City purchases empty 12-plex buildings
In a special session Thursday morning, the Excelsior Springs City Council voted 5-0 to purchase two vacant 12-plexes in the downtown area.
City Manager David Haugland said both buildings will likely be sold to the Downtown Excelsior Partnership, and that the city is cooperating with DEP to find good uses for both structures.

Clay County settlement ready to go
The Excelsior Springs Road & Bridge District is soon expected to receive the
first installment of a settlement of more than $400,000 from Clay County.
The county is ready to approve settlements with the Excelsior Springs district and with Pleasant Valley, just weeks after approving similar settlements with Kearney and Liberty. The settlements are the end result of a legal dispute between the county and several municipalities and special road districts, and the remaining recipients of the settlement, which totals approximately $6.1 million, is expected to occur within the next few months.

Potential community center side ID'd
A potential site for a new community center has been identified, and though it has yet to receive official approval from city leaders, it was a major point of discussion during Master Plan workshops this week.
Wednesday, as representatives of RDG Inc., a planning and design firm based in Omaha, Neb., wrapped up a series of workshops they pointed to an undeveloped commercial site bounded on the west and east by U.S. 69 and N. Jesse James roads, respectively, and on the north by Wornall Road.

During a short meeting Monday night, the Excelsior Springs Board of Education received an update from Superintendent of Schools Jim Horton about legislation they should watch this year, and got a demonstration from "Ginger," the robotics teams' entry into competition this year.
The robotics demonstration came early in the meeting, as robotics assistant coach Mark Schafer explained the robot's design and capabilities. The robotics team members themselves, nearby, controlled the robot remotely during the demonstration.

DEP updates activities for city council
The Downtown Excelsior Partnership has become a force to be reckoned with over the few years it's been in existence, and acting DEP President Keith Winge told the Excelsior Springs City Council that much more is planned in the near future for the organization.
Formed in July 2006, the DEP is dedicated to promoting a vibrant, thriving downtown area. Modeled after other main street organizations throughout the nation, Winge said that DEP members have made much progress but have even bigger plans for the future.
With three active committees -- the design committee, the special events committee and the marketing committee -- the DEP has started new initiatives and developed existing ones.

Airport board makes pitch to city council
Only six months into their tenure, the Excelsior Springs Airport Board Monday night gave the Excelsior Springs City Council an update on their work so far, and asked for the city's support as they move into the future.
For years, the airport hobbled along on the devotion of a select few volunteers, individuals who cut corners, raised funds and stretched dollars to keep the airport afloat.
By the time the airport's last operator left, at the end of a contract that expired on the last day of 2007, there was no appointed airport board and it had been years since there had been any meaningful support from the city. In fact, a past city manager expressed an interest in shutting down the facility and finding a better use for the land and its buildings.
