Way-finding signs go up
When consultants advised city leaders recently on ways to improve Excelsior Springs, one of their most pointed suggestions was to make it easier for visitors to find their way around the community.
That idea has been taking shape in recent weeks, as Acme Sign Company has been putting up way-finding signs throughout the city.

School board discusses personnel cuts
In an early round of budget cuts Wednesday, the Excelsior Springs Board of Education announced that they would cut approximately 30 positions from school staff rosters for 2010-2011, though only nine individuals are likely to be laid off.

Hospital considers adding autism center
Excelsior Springs Hospital could open an autism center later this year, offering area families an opportunity to learn about dealing with daily struggles with children suffering from the disorder.
But first, the entire Excelsior Springs Hospital Board of Trustees must consider the decision, which hospital CEO Sally Nance says shouldn’t be made lightly.

First draft of preservation plan presented
The first draft of the Excelsior Springs’ Historic Preservation and Revitalization plan is finished and Winter and Company presented critiques, suggestions and clarifications to the community at the Historic Preservation Commission’s community workshop Wednesday night.

Energy drinks: Looks can be deceiving
Parents typically have plenty to worry about when it comes their children.

Horton updates board on issues
With serious budget issues directly ahead, Superintendent of Schools Jim Horton gave the Excelsior Springs Board of Education an update Monday night on some issues, both local and statewide, that are worth the board’s consideration.
He pointed out a handful of bills that have been proposed by state legislators, though he noted that with the Missouri House and Senate currently on a break, they aren’t currently moving ahead on these issues or any others.

Board buckles down for tough budget
In 21 years, Superintendent of Schools Jim Horton says, he has never seen a funding crisis of this depthor this length.
So far, thanks to balances stored up when times were better, the Excelsior Springs School District has been able to avoid cuts. But as Deputy Superintendent John Lacy says, “You can’t spend more than you take in for very long.”

DEP is ‘going to the wells’ for funds
The Downtown Excelsior Partnership knows that much of the history that built this community is tied to the many mineral waters that flowed for decades. They suspect that the waters will play a part in Excelsior Springs’ future, as well.

Family raising funds to adopt another ‘special needs’ child
To some, Mark and Dana Emmons might seem to have their hands full with two 4-year-olds and a 13-year-old.
