Thaw brings its own trouble
A major thaw mid-week has helped to knock down a little bit of the snow that’s collected on the ground over the past month or so, but the warmer temperatures have brought their own set of troubles.

Transition House is re-opening
In the early 1990s, the Earl McElwee family donated an old brick apartment building on Saratoga Avenue to the Good Samaritan Center, which at the time was located on Broadway, just north of the building. Over the next four years, a group of dedicated and passionate people rehabilitated the structure and turned it into an apartment building with three units, one on each floor. This building became the Good Samaritan Center’s Transition House, and through last year more than 30 families had been housed there temporarily as they rebuilt their lives.

While some people—such as the kids building snowmen, sledding and playing in general—have found ways to enjoy the weather this winter, it’s been causing problems for others.
Frigid temperatures combined with snowfall after snowfall have kept homeowners and business people shoveling away the white stuff, furnace repairmen have had long lists of jobs to do and city crews have been trying to keep up with street plowing. But there have been other issues, as well—like trash pick-up.
