained.

Annexation, image are prime topics
All five candidates for two seats on the Excelsior Springs City Council expressed opinions about growth in the community and the perceptions of both locals and visitors, though their views varied somewhat from individual to individual.
Their statements came during a Candidates Forum held last Thursday evening at Excelsior Springs High School.
