ES getting ready for red light cameras
Kansas City's first red light cameras started taking photos earlier this month, and Excelsior Springs will be following not long after.
City staff members are meeting today with American Traffic Solutions to begin working on putting cameras at two busy intersections along U.S. 69 -- at Patsy Lane/Vintage Drive and at McCleary Road.
They'll know more after today's meeting exactly when the cameras will start snapping away, but after months of crossing T's and dotting I's, city officials are ready to make their move.

Agencies work to coordinate efforts
The people of Excelsior Springs, like others around the nation, could be facing tough times ahead.
With layoffs happening left and right and grim economic forecasts at every turn, local residents may need a little help to make it through the lean times.
Last week, representatives of more than a dozen different bodies, agencies and organizations met in a community roundtable to discuss how best to coordinate assistance.

Committee asks for use of old firehouse
For several years, the former downtown fire station has sat empty, exposed to the elements and unused.
For some time, leaks in the back wall led to mold problems inside the building. After Public Works crews gutted the structure, it was used for minor storage for some time.

Master Plan group shares progress info
About two dozen local residents, officials and business people learned last week about the basic facts and the guiding principles behind the comprehensive master plan for the city of Excelsior Springs.
Information compiled through the Master Plan Steering Committee, which has been meeting for the past several months, as well as feedback generated through an on-line survey, has been used by Omaha firm RDG to build a basic framework for the plan.

Vote boosts fund to tear down blight
During the past year, a special blighted properties fund has allowed the city of Excelsior Springs to purchase and demolish more than half a dozen houses and buy some under-utilized land -- all in the interests of improving the looks and usability of the community.
Monday afternoon, the Excelsior Springs Capital Improvements Authority voted 4-1 to not just extend the fund into 2009, but to increase its size by 160 percent.

Board OKs shift in classes, requirements
With changes approved by the Excelsior Springs Board of Education Monday night, Excelsior Springs High School students will see some altered course offerings and a shift in graduation requirements over the next few years. While graduation requirements on their surface remain the same -- a total of 25 credits, including four in communication arts, three in mathematics, three and a half in science, three in social studies, one each in fine arts and practical arts, two in physical education, half a credit in personal finance and seven elective credits -- it's in the details that the changes will be occurring.

Group gets preview of presentation
Public can see progress on Master Plan at meeting Thursday, Jan. 15
If you've been wanting a first-hand look at how the city's expenditures for a new comprehensive plan are being used, you can get just that next week.
The public is invited to view a presentation about the Master Plan Steering Committee's work on the project so far. The presentation will take place from 6-7 p.m. next Thursday, Jan. 15, in the Regent Ballroom at the Elms Resort & Spa, 401 Regent Ave.

Tower paint job won't be done 'til spring
The water tower at U.S. 69 and Wornall Road was supposed to have a fresh coat of paint and the city's new logo before winter weather hit, but City Manager David Haugland says it appears the job won't be finished until spring.
The job was begun back in October, but it was temporarily shut down due to concerns over the paint dust in the air and its effects on nearby Westview School.

ES firefighters have busy night
The Excelsior Springs Fire Department was kept busy overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday, battling three different fires at various locations around town.
The worst blaze was the first of the evening. According to Deputy Fire Chief Paul Tribble, a call about a house on fire at 906 Ellsworth St., near Siloam Mountain Park, came in shortly before midnight.
