Theater, hotel still in works
The group planning to build a movie theater in Excelsior Springs has told the Standard that they now have their letter of commitment to finance the project, and local residents can expect to see progress on the project by about mid-April.

Security cameras in place
Several months after being approvedand several years after they were first proposedsecurity cameras are now running 24 hours a day, seven days a week in the downtown area.
At this time, there are three cameras in place. Two are on Broadway, one at Main Street and one near the municipal parking lot off Elizabeth Street, and the third is near the post office on St. Louis Avenue near Concourse Avenue.

Community helps local return to Haiti
Rita Robertson knew she would not be able to help people in Haiti for the past four years if it weren’t for community support.
These past few weeks proved that true even more so with the creation of rag quilts for children and infants by community members for Robertson and her daughter Daina Kennedy to take to Haiti.

DEP pushes for more business
Despite a resurgence in commercial activity, downtown Excelsior Springs still has its share of empty storefronts.
But the Downtown Excelsior Partnership has a new plan to enliven the downtown business districtand boost the potential for new business at the same time.

Auxiliary contributes $10,500 to hospital
The Excelsior Springs Hospital Auxiliary recently approved a contribution of $10,500 to Excelsior Springs Hospital.
The donation will make possible the purchase of several needed items, including a rolling steam table for the community room, new furniture for the surgery waiting area, three new flat-screen televisions and a sound system for the community room.

Trash routes getting a revamp
You may be used to putting your trash and recycling on the curb on Monday morning, for examplebut next week your trash day may change to, say, Wednesday.
Starting Monday, Feb. 15, the Allied Waste trucks will be making their rounds through Excelsior Springs on an entirely new schedule.

Schools do their part for Haiti
Thousands of miles apart, Excelsior Springs’ elementary schools are doing what they can for those less fortunate in Haiti.
In just the past week, an abundant amount of toothbrushes, hand towels, soaps and other items have been collected at two of Excelsior Springs’ elementary schools.

City signs contract for report
In 2008, city officials were fairly certain they had a wastewater treatment plant that was able to handle Excelsior Springs’ needs.
The pilot project they put into place, however, didn’t work. On Monday night, Director of Utility Services Tom Wall said the Missouri Department of Natural Resources had issued letters of warning because the plant had violated the ammonia discharge limit.
