Candidates talk about Excelsior's future
About three dozen voters turned out Thursday night to hear the views and visions of the five men running for two seats on the Excelsior Springs City Council.
Using a format different from that used in recent years, Thursday’s Candidates’ Forum invited audience members to ask their questions directly instead of writing them on note cards. The change allowed more interaction between voters and candidates while maintaining the civility of past forums.

Chamber gets DREAM update at luncheon
Approximately 18 months into the three-year duration of the DREAM Initiative, a speaker from the architectural firm of Peckham, Guyton, Albers & Viets gave Excelsior Springs business leaders an update last week on how the process is going.
Brian Pratt, a consultant with the St. Louis-based firm, complimented the city on what has been accomplished so far, and explained not just the purpose behind the Downtown Revitalization and Economic Assistance for Missouri program, but also where Excelsior Springs could be headed over the remainder of the DREAM period.

Police seek 'most wanted' after car chase
The Excelsior Springs Police Department has named Terry E. Campbell as its “most wanted” this week, after Campbell led them on a pursuit that resulted in a patrol car colliding with another vehicle on Tuesday afternoon.
No one was injured in the minor accident, which occrred at 3:05 p.m. Wednesday at N. Myrtle and Dunbar avenues.

Council Oks funds for ESFD work, bridge
The Excelsior Springs City Council made quick work Monday night of endorsing two recommendations from the Excelsior Springs Capital Improvements Authority and approving a new company to provide city employees’ health insurance.
The insurance issue required attention by the council, as the current policy was in the final year of its three-year term. Director of Administrative Services Steve Marriott said the Griffey Insurance Agency had worked closely with the city to come up with options for the new policy.

Construction at schools speeds up with warmth
Now that the weather is finally warming up, work crews at schools in the Excelsior Springs School District hope to make up some of the time they lost during the cold winter months.
The Excelsior Springs Board of Education got an update on the work Monday night from Rick Kuhl, one of the principals of the engineering firm Williams Spurgeon Kuhl & Freshnock, and other representatives of the firm.

Funds OK'd for park
This year, Excelsior Springs may get something it hasn’t gotten in decades — and something the west side of town has never gotten.
The Excelsior Springs Capital Improvements Authority Monday afternoon agreed to allocate $225,000 to begin the process of establishing a brand-new city park on the southwest corner of the intersection of Wornall Road and Tiger Drive, on the land commonly known as the Powell Lake property.

More than 100 join 'Jump for Heart' event
An audible “Yessss!” was heard all over the gymnasium at Westview Middle School Monday afternoon as jump ropes were distributed to kick off the school’s 24th annual “Jump for Heart” fundraiser for the American Heart Association.
More than 100 Westview students took part in the event. They have until next Monday, March 10th, to turn in their donations, but as of Monday more than $5,000 had been raised to help in the fight against heart disease.

City preps for Trans Trust tax election
Only a month remains before Excelsior Springs officials will ask voters to extend the half-cent Transportation Trust Sales Tax—this time for good. Monday night, Public Works Director Chad Birdsong outlined the tax’s many successes over its 27-year history, and also discussed future plans for the revenues raised.
The tax, which funds asphalt overlays and other maintenance to residential streets around Excelsior Springs, was first approved by voters on June 15, 1981. Every two years since then, voters have extended the tax, usually by a vote of 70 percent or more.
