Downtown will be focus of meeting
In February, dozens of people attended one of several community workshops on the Excelsior Springs Comprehensive Master Plan.
The same format will hold true in April, as RDG Planning & Design plans two open house workshops and a third session to publicly present the findings from the workshops. This time, the focus of the workshops will be on the downtown area.

City still has some salt, sand
It was a cold winter, but city officials didn't get nearly as much snow as they'd anticipated.
As a result, Excelsior Springs will be well-prepared for winter 2009-2010.
"We still have about three-fourths of the salt and sand we bought for this winter," Public Works Director Chad Birdsong said. "Usually at this time we don't have nearly this much left."

Cameras to snap away by April Fool's Day
Some commuters may have been slowed down this week by a variety of trucks and equipment along U.S. 69 near the southwest corner of town, but they haven't seen anything yet.
Starting no later than April 1, the slow-down is intended as a permanent feature of that stretch of highway, as red light cameras get up and running. The controversial cameras are the first for Excelsior Springs, though St. Louis is already using them and Kansas City has installed several cameras recently.

The west side of town may have a park to call its own as early as this summer.
The Excelsior Springs City Council voted 4-0 Monday night to use a little less than $89,000 in capital improvements funding to construct a parking lot, rain garden/bioswale and other features at a new park along the south side of Wornall Road between Crown Hill Cemetery and U.S. 69.

Snow day may not be made up this year
Students in the Excelsior Springs School District have only missed one day this school year due to the weather -- and they may not have to make it up. Elkhorn Elementary is the one exception. Students at that school missed two days after their climate control system froze up, and that puts them past the tipping point with regard to make-up days.
Superintendent of Schools Jim Horton told the Excelsior Springs Board of Education Monday night that the district has 175 days built into its calendar, and only 174 days are required by law. With only one day missed for snow, Horton said, the choices are to extend the calendar one day into the final week of May or not make the day up at all.

The final phase of the expansion at the Excelsior Springs Hospital is now in its last stages.
The new and larger emergency room is scheduled to open April 1, putting in place the last piece of the 28,000-square-foot, $9 million expansion.
The hospital's new wing opened at the end of December, but the emergency room portion of the project was still well underway at that time.
